Until Mitch Robinson and RJ Barrett. Charlie Ward from the 1994 draft was the last Knick to be drafted and retained for a 2nd contract. That's 20+ yrs, don't believe any other franchise in professional sports holds similar history.

That's a bit different than saying they can't identify talent. Guys like Ariza, Nate, Lee and Chandler were all value picks. I can think of teams like the Kings who have similar, or worse, draft luck. Now the part about not signing a pick to 2nd contract. Is a management issue and there is denying that this team was one the most mismanaged pro franchises in recent history.

Who would have thought David Lee would so vastly outperform Amare?

From what I remember Knicks signed Lee to a one year contract after his 3rd year at a higher dollar amount but I'm not sure.

Yeah, agree. Knick fans like to dwell on guys picked ahead - we like to talk about how easy it would have been to trade up, NFL style.

I think the KP draft was particularly confusing for Knick fans.
We wanted KAT. We wanted Russell. We wanted Okafor. We wanted Winslow. KAT is great but people have soured on his lack of effort on D. Russell has been attainable a number of times and is seen as a low effort on D, selfish on O player. Both are always injured. Okafor has been a bust, same for Winslow.
KP too is always injured. But we speak positively now because of the KP trade tree that in part helped us land both Randle and Brunson years later.

The other funny part of being a Knicks fan is the lure of the 2nd round center “steal”. We’ve had a number of those. Mitch was authentic. Perhaps the best value pick in the history of the franchise.

There was Willie, the spiritual Gasol heir. He delivered for team Spain, but the game has changed enough that he can’t get floor time in the NBA.

Then there was the whole Randolph Morris thing. Went undrafted after leaving Kentucky too early, returned to KY and had a good season. then signed a free agent deal with the Knicks. He was supposed to be like a first rounder… but wasn’t.
