Rebuilding and Melo don't go in the same sentence
He's 33 in decline and has a high usage low assist rate while holding on to the ball long. Not good match for a rebuilding team.
I guess it's more important for some to see Melo play and get stats than be in a better position long term.
As for shine for KP, the lol on that is huge. KP gets hype regardless (too much so in my opinion). He's ranked 6th on the young players on the rose list. He just won a guard skill challenge at all star weekend. Melo actually helps protect KP from the bad side of NY which is they will blame you as the best player if your team loses.
At first trading Melo will actually hurt KPs hype and all that. I could care less. What I care about is having a team of 4-5 young in prime starters who can grow together and win basketball games. KP can be one of those players. It's a guard league right now if Knicks are going to be good it will not be with KP alone. This team neeeds a great guard and he will take shine/attention from KP. So what? Get god players in their prime that play D. That's the goal.
This all is just based on opinion. The thing I keep telling you is that he has a NTC! He is not going anywhere. So why not focus on real solutions. I like KP but think all the hype is overblown. Which is par for the course in NY. Is he a very good young player? Absolutely. Is he ready to be rushed into leading a franchise? Absolutely not. He has a lot to learn and may have the type of game that does not take advantage of his major strengths. His height and atheleticism. Not that he can't and not that he won't, but just not yet.
It's clear according to him, if management came to him and told him they wanted to rebuild, he would move on. Unless he is lieing about that. He has made it clear he wants to stay in NY unless NY wants to rebuild and go in another direction.
The issue I have with Melo's spot on the team. So long as Melo is here, the team won't go for a full rebuild. When you have an all-star level player who drops 25 a night and is making 25 million a year, the pressure is there to win now. We've tried for so many years now to try and win around Melo. We've just gotten nowhere.
My thinking process is based on taking Melo at face value. That he would want to move on if the Knicks are rebuilding. What the Knicks currently are doing is trying to add some young talent but also trade/sign veterans to help get more competitive in the short run. Before Jackson got to NY, they weren't even trying to get young talent, rather trade for as many 7+ year experienced NBA players as possible to make a run. It led to one decent season, and the rest have all been lottery.
So I repeat, if Melo is telling the truth that the Knicks come to him that they are re-building he will move on, then I see no reason to be concerned about the NTC. The worry I have is the Knicks are not planning to re-build. They are going to keep trying to get some big names in free agency. Such as Chris Paul this summer. When they strike out, they'll make more moves like they've made already such as D-Rose, Noah, Lee. None of those are really bad moves if you're trying to win now, it's just that it's not going to happen (win now) so why waste time in the short run? It's win-win if Melo goes plays on a team where he is the second or third best player, and he can try to win a championship and for us we aim/strive to get 4-5 young good players. We already have two, we aren't that far off from being a good young team.
