I would give him a chance since he's been watching the league for sometime now as an announcer. When he went to Houston , he showed us what kind of a coach he was after inheriting Pat Riley's concepts with veteran players.
He talked a good game , but he himself was very limited offensively. If he hired an offensive minded lead assistant I would get excited. But the most important thing would be if he and the GM and Owner were all thinking the same way. If not it's just a marketing hire (coming for the money his Honda Civic is breaking down), like the signing of Amare but from a front office perspective.
I couldn't have said this any better. I was wondering why everybody was so high on JVG. What I remember was a coach that inherited veteran players that already knew how to play defense, and a coach that lacked an offensive system. Basically a short white version of Woodson. I remember falling asleep watching the knicks plenty of times, just to wake up to a loud chant of Defense, with a final score of 66-69
But I will give JVG some credit for his knowledge of the game...Listening to him as an announcer proves that he has grown a lot as far as NBA knowledge of the game. Plus he now demands more respect than the average Woody type coach.
I think over the years following JVG, we either hire a defensive coach, without an offensive assistant. Or an offensive coach, without a deffensive assistant. Whenever all of the stars finally align, the knicks will be back on top again. Long enough for Dollan to knock us back down.
