You think he's leaving $42 mil of 56 mil on the table in a buyout? Just with the hope some other team will pay him over $20 mil a year? Do players ever leave 3/4 of their contracts on the table in a buyout? I don't think so but I could be wrong. Usually they get like 90 plus percent I believe. Melo doesn't stand anything to benefit from taking one penny less than what he thinks the Knicks will offer him. If he leaves $42 mil on the table, he could possibly get that back in a new contract but it would mean he's limited to teams with cap space and he's going to handicap his new team by taking up a lot of their cap space.

Melo won't leave with a big discount unless he knows he can make most of it up. you don't think Lebron will cut JR's break line on his car to free up $15 mil over two years? You don't think anyone will pay Melo at least $30 million? Thats our payout of 26mil stretched to 5 years is 5.2 mil on our cap. JJ Reddick thought to be worth $18mil. Hey, I could be all wrong too.

Cleveland can't just eliminate JR and free up $15 mil. They're way over the cap even without JR. Do I think anyone will pay Melo $30 mil over 2 years? Yes. Do I think that vastly limits Melo's options? Yes. Melo's not going to limit his options just to help the Knicks. If the Knicks were paying him $50 mil and he was looking to recoup only $6 mil, he could go anywhere he wanted. Melo handicaps his next team the least and keeps his options the most open if he expects the new team just to give him a league min salary (around $2.5 mil a year for a 10+ year veteran) and has the Knicks paying the rest of his paycheck. I think that's typically what happens when someone with a high salary is bought out. No team can sensibly expect a player to leave $30 mil on the table. That defeats the whole purpose of signing a guaranteed contract (and having a NTC and a trade kicker put in).

Yeah, Me lo is trying to leave the most money on the Knicks book as he can to help his new team. It makes little sense to leave as much as Nalod is suggesting because the teams he wants to go to all have cap problems and wants a discounted Melo.

Willy liked Melo's tweet. I smell a malcontent. Move him or he gets with the program. No way you can bring in Josh Jackson despite his tremendous talent. He is passionate and wants to win and might speak up about f'd up stuff that isn't a part of winning. Probably a lot more of his kind in the draft. Stay away from talent. Guys that are desperate to be in the league and will comply to any ish you throw at them is the way to go.

Phil had every right to be pissed at Melo for his lack of loyalty. Phil gave him everything he wanted in his contract and Melo gave his word he'd BUY IN. Phil didn't say a word at that Team Meeting early in the season and Melo was all happy about that in the press but Phil i'm sure felt betrayed. Melo's power play is NOT what this team needed.

Therein lies the rub. Our best or highest paid players played laxidasical defense, threw soft passes, and chucked shot. They also often took contested shots when other teammates were wide, wide open. They were not leading by example, and they hated getting called out on it.

Listen, if Melo and Rose set good examples of play and our record still sucked, fans would be feeling very differently and more heartedly questioning Phil, the system, and the direction of the team

But when the plan sounds good, has worked in the past, and the players are loafing for all to see, they deserve blame from the team and the fans. This is why Melo gets such a reaction. If he were KG where you you felt he's still giving you everthing he had (not taking plays off) people would have a much different perception of the system
