Until we see Melo become a more consistently well-rounded player he will remain an overpaid gunner.
I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
He's our best player. We need him to lead by example and play tough D and move the rock, etc. etc. etc.
I keep finding myself nodding my head in agreement to your posts. Well said.
I get why people dislike Melos game. I was never a huge fan. But he's a knick so I'm obliged to hope for the best and I hope Phil and fisher can get through to him as you said he actually has upside.
In an alternate, hypothetical universe made of string cheese and Grateful Dead t-shirts, if the NBA let Phil draft one player from every team, he may not have wanted Melo. But he inherited a capped out team with little to build on if Melo left. Phil bit off a mouthful coming here.
Yet, Phil would have let Melo walk if he was not suitable for the Triangle, but lo and behold he largely is.
As a non-Melo head myself, I have something to be happy about then, because the marriage of Phil and Melo is likely going to produce the best Melo we can hope for.
And Melo is a baller. His shooting efficiency could go a career high soon.
I was not a fan of ISO-Melo, but I could be a happy camper with Tri-Melo.
I'm hoping he excels in all areas of the game now. Do I expect it? Not really. But if he really steps it up all-around, he will be excellent.
