At 7-8, we're doing okay. We'll improve from within, banking on our player dev personnel to get more out of our young players. Heck, we're finally getting close to full strength. Burks will get us another starter quality player in the mix. Does this make us a top 4 playoff team in the east with Thibs?
I think Thibs wants us to make a big trade that gets us the foundational pieces to be competitive for the next 3-5 years. We have a lot of assets - good young players + a boatload of draft picks + cap space, so if we see that superstar gamechanger, we have the tools to get it done.
Based on how Randle is playing, he's literally one of the top big men in the NBA, worth of consideration for an All-NBA team spot. You don't get much better than that. The Knicks should be looking to upgrade literally everything else.
Hypothetically speaking, we can accelerate team progress to contention by upgrading our SG spot with a Brad Beal (35ppg!) or CJ McCollum (27ppg!) type SG - These guys are basically prototypical SG offensively. If you pair either of these guys with Randle, you'd have the foundation of a championship contending offense. (downside on both is that they're slightly undersized, but on the plus side they overindex on PG skills)
So do you hope RJ's 3's start falling at a 35% clip a few years from now, or do you think you can trade assets to get that guy now?
