Yep, I've never really understood the criticism that Melo is not as good as Lebron. Duh! I get that people think he's selfish and does't try to play defense 70% of the time, but how is him not being as good as the best player or two in the nba a legitimate criticism? It's like saying John Wall isn't as good as Steph Curry, therefore he is trash.
I think the point of this thread comes down to dollars and cents.
Not a single person in this thread has defended Melo as being as good as Lebron. It is clear he is not.
Therefore, from a Money Ball perspective, it does not make any sense that he should be paid as much as Lebron,
since to compete for a title against a team with Lebron on it, you will need to get other very good/great players
to team up with your Melo/Durants/what-have-you to beat him. From a team building view, the only player that
should be making the max contract of $20+M is Lebron, and everyone should scale down from there.
The problem is that the business of basketball is not only about winning, but
a) putting asses in the seats and jerseys on people's backs,
b) teams are sometimes run by egomaniacs and morons such as Dolan that make decisions that cripple the team for years.
yup all true.
there are diff tiers:
1 - Lebron
2 - KD, AD, Curry, Harden, CP3, Paul George
3 - Parker, Blake, K Leonard, Marc Gasol, Klay Thompson
4 - Cousins, Aldridge, Westbrook, Melo, Love, Butler
5 - DJordan, Lilliard, Kyrie etc ...
that is how they deserve to be paid - according to their tier / rank
so here is what phil is thinking ....
