If there was a shot at upgrading the starting PG position this season, this is it. If it was a first round pick instead, hard to argue with that call. If Willy played D, it wouldn't be such an easy decision IMO.
Willy is only 23.
KP 22.
Frank 19.
That's your young core. Especially now that the veterans aren't delivering the wins and we are falling out of the playoffs makes sense to trade the veterans for picks, establish a top 10 lottery position and get Willy/KP/Frank minutes out there.
The dumbest thing to do would be to try and win a ring with this team. They don't have the vets or firepower. You trade Willy if you are going to get into the top 4 of the East. In our case it will be far from a lock we make the playoffs even if we traded Willy.
This is where I trusted Phil. Hope Mills is patient and sees the bigger picture. The team in two years needs to feature KP in his prime as a superstar physically ready to carry, Frank as a starting two way floor general, Willy as an elite 6th man all 25 and younger. Meanwhile in those two years having added young talent at 3 and 2 to complement that group. Knicks should be thinking about 2019-20 season. Even if THj keeps his play up, that's a group that could be ready in that season to make some sort of real run.
The Kyle OQuinns, CLees, Thomas even Beasley all gone 2 years from now. So the franchise has to be smart as think longterm. It's one thing if we were 20-14 and a fifth seed. We are 10 and struggling. We need to think longterm and Willy fits. Cheap contract and a player that may improve with time.
I keep saying this but biggest mistake we could make is to trade Willy and pay big money to Kanter and OQuinn. For all we know in a year or two KP may be our main 5. League is fast now. I still see KP in his prime getting at least 20 min a game at the 5.
Willy has played professionally for a while now, here and abroad. Dont want a post player on the Knicks who is that much of a liability on defense. Bears repeating that Willy said he was going to work on his D over last summer, and it actually looked worse this season. He is getting outworked for minutes.
Like David Lee, ambidextrous, good post player, jazzhands defense. Wanted him gone too. Willy's D would have to take a big leap this season not to want to see him moved to address the PG situation. Either now, or next season. It cant just be Frank and 3rd stringers, now matter how hard they play.
