They desperately wanted Ron back and overpaid on a short term contract instead of being forced to match an offer sheet which might have 4 years long and very expensive - didn't want to take that rosk..

Can they get some cap space back too? For example, a player with a non-guarenteed contract, who they can simply waive. I thought houston had or was looking for those type of contracts. That could open some more space too.

Not sure what your question is - they renounced Ron's qualifying offer which created about $700k in additional cap space and used an exception to resign him which was limited to 2 years in length

You guys are crying about 8.9 mill over 2 years like it's 80 mil over 2 years. This is a respect counteract. Baker works hard and is a good example of the kind of guy we need at every position. Baker gotta get his shooting percentages up... if he does then the contract is a steal.

Again the Knicks off season is still underway.... no telling what is going to happen

no...he isn't...Justin Holiday was a steal at the same price.

with Lee, THJr, Dotson on team.... I think that's an easy Baker answer.

Dotson is a 2nd rd pick that never played in the nba. Baker looked okay in Orlando and played like crap offensively.

Dotson will be the 3rd SG on the team, why would you want Holiday over Baker (who plays PG).

Now Baker shot poorly this year but was also learning the PG spot. He played decent D. I think he will improve his shooting numbers.

And not for nothing but Holiday, at age 28, shot 43% and 36% from 3pt land. Not killer numbers.

why do they NEED a veteran PG? reporting like this just really pisses me off. there's no requirement to have one (which is how it makes it sound) and maybe the team is happy with what they have and don't want a veteran eating minutes.

It s not a good contract business wise but it shows that the constant media narrative that the knicks are hated by the players is erronous.
The knicks treat their players well. This contract shows what they value even if it s above the market value.
Jennings last year was waived because he wanted to go in the playoffs, same thing with amare or prigioni. Players notice that. The knicks are not a good organisation, yes but they are very accomodating with their players.

I think he will improve to be he has a long way to even become an average player. Is there anything he did on the court to show that he is worth that much money.

You never know what a guy shows in practice. Jeff sees a lot of himself in Baker, and maybe that translates to something VERY good. Tons of guys in the NBA have talent but only those how take their business seriously and work extremely hard succeed.

Contracts are not always handed out on what you have done, especially for such a young player. Could be that another team offered something close and the Knicks decided it was worth it to keep him at that price.

Sometimes you do pay for potential.

Baker as undrafted rookie had choices. He came to knicks. He worked hard, had some real good games, showed some very good potential and now he knows he is valued and has a commitment from team.
We developed a player from outside the draft.

Ad him to the list of yoots!!

Willy, Ron, KP, Frank!!!!!!

Congrats to Ron!!!! You are an NBA player!

This sound about right

26% 3pt shooting
37% fg shooting

Gets you 9 million dollars

I'm starting to think mills negotiated the Noah deal and Melos contract

Yeah,..these moves fall in line with what we've been doing since signing Jr smiths brother..no back up for Tyson, and now we sign a back up before getting a starting pg..

Still working the Smith Brothers angle right?

No real problem with the contract. It seems high, but it's pennies in today's market. The problem I have is that we had to use the room exception in the first place. I'll wait until after the Melo trade to vent, but that TH Jr...

dude went from 400k to 9 million after playing 28 of a possible 82 games, and we only won 1 game when he played and melo didn't..

More than I thought he'd get, but I do like that NY is taking care of their own. Also seems to aid the pitch for undrafted players to sign with us. Get guaranteed money like Plumlee or Kornet. If you perform well enough and play hard enough, there's opportunity for you.

This Ron Baker situation is a lot more complicated than it appears on the surface. As a non bird Gilbert Arenas restricted free agent, the Knicks could match an offer sheet using cap space or one of their available exceptions (in this case, the room exception). They could only match using the room exception if the contract was 2 years or less at the room level. Otherwise, they would have to dip into existing cap space - which introduces a fair bit of uncertainty as to what their cap space might be. Retaining Baker was clearly a priority and in the end they opted for certainty as to available cap space by coming to an agreement first thing on a 2 year room exception deal.

This, at the least, indicate some cap management savvy even if you don't agree with the Hardaway signing.

Yeah, I am at a loss why we resigned this guy. Just because he was the only pg on the team that at least tried on defense? Dude shot like crap last year and unless he has drastically improved his shot, he is not worth $4.5 mill a year. That kid Alex Caruso from the lakers looks to be twice the pg that Baker is and we could have signed for minimum. The moves the Knicks are mking simply boggle my mind.

A lot of you lack loyalty. This has always been the case you show loyalty to guys who look out for themselves over team and disparage the one who are all about the team. Baker is a good player and he showed positive incremental improvements as the season went on. He is worth the 4.5 million.
