Even that shot looked great leaving his hand, looked right on the money, and just didn't go in. But that doesn't take away all the game winning shots he has made before. He is one of the most respected closers in the game, along with kobe.

Oh...insults again. Read the thread someone used that one already.

Joe, you thought that was an insult response? I thought it was thoughtful. Did I read you wrong?

Twice in this thread. Called holfresh on the same thing. Melo may have been a closer in Denver but his game has been totally different since he got here. He has tried to turn himself into a jump shooter. He isn't. People want to view this as hate? Fine. The want to view it as not knowing the game? Fine. Throw around the insults and **** but I am personally worried. I was a big fan of his game in Denver. He played bully ball on offense. I loved it.

One of the most devestating, versatile, explosive offensive forces in the league has turned himself into a more skilled version of Steve Novak and it's ok. It's ok we haven't seen Melo post up in 3 years. It's ok because on a team who needs post offense because it is a 3 pointer and jump shooting team, take what is arguably the best post player at his position if not in the league and turn him into a jump shooter. It's ok to let our most skilled player and possibly the most skilled and versatile player on offense in the league and turn him into a one dimensional offensive presence.

Tell you what, people want to think say "oh whoever must have started watching basketball yesterday" I submit people who believe Melo is the same player he was in Denver must not have known WHAT they were watching in their long storied history of watching this game.

I think you are overreacting.

Please show me difference in Melo Den and Melo NY: http://hoopdata.com/player.aspx?name=Carmelo%20Anthony

the article talks about the Linsanity year also.

And you say this:

He has tried to turn himself into a jump shooter.

I mean do you watch Knick basketball? Melo has always had a great midrange game, but he also attacks the basket all the time. On top of that I believe he may have the best second jump in the NBA. He attacks the rim and if it doesnt fall many many times puts his own shot back, sometimes on te 3rd attempt even. Melo is a jump shooter? What the hell is going on around here

In terms of recent clutch performance, Melo is not there.

The while idea of needing a closer is the problem. Need smart plays. It will benefit Melo for Woodson to mix up the play calling once in a while. Keep defenses on their toes guessing

I think the problem most fans have, including myself is that in end of game situations everyone (fans, the other team, etc) know exactly what is going to happen.

1. Give ball to Melo.
2. Everyone else stand around while time ticks down.
3. Contested jump shot.

It's not a recipe for success, and more of the blame lands on Woodson's shoulders for not dictating something different. It reminds me of the last game in the Boston series when the Knicks went into the iso ball with about 5 minutes left in the game.

PGs and the coach. We have very little ability to create anything when defenses clamp down. Regular season games againt the Bucs Felton looks great. Playoff crunchtime? Not so much (maybe we need to play 3 PGs?)

This has been Woody's calling card since I have seen him coach. Iso-Joe isnt a joke. Crunch time was spread the floor and let Joe Johnson take the best shot he can get. When he's not using MDA's playbook its only because hes calling ISO for Melo and that wasnt in the MDA playbook.

How about running a pick and roll? How about running anything?

He has done this and can do this again but he has to want it badly and I personally believe he doesn't want it bad enough. How does a player start a game out making 4out of 5 shots and then goes on a streak of 6-8 straight misses. It's not the misses that bothers me as much as it is the indifference of shot selection. Most great players miss 2 or 3 straight jumpers and the next time they touch the ball they are hell bent on getting to the basket and score or get fouled. But Melo is all to content doing the same again and again settling for a jumper.

That last shot he took needed to go the basket hard almost hell bent put the pressure on the Bulls and the refs a jumper in that situation only bailed the Bulls and Refs out.

No real answer for that except that is what you get when you are a streak scorer..... carmelo is a streak scorer, which is why I never considered him as great of a scorer as many label him as..

I have no idea who gave him that label it might have been some marketing guy from NBA or Nike but he isn't the best at scoring. Melo isn't consistent with it that is for sure if he is taking 24 shots to get 22 points.

Knicks fans, Barkley, a few other talking heads.. you hear that year in and year out and when you dissagree you are labeled a hater.. well at least I am... haha

Thinking about the shot last night I can't help but wonder what would have happened if they used melo as a decoy and used Hardaway to take that shot. That would be an incredibly ballsy move and 90% of coaches wouldn't have the guts to do it. I don't think the bulls d would be expecting that at all and Hardaway is a great spot-up shooter when open. Had he been on the floor and received a melo kickout I think he'd hit it if the bulls sagged off. I mean if he hits that shot his confidence would just go absolutely through the roof. To be clear, I didn't expect Woodson to do this, I know how hard it would be to give the shot to a rookie in that situation, I'm just thinking of the good that could have come from such a play.

