FTs, TOs, and low assists lower his efficiency, though. There's more to offensive than just scoring from the field. He still has a good offensive rating, though it's below Rolo's. We'd have a team with much bigger names but I'm not sure they'd win more.
You wanna talk about FT%? How about other teams getting into the penalty faster with Howard in the mix. You simply can't guard EVERYTHING when you have that many threats on the floor. How exactly does a team focus on any one aspect of the Knicks with Rose, Melo, KP and Howard on the floor? You end up with bad choices no matter what you do. Teams can't give help and not leave a deadly player open somewhere. You put KP and Rose in a High PnR, Melo behind the 3pt line and Howard Baseline and that just leaves way too much space to try and help and recover. God forbid they have a 3pt SG out there too.
Mind you i'm no fan of Howard and don't really want him but I can understand how they would see it as an option.
