Not at the pace he plays.
its not the pace, its the inability to recoup. I had one of my knees totally done in my mid 20s. It ended my full contact football days, but I still played amateur hardball for over 10 years after, at a pretty high level. I played very well on it, and that often meant 4 games in 2 days as we would travel and play alot of these weekend tourneys. However it would often take me 2 whole weeks to recover. Swelling, soreness, stiffness.. eventually it would go down and I could still run really well (about a tenth of a second slower than Panos
).Point is I could still play, still run, still compete, still lift and do all those things at about 80% of what I did before, except I needed rest. If I was a pro my career would be over, and I have no doubt that will treatment, constant icing, etc etc that I could have played MORE, and that playing MORE would also have reinjured it eventually. Sometimes its just too much stress
Rose's game was/is so based on what was near superhuman athletic ability, that it might be hard for him to reshape himself if he no longer has that raw athleticism.
As you say, the recovery time is also a factor, and the NBA is quite a grind, even for guys who have never been injured.
You would really have to monitor his minutes and probably keep him out of back to back games. Even then, he might not have the physical tools to play the way he is used to playing, and I just don't see him as one of those "crafty veteran players" who can easily adapt to diminished speed and jumping ability.
We will see how much he is slowed by this latest setback.