Yea. Just started watching literally tonight. What a dumb ignorant ****ing comment. Stupid comments like that is why I rarely post here anymore. instead of discussion, you get insulted. It was SO much better back in the day.

Either way, the last two Aprils when he was player of the month....How did he do in May? Better yet, how about June? Oh, he wasn't playing in June? My bad.

Let's get serious here. Carmelo is one of the transcendent offensive players of his time. I actually mean that. At least during his time in Denver. In NY he has turned into a NON-presence in the post, a 6-8, 250 pound jump shooter. When was the last time we saw one of those strong spinning drives to the basket he was famous for in Denver?

Being a closer and being a high volume scorer are two totally different things. Kobe=closer. Jordan=closer. Wade=closer. Durant=closer. Joe Johnson=scorer. Dominique Wilkins=scorer. Mitch Richmond=scorer. Vince Carter=scorer. Carmelo Anthony=scorer.

Wade is not a closer, neither is Bron for that matter...As per a discussion, let's have it...How do you ignore what occurred the last two Aprils where he made big basket after big baskets to get us to the playoffs??.. You bring up his production in June when he has faced the best teams in the league, alone...He was stopped by Kobe and Shaq, Tim Duncan, Manu and Tony Parker...LeBron James, Wade and Bosh...Pierce, KG, Rondo, and Ray Allen...The only instance he had legit help he got to the WCF...I mean, let's be fair, are u really going to hold not getting by these teams as his short coming??..Last May he went strong to the hole many a games...Hibbert was doing the body block and he didn't get the call, what can I say...This is the second game of the season, October still..Why isn't he getting it done 100% of the times..Are we really serious here???

wade isn't a closer? lebron isn't a closer? go back and look at 2006 finals.. lebron speaks for himself... closing is just not jacking up shots..

The only instance he had legit help he got to the WCF

that is becoming so overused....

let me ask you this.. carmelo had the ball twice last night to put the knicks either ahead 4 or win the game.. one shot was a brick, the other he threw the ball out of bounds, the last shot, guarded man on man, he bricked a 24 foot jumper.. tell me, how would having lebron or CP3 on his team help him make those shots or not throw the ball away?

Bernard King = CLOSER. A much better version of Melo, a pure scorer, but efficient, with killer instincts.

to me, bernard is nothing like carmelo, but I agree, he was a sure fire closer. efficient as hell, the crazy thing with him, it seemed the more he shot the ball, the better his % would get.....

Nice to finally see some sensible posts instead of everyone coming down on Melo or defending Melo as a closer. Or arguing amongst posters over agendas

This is on the coach. Last night was definitely not the first time. There is a long history

To be honest with everyone, and I can't be anything but honest with you guys anymore,

I think we can let Melo live a little bit.

What do you want from him? Huh? He is what he is. Is it fair to demand he change into something he just isn't meant to be?

Is he giving himself the fat contracts and the cool shoes?

He's probably a better natural scorer than LeBron. His shot is purer. His nose for the hoop is as keen as a marmot's for the fish in the creeks.

Think about this and remember it:

With Melo on Knicks we are just one piece away from dominating the NBA and winning multiple chips. That's what Dolan sees and we don't: we're one piece away. When that piece gets here many of our friends on this board will be eating the crows.

You are right, carmelo is what he is, and that is what you see.. Maybe the problem is he sees himself as something different, and until that changes, maybe he will be always stuck as the player who has no help and needs this super great player to help him win....

you do realize that you can remove carmelo, bring in lebron and add Pf that rebounds and score and be in much better position.. In other words since you are on this lebron dream, and that isn't going to happen, we should be looking to add lebron and someone like Aldridge. No more playing people out of position , a more balanced team and you fill a need..

I mean lets be real, lebron and any decent player makes a good team, and that player doesn't have to be a max player.... heck bring bosh on over with lebron, he seems to have found a nice role doing what he does now and he is pretty darn good at it.. and I am pretty sure his next deal will not be a max one..

nah, no better than bron and wade and what makes bron and wade such a great fit is they both are super on the break, creative passers and great defenders..

you guys really need to cut this ish out.. my lord... LOL

lebron does not need someone who takes 22 shots per game.. and carmelo just isn't efficient enough.. if you want to talk unstoppable offensively, lebron and rose makes sense.. rose will play off the ball and he is pretty much a force as is, rose would not have to worry about setting anyone up, but himself..... lebron and someone like Klay thompson would be interesting offensively as lebron loves to pass and klay is an assasin.. lebron and steph curry....

I mean really I wish there would just be more reasonable dialouge when it comes to this....
