I don't dislike Trae Young but I really, really like Collin Sexton and would take him over Trae

Lets talk about how many players who are 6 feet or shorter and weigh about 170 pounds who have been successful in the NBA. Lets compare Young to those guys.

Sell me... Im all ears.

Fishmike--you watched two games end of season--Trae Young is an offensive engine who was over used not disciplined at times and then keyed on by whole teams. He will be hard to guard 1-1--he wont have 2-3 guys wrapped on him every play--he wont have to be over used he wont need to take 4 38 footers. He simply needs to run the offense extended the floor with 3's at 40%+ and make other players better. This guy isnt Adam Morrison--hes cat quick and very smart. I think hes a combination of Parker and Curry

Well I watched him all year and he still hasb't put it all together. at the beginning of the year he didn't meet a shot he didn't like. then he was over passing. By the tournament he basically just passed for the first 3/4s of a game and then turned into scorer.

I do think he's immensely talented and depending how the draft falls I would consider taking him... but he is not nearly as high on my board as yours

No we need a dynamic pg. Well we need a lot lol but we really need a pg. Trey Burke can be a Lou Williams off the bench type.

that would be the swing for the fences move. It would also make the Hardaway sigining look even more foolish.

Trae would probably help Tim.

I agree. Young/THJ to start Burke/Frank off the bench would be a lot of firepower. Draft or find a 3, and we're in good shape.

What's the take on Young defensively? Does he top out on what Burke is doing these days? My thought is that a long term backcourt of Burke/THJr is not very good defensively.

And a rotation of Young/THjr/Burke/Frank.... not sure if that's a solid deep playoff guard rotation IMHO

I think the general consensus on Young's defense is that he's going to be a negative anytime he doesn't outscore his opponent. He's not a good finisher yet, but his floater has potential. Is he going to come in and be better than Burke off the bat? No. In three to four years? Maybe. Honestly, I think Sexton is the safer pick, and I think Sexton is only being projected mid lottery because the PG class is so weak this year.

I like Sexton... he impressed me immensely against Kentucky in the SEC tourney. He was the best player on the court and Kentucky has a bunch of first rounders on their roster

I like Sexton's agressive mentality, but his decision making has me worried. He takes shots that are fine in college, but are going to be a lot tougher in the pros. It's a fine line because it's that agressive mentality that makes him special. But he's got to figure a way to rein it in.

Disagree. College systems are SO different than pro systems. Just look at so many really good NBA players that came from systems that were more important that individual stats and actually held them back in college. ie. Towns, Mitchell, Devin Booker etc. Think Mikal will have a lot more fredom to show his offensive skill.

Do agree that he is a safe pick. PG has always been tough to gauge. Young athletic ability is the only thing that worries me. He is really fast but if he had the leaping ability of a Smith Jr. or Mitchell, I would feel better about picking him. But hey, its anyones guess how any of these young guys will turn out.

He struck me as pretty low IQ. He tries to make passes and take shots that shouldnt be attempted plain and simple. For every thread the needle dunk resulting pass he makes a bad one and throws into a crowd. For every big 3 I see others contested from 5 feet beyond the arc.

He would have to come in and have to utterly wow in a workout. Show strength and skills he didnt show in college.

He is 100% "immensely talented" but he would be an NBA anomaly.

How do I draft him with Burke here? Burke was probably a better college player and is ready to help us now... obviously a lot depends on who is on the board...

How is left on the board will sway this pick. If young and bridges is there.....i may lean towards bridges but after doing some research to make sure his talent is constrained by the system. Otherwise I'm trying to pick a potential star and hope to find a gem. Regardless if Burke is ready for the starting role.....u pick the best player available. And look for trades using young as an asset. But how valuable is young? Are we overating him? The giants and knicks drafts will be interesting.

After watching the tourney.....i like Jalen Brunson more than bridges or young. I like SGA as well....

