What Melo has in his favor is talent. If he wants to improve, he still has real upside.

Until we see Melo become a more consistently well-rounded player he will remain an overpaid gunner.

I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

He's our best player. We need him to lead by example and play tough D and move the rock, etc. etc. etc.

I keep finding myself nodding my head in agreement to your posts. Well said.

I get why people dislike Melos game. I was never a huge fan. But he's a knick so I'm obliged to hope for the best and I hope Phil and fisher can get through to him as you said he actually has upside.

Not for nothing, but i have to side with knickscity. It has been well documented

2012

With Carmelo Anthony facing his eighth first-round playoff exit in nine seasons Sunday, Knicks interim coach Mike Woodson issued a challenge to the star forward to come back in better shape next season.
According to a person familiar with the situation, Knicks interim coach Mike Woodson issued a challenge to the star forward to come back in better shape next season. Knicks interim coach Mike Woodson issued a challenge to the star forward to come back in better shape next season. Anthony, who has been outclassed by the Heat’s LeBron James in this first-round disaster, has the worst NBA playoff winning percentage, .308 (a record of 16-36), for any player who has been in at least 50 games.

“Expectations aren’t going to change in New York, you know that,’’ Woodson said. “They shouldn’t. Rightfully so. Anthony’s going to have to raise his game. He’s got to do things this summer to better his game — as well as Tyson [Chandler] and Amar’e [Stoudemire]. If I’m the head coach here, I have to make sure it happens. It’s the only way to get out of the rut in terms of him being a first-round exit. He’s got to change that.”
With the Knicks trailing the Heat 3-0, Anthony is shooting 34.4 percent in the series (22 of 64). He is 1 of 9 from 3-point range. In seven playoff games as a Knick, all defeats, he is shooting 36.2 percent..

In Game 1, Anthony scored just 11 points. He faded in Game 2 in the second half. In Game 3 on Thursday at the Garden, Anthony was flat for four quarters, shot 7 of 23 with five turnovers.
Anthony has complained about double- and triple-coverage, but he hasn’t made Miami pay. Perhaps that’s why Woodson made the point of Anthony elevating teammates.
“I like to see [that] and he’s made major strides this year,’’ Woodson said. “We started this journey, he made guys around him better and he was better for it. That has to be a continuation. I got to push him to be in better shape when you start the season. A lot of things that got to be changed. Not a lot of things, but … There’s got to be some changes to get to the next level.’’

Maybe it's the way phil communicated to him is why he finally decided to at least lose a little weight.

To some degree he was a little out of shape for the work load they gave him. Had he been avg 30 to 35 minutes, it would have done him and the team some good, but the help wasn't there..

In an alternate, hypothetical universe made of string cheese and Grateful Dead t-shirts, if the NBA let Phil draft one player from every team, he may not have wanted Melo. But he inherited a capped out team with little to build on if Melo left. Phil bit off a mouthful coming here.

Yet, Phil would have let Melo walk if he was not suitable for the Triangle, but lo and behold he largely is.

As a non-Melo head myself, I have something to be happy about then, because the marriage of Phil and Melo is likely going to produce the best Melo we can hope for.

And Melo is a baller. His shooting efficiency could go a career high soon.

I was not a fan of ISO-Melo, but I could be a happy camper with Tri-Melo.

I'm hoping he excels in all areas of the game now. Do I expect it? Not really. But if he really steps it up all-around, he will be excellent.

People need to be aware that it's not necessary for Melo to completely change his game in order to be successful in the Triangle. It's always been a part of the Triangle for the star player to get the ball and make something happen after trying to run the Triangle but being unsuccessful. It's gonna happen often, but the good thing is that it's not happening as often as we've seen in the past when we had too many ISO situations.

It's going to have a positive impact for this team to be practicing all this ball and player movement for the entire year. They're going to get better at this and everyone will be involved as opposed to what happened last year. We can already see the beginnings of a much improved defense and offense. It's an equal opportunity system and so IMO we can trust the team!!! It's not just gonna be about a few guys.

Melo just needs to make his decisions quickly. Either make his move, pass back out, hit a cutter or swing the ball, but don't lapse into pounding the ball for 10 seconds and jacking a shot.

Other than that, Melo can be his ole freaky self and drink red bull and eat friend plantains til the cows come home.
