Giannis is definitely better but there isn't a huge gap. Randle was second team all NBA, Giannis first. There is a gap but not a huge one. Randle is really good!

There is definitely a huge gap hahaha Giannis ended with a PER of 28 compared to Randle's 19. That's basically the difference between a star and a superstar and future HOFer. To put into perspective, Randle's best season would be considered the worst season Giannis had in the past five years.

Of course! Giannis is maybe the number 3 best player since 1980, after Jordan and LBJ. I don't think the Knicks can rely on a plan to get him here. That being said, Randle is as close as the next 5 guys at mimicing that kind of overall production, right?

Some lucky shoes for the Knicks to be wearing so let's not waste the opportunity to compete.

I know, right? We need to do our best to take advantage. Finally. Also, if I understood correctly the biggest max that Randle can get is more cap friendly because it's a lower amount than the Giannises supermax contract

Yes, Randle can't get a supermax, but a "regular" max is a considerable amount too if we're talking about the one he would sign as a free agent in the summer of 2022. For the team, by far the best option is for Randle to sign this offseason since that contract would be below $ 30M per season. It’s a definitely team friendly.

Maybe I wasn’t clear enough, Randle deserves a contract to get I just say that from a team perspective (salary cap perspective) it’s better to sign this summer

I think his cap hold is roughly 6 million below what a max extension would be. Him signing an extension now would be for considerably less than he could get signing a new one next season. Not sure what Nerlen Noels has to say about that. Also, I'm not sure if his current contract has a trade kicker, but a 15% kicker would get him right near his max.

Even more goes into it though because an extension would be for a set amount whereas a max FA contract would be for a percentage of the salary cap. With a mutual opt out in the CBA next summer and then another year to negotiate, we might see a change in the revenue split, making for a larger cap and higher salaries for the max guys. Again, I'm not sure about what Nerlen Noels has to say.

Randle signing against his Early Bird rights for the max possible under current conditions is guaranteed money in the bank for him. If he suffers massive regression or massive injury, that full max next season is no guarantee.

This is where agent politics comes into play. CAA will want Randle to sign an extension right now. Their numbers crunchers will see likely regression. Combined with a bad playoff series, that doesn't bode well for trying to get a full market max contract. However if they keep broaching that, they risk Randle leaving them for another agency. In which case, in the rare instance that Randle upticks ( not likely), CAA spent all that money and blood to foster a relationship with a client and some other agency gets to poach him away.

In practical terms, unlike a rare situation like LBJ leaning CAA to start his own agency, no one leaves CAA. But other agencies trying to poach your guy only upticks what it costs to maintain that client. It's a lot of money to keep bull**** modern professional athletes happy. There's a reason Bob Myers, Pelinka and Rose all made the leap away from being an agent. It's a gloried janitors position, you have to clean up a players **** most of the time. Leon Rose and CAA had to spend a **** ton of money and leverage to keep Melo happy post Linsanity. Lin was on the cover of Time. You think that didn't stick in Melo's "I want to be a brand" tiny little craw?

Take the money and run. Randle should take the money and run. No functional NBA analytics department will see this seasons uptick at sustainable. Could it be? Yes. Is it likely? No.

A good example of that would be his teammate Nerlen Noels who famously turned down a 4 year 72 million extension in the hopes of a bigger deal. In the 4 years since he has made 17 million.

Hopefully the Knicks can convince Randle that signing an extension now will give the Knicks the space to bring another All Star here. I'm just not sure if coming off an all NBA second team season his ego could handle getting less than the max.

His ceiling is extremely high and for example he just became the 1st NBA player to ever average over 20 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists and +.400% from 3 since dating back to Larry Bird's MVP season.

@ only 26 he just averaged 24.1 points, 10.2 rebounds, 6.0 assists and .411% from 3PT.

Not only was he the NBA's Most Improved Player but his stats were damn near identical to Nikola Jokić who (@ 26 years old same age as Julius Randle) just became an NBA M.V.P.

Yes. He had a poor postseason performance during his 1st ever playoffs appearance while without Mitchell Robinson and tried way too hard in order to carry NY on his back but his future as an NBA All-Star has never been brighter.

I can not WAIT to see Julius Randle come year #2 under coach Thibs.

He's going to contend for the NBA's MVP this upcoming season and with an attacking PG in KEMBA WALKER, Julius Randle is going to feast.

Right? The upgrade of having Kemba spotting up at the 3 point line vs. Elfrid should be significant. I'm also confident Noel will have better hands and hope Robinson can play more. Maybe that frees up Randle for more shots right at the rim.

I doubt it. Offensivly his numbers are going to drop. Not saying he won't play well but Kemba and Fournier are going to take shots. RJ will suffer the most.

Usually the MVP is the best player on one of the best teams. If Knicks are a top 4 sees again, he will get votes.
