sounds very much like an opportunistic, out of touch stage parent. all the "support" he has provided still smells like exploitation.
Yup. Show a good face, say all the right things...when the chips are down, where the FUQ is Chucky Okafor? Where is he now and why is your 19 year kid going out to clubs and bars when he can't even legally drink?
Chucky Okafor...lead nominee for Bad Parent of the year.
Chuck & DK,
I say this not trying to be entirely sarcastic but just wondering about the lens through which you're looking at these scenarios. So Okafor's dad is a bad guy and a "Stage Mom" for raising his son as a single parent after his mom died but moving to America to live off of your newly minted superstar son's dime (or at the very least possibly perceived as being an entourage of hangers on especially since the brother is now his "manager" despite not previously being in that business). Now I'm not really trying to paint the Porzingis family in a bad light but I realize that everything in life is about context and who we extend the benefit of the doubt to and who we dont based off of our perception of who and what they are and most importantly how we relate to them. Seriously, how would you feel if the situations were reversed???
the signs were there all along, and plain to see as far back as the ncaa tournament-- at least to me. no amount of fluff pieces and sob stories is going to change what is roiling under the surface of things. had the mother not suddenly and tragically died, the father's presence in the son's life would not have been close to what it had to be by necessity.
straight talk now: the father never grew up, and as soon as the son was old enough to get noticed, the father found a meal ticket. that is not "support." that is the sort of familial exploitation that cannot go on without repercussions, especially in the face of adversity.
had jahlil okafor had a true mentor for any length of time we would not be talking about him... because he would have a center of gravity that he does not presently possess. being nineteen and "doin' stuff" is a glib way of dismising what is going on with him. you and others need to see self-destructive behavior for what it is and try to get to the heart of the matter.
if the situation were reversed i would arrive at the same exact assessment. meantime, when he gets the help he needs, okafor could possibly turn things around and blossom into a self-possessed adult. meantime he is a mess.
knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%
