There is only one way to build the asset base to build a team though.

That's through the draft.

You either need

A) Draft picks to trade
B) Young players with their implied Bird Rights to trade to get other players, which are best acquired through the draft
C) Or draft capital to dump contracts to get a possible high end FA
D) Or draft capital to build AT COST CONTROL around your elite guys if you manage to get one in FA or trade

A drafted young player who looks like a breakout is worth more than volume of picks ( which will tend to be low in the near future if you do nab a high end FA)

The Clippers traded for Chris Paul

They traded several young players they got in previous drafts to do it. They were able to surround Paul with existing players acquired through previous drafts that didn't end up in the trade itself.

You sometimes have a point, but you rarely have any kind of context involved.

With the way the league is now, you can build a championship in 3 ys with FA and Trades.

You want gamble with the draft and end getting guys like Mudiay, burke, frank, knox, or a 100 other role players..Most experts don't even see RJ has a super star.

If the vets we acquired this off season start winning, then what you think happens to the young boys

You have to build up a talent base first. Knicks have the assets and cap flexibility to sign FAs and make trades while still having talent to fall back on.

They added Randle this offeseason as well as Portis. As well as added Barrett. They can add another multiple FAs next offseason if they so choose. Or they can make a trade during the season or in the offseason if they so choose. They also have 7 upcoming draft picks to play with.

The sarcrifices made these past seasons to rebuild has now give the Knicks tons of flexibility. They can add multiple quality pieces and still maintain depth and future assets.
