Very good assessment on LeBron vs. Melo..But you just defined role players in JR and Shump..If they weren't inconsistent they would be stars...The problem now is what they experienced with the Knicks..They are put in a situation where more is needed...They need to now play like second fiddle players...You will see their warts when this happens...

Shump and JR are great when you look at them as your 4th/5th/6th options on offense. You can forgive JR Smith for a few boneheaded fouls and fouling out when he's not a top option. You can forgive Shumpert when he makes a brilliant defensive play in overtime, then goes for an out of control layup in a one-on-one situation.

But Cleveland's team NOW is better than the 2013-2014 Knicks that got knocked out by the Pacers from a talent perspective - mostly because Melo had his damaged shoulder. It's fascinating to see how even this team resorts to isolations/one-on-5 play just like the Knicks did.

Minimally if they want to save Lebron's energy, have the other guys dribble the ball up and hand it to Lebron at half court. And come on, run some plays.

Crush said they are reporting on CBS radio that Cleveland is using Woodson's offense because they had to...

LBJ grew up playing pg, mastered it by the age of 16..No other player his size has ever had the skills and vision. To compare him to anybody would be ignorant, not magic, not bird, not melo, kobe.

this guy is 265lbs 6 9", runs faster then most pg's, and is stronger then anyone his size..I get so sick of people comparing LBJ to any great player... when I compare players it's like CP3 Vs stockton or nash, or MJ vs Kobe, guys that played the same position.

Melo is not a passing Point foward, like a mason, pipin, LBJ, he's a traditional FWD the looks to post, shoot jumpers, and occasionally pass. why the hell would i compare him to LBJ who can play like 5 positions

Yep, I've never really understood the criticism that Melo is not as good as Lebron. Duh! I get that people think he's selfish and does't try to play defense 70% of the time, but how is him not being as good as the best player or two in the nba a legitimate criticism? It's like saying John Wall isn't as good as Steph Curry, therefore he is trash.

Lebron is the greatest player of this current generation with his superior combination of size, skill and intelligence...enough said. I personally hate comparing players from different era. So many things have changed and the conditions and competition levels are so different. We should just celebrate the greats for who they are.
Carmelo is who he is. He's a gifted offensive scorer and a better than average rebounder for his position. I think he's a top 20 all-star but, obviously, falls short of a franchise player. He was at his best when he had a floor general point guard to allow him to get more unforced scoring opportunities. Seems his critics are focusing on his impact vs. his contract. His near-max salary is the result of timing and market conditions. Don't blame him...his history was that he opts for the security of guaranteed big money. If anything blame Knicks management if they projected him to be something he wasn't.

I think the point of this thread comes down to dollars and cents.
Not a single person in this thread has defended Melo as being as good as Lebron. It is clear he is not.
Therefore, from a Money Ball perspective, it does not make any sense that he should be paid as much as Lebron,
since to compete for a title against a team with Lebron on it, you will need to get other very good/great players
to team up with your Melo/Durants/what-have-you to beat him. From a team building view, the only player that
should be making the max contract of $20+M is Lebron, and everyone should scale down from there.
The problem is that the business of basketball is not only about winning, but
a) putting asses in the seats and jerseys on people's backs,
b) teams are sometimes run by egomaniacs and morons such as Dolan that make decisions that cripple the team for years.

I don't understand why we are even comparing the two. Lebron is top 3 player all time and when it's all said and done will likely be a pickem with Jordan.

As good as Lebron was last night, he almost suffered defeat with JR committing 3 horrible fouls down the stretch. Few if any players in league history are going to elevate the guys Lebron played with in game 2. Nice roll players, but to keep them in the game was an accomplishment. Kobe in his prime would have lost that game by double figures.

there are diff tiers:

1 - Lebron
2 - KD, AD, Curry, Harden, CP3, Paul George
3 - Parker, Blake, K Leonard, Marc Gasol, Klay Thompson
4 - Cousins, Aldridge, Westbrook, Melo, Love, Butler
5 - DJordan, Lilliard, Kyrie etc ...

that is how they deserve to be paid - according to their tier / rank

So the fact that bron hook up with 2 other all stars doesn't take away from his so called greatness. This dude is one of the best players to play the game, thats as far as it goes..
