Smarter shot selection? If they have better shot selection why are their shooting percentages abysmal.

defenses have improved at the same rate? If you look at shot charts, you'll be amazed at the decrease in mid range jump shots and increase in 3s, especially corner 3s. A team from the 90s that doesn't even know the particular importance of protecting against corner 3s on defense and the importance of staying away from mid range shots on offense would be at a big disadvantage.

Defense has improved? Man now your just making excuses defense is at an all time low. There is no hand checking, player effort level on the defensive side is at an all time low. Face the reality of the situation skill level has dwindled over years along with knowledge of the game.

Defenses have improved in the sense that the players are more athletic and they know now to overprotect certain areas like corner 3s. Regardless, the more important point is that the premise we're discussing ("shooting percentages are abysmal") is false.

defenses are certainly now at a disadvantage since the rule changes such as hand checking and defensive 3 seconds.

these rules along with advanced metrics has certain contributed to the higher efficiency levels that we see today.

Also, now that all this is tracked, players can't get away with just chucking and hoping that everyone is just dumb eye test people.
