The Knicks hired Some of the Jazz former staff so they have a good relationship by default
The Knicks were discussing trading for CP3 to mentor the PG they draft. Conley can do that too and he fits Thibs style
The Knicks would likely swap picks with the Jazz so they go from #27 to #23
Conley might play well enough to get a 2-3 year contract with the Knicks meaning whoever they draft can be mentored longer
The Knicks could probably add DSJ to the trade
Even if it doesn’t work, Conley is a massive expiring so they kick the can one more year
For the Jazz
They save money. Even if the Knicks add DSJ they save $10 mil in salary cap
Randle coming off the bench as a 6th man scorer works. That was his role in NO and he did it well
Randle and DSJ are expirings so they take a chance and if it doesn’t work they can move on
Pick #27 should still get them something decent. Also Perrin knows their draft board. He never sounded enthused by this draft so a trade back shouldn’t be a deal breaker.
The Conley trade idea makes more sense than a CP3 trade for all those reasons and a few more.
First let's stop pretending that Thibs is starting a pre-school program for players. Conley will come in to win. Ntilikina and Harper will see his face in their grill if they need mentoring. And Conley won't be doing nice guy State Farm commercials featured freaky stalker characters. Conley, by any metric, is closer to Thibs' school of thought than CP3.
I also like the potential trade exchange better. Ship out Randle, DSJ, and Knox...
