What would you think about a trade based around Fultz and DSJ?

Yeah right and if it’s somehow true I’d do it in a heartbeat

Report: Magic have shown trade interest in Knicks’ Dennis Smith Jr.

by Ashish Mathur
October 12, 2020

Magic, Knicks, Dennis Smith Jr.

The Orlando Magic have reportedly shown trade interest in New York Knicks point guard Dennis Smith Jr., per Marc Berman of the New York Post.

Magic veteran guard D.J. Augustin becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason. With former No. 1 overall pick Markelle Fultz being prone to injury since entering the NBA in 2017 with the Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando could be interested in Smith Jr. as an insurance policy for Fultz.

According to an NBA source, Orlando has shown interest in Dennis Smith Jr., so a bigger deal could work with the Magic if they swap the No. 8 and No. 15 slots.

Smith Jr. was the ninth overall pick in the 2017 draft out of NC State. The Dallas Mavericks traded the explosive point guard to the Knicks in the blockbuster Kristaps Porzingis trade in 2019.

DSJ has career NBA averages of 12.5 points, 3.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists with the Mavs and Knicks.

Since being acquired by the Knicks, Smith Jr. has really struggled. Many pundits around the NBA believe the 22-year-old needs to play for a winning team and get out of the dysfunctional nature the Knicks present

The Magic have made the playoffs in back-to-back seasons. Orlando lost to the Toronto Raptors in the first round of the 2019 postseason and fell to the Milwaukee Bucks in this year’s playoffs at Walt Disney World in the first round as well.

It’s going to be interesting to see which team Smith Jr. is on when the 2020-21 season starts.

Not Fultz, practical pathway would be Evan Fournier or DJ Augustin/Wesley Iwundu via sign and trade to facilitate a pick swap (Magic moving up to 8th). They would also like to dump James Ennis.

Not saying I'd go there myself if it was up to me. I have a soft spot for Iwundu, he's an off ball energy guy who will play to hard contact and honestly he's more valuable than DSJr would be on the Knicks.

If he does well, we can trade for value. If not, we let him walk.
somtimes things don’t work out. It happens.

The problem with DSJ is he’s a losing player. Stick him in your rotation and you are going to lose and that’s even when he is getting stats

Funny ****. Unlike Frank? You do know the Knicks record the last three years? Right?

I'm an Iwandu fan as well.

DSJ for Iwandu works for me.

DSJR has proven to be unstable. His body language is terrible and he didn't look right all last year. No lift or explosion. Fultz at least showed some flashes and appears to be more of a combo guard. Smith doesn't appear good at either position.

Frank is just puzzling. He made some winning plays in the world championship, just doesn't seem to know where the basket is, he should be knocking down open threes and 15 footers by know.

Maybe we just play them both together with RJ and do the OKC thing for a year. We need to increase someone's value this year, Knox included.

Both smith and Frank are “inconsistent”. We have seen them perform well at this level. Frank has biologically not matured up to expected timeline and he will have had 4 coach’s in three seasons. Add number 5 if you count Thibs. Both have had unstable situations to say the least. I think Coach Thibs and his new crew have a good idea where they want to go but they just won’t tell us. So we can talk all we want. Teams make disingenuous statements about the players and visa versa. I suspects change is a coming but don’t know when or how.
They had a mini camp before the season actually ended. Nobody knows when free agency is but one can guess December 1st. Normally we’d be in camp by now! Instead we just crowned a new champ.
My take is Both Frank and Dennis along with how many other players are busting their butts to get ready. I’m thinking one or the other is gone by next season but I’m jut playing logic. I hope both stick and kick ass. They are knicks, why wouldn’t I want that?

I don't know if NY is the place for Fultz, its a lot to deal with.

Frankie is a fine 3 pt shooter from the corners - a return of the Dentist. We build on that.

I wouldn't miss Knox if he was bundled out.

All the young guys on the Knicks have had the longest offseason of any NBA stretch, 6 months so far and probably 10 months realistic total. Most offseasons last 4 months?

This is where you step up and see what you got. All of the Knicks have had double the amount of time to add to their games and shore up whatever they want. No real game play competition but you do with what you can.

It's good that DSJr came early to mini camp, we shall see if the front office likes what they saw or validated what they have heard about for years

Guess we are going with names now? Its okay to have a discussion and disagree. If you need funny little names we can go there as well.

I will give you three guesses on what else changed about the Mavs last year?
If you understood the point it is that you can not make the assumption ONE tier two player can truly affect the overall standing of any team. So to blame one for their success of failure is short sighted.

In terms of "My boy". Is Smith a Knick? I root for all Knicks. Have defended Frank as well when some have said to trade him for scraps.

The Mavericks couldn’t wait to get rid of DSJ. They didn’t just get KP in the trade they got rid of a cancer pg. Cuban was giggling when he made that trade