"safe" sounds like a negative and its shouldnt be. How about simply lower risk? You know Mikal is going to be a good BB player. He's got a sweet stroke. He's a MUCH better shooter was than Ariza in college and I think Ariza is probably Mikal's downside. Bridges has the tools to be a fanstic NBA player. A guy who gives you 15/7/3, makes ALL NBA defensive teams, guards 3-4 positions and is one of those guys who makes everyone better on a deep playoff team. That kinda guy. That looks more smart than safe to me... but we agree. Bridges is going to be player.

well the arguement would be how to quantify the "best player available."

Even if Bridges isnt an offensive star he's still a dead eye shooter who can defend 3-4 positions.

The difference between Isaiah Thomas on Sacramento, and Isaiah Thomas on the Celtics is the Celtics had a bunch of guys like Mikal Bridges and the Kings had a bunch of bad NBA players their front office was hoping would be stars.

The point? Guys like Isiah Thomas are easier to find that people think. Trey Burke dropped 40/12. If you surround Burke with guys who can defend multiple spots at a high level and suddenly Burke is a star and the KNicks are geniuses.

Mikal floor is Robert Horry and ceiling is Paul George.
He will be able to play both forward positions with his size.
Knicks will have choices. Trae young will be vetted thru team workouts and that will be his measure.
Steph Curry turned out so much better than expected. His shot was a work of art in college. It was his size that was an issue. He is quick enough to create space and problems when he penetrates. And he is on a really good team!!!
Im not Team Trae or Team Mikal.
If Trae we need to be prepared to see him thru a "Tyus Jones" phase while get matures.
I'll root like hell for either. Im a knick fan.

Unless someone is hyping a player as a defensive stopper, Im more concerned about their offense. These kids are trying to showcase their offense. When I see someone like Young, his ability to cover ground, his quick decision making. I wouldnt mind taking a chance on a player where his D is something of a question mark.

Bringing up Burke is a fair point. We drafted Jordan Hill, when we had Chris Wilcox. The difference for me is that Trae/Trey are PGs. Having two quality PGs on the roster would speed up the rebuilding procezs IMO by getting everyone on the same page faster.

I remember not expecting too much from Burke because he was supposed to be statistically the worst defensive PG in Gleague. While Burke is no stopper at this point, his D has been better than I thought it would be.

Might be the same case for Young, showcase your offensive skills first, worry more about D when you get to the league.

I hear you and hard to disagree. I see pros and cons in both trae and mikal. To me Trae has a higher ceiling and a lower floor. I said the same thing when we drafted KP....Higher ceiling but higher bust potential. I still see Trae has a swing trying to get a homerun. Bridges is a safe double. I'm fine with either player at this point, until predraft workouts and measurements begin. I have to do my research on Bridges motor, which is my only concern.

Right now, Burke is the only legit PG on the roster. Others are trying to play the position or too old / ready to coach (Jack). Now we could definitely go SF then find a PG and Center later in the draft. Question is whats the best way to fill up those three positions, with above average to star quality potential.

It would take a lot for Carter to fall to us in that mock. Sexton doesn't make much sense for the bulls right now, Luka and Jackson are too low and I expect things to flip much more. That said, I would be real happy with Carter.

If the Knicks insist on picking a PG, Sexton May be the better choice.

I'm not convinced that Trae is going to be a better player than Burke is for this team right now. I'd rather go for Mikal or Carter. The thing with Trae is that he's not only short but very slightly built and not very long or explosive. I don't see him matching up well with NBA PG's. Of course I could be wrong and he's able to overcome his physical limitations but I doubt it. I'm much more convinced that Mikal and Carter are NBA players that could slide right into defined roles on any NBA roster.

Based on most mock drafts.....1 of them should be available when we pick. Bridges or Carter......

I am sort of thinking the same. I like Young, he is a really fun player, but i think we would need to wait at least 3 years for him to be as good as Burke is right now, and that is if we are lucky and he is able to be a successful NBA player. I don't really see him as a superstar though, and unless we are sure he's a star, i would rather go with Bridges or Carter who have clearly defined roles in the league and are low-risk prospects.

If we have the 8th pick, we should strive for more than a rotation player. I think a 5 is more valuable for us and then a 3. I like Sexton over Trey
