BRIGGS wrote:One of them said. " 90 of white people are nasty. Hate them". If this was three white people who wrote and acted like this it would've been the racial incident of the decade. Other way around really haven't heard a peep. I think this is what is the basis of much of the racism we have in the country now. A reverse psychology. Whoever did what here. This is one of the worst race crimes in 20 years and I hope people from all races learn and continue to learn from this. This young man had serious hatred for whites at 16 What caused this?

The difference between these two cases are Zimmerman got away with no questions asked from the police until it became national. These kids were arrested right away. The outrage came from an unarmed kid being killed without ANY questions being asked to the person who killed him, this is not the case with this recent incident. All those involved with the killing in both these cases should go to jail. To equate these two cases is not looking at the details. Justice was played out correctly in one case and was not played out in the other case. The kids were immediately arrested as they should have been. Zimmerman on the other hand had his word taken as the complete truth without any investigation into his claims.

Upon examination of the facts and trial it turns out justice was served up in that case as well. This was despite some really weak evidence(prosecution even bypassed a grand jury) and a frenzied attempt by just about everyone to get the guy convicted.

There was no way to proof that Zimmerman wasn't trying to defend himself so you can't charge him with murder. That's really what it came down to, doesn't mean justice was really served since nobody knows what actually happened except Zimmerman and Martin.

IMO though if you are a 30+ yr old male armed with a gun you should hold some type of responsibility over the situation. Largely based off of Zimmerman's personal walk through of what happened. There are many things that just don't add up to me.

Nope. It's impossible it was second degree murder because there would have been no struggle. Trayvon Martin was on top of him and smashing Zimmermans's head into the pavement. That's what it came down to. These are what was deemd certain. It's arguable for manslaughter perhaps.

With all due respect this post illustrates people with biased thinking. There is no way for you to know that "Trayvon Martin was on top of him and smashing Zimmermans's head into the pavement." unless you take exactly what zimmerman said as the complete truth. If you are willing to take what he said as the complete truth then to you there is no way that the unarmed kid could be anything but in the wrong. He is dead so no way can you get his side of the story. This is the exact reason why the mafia kills witnesses and gansters kill snitches. Dead men tell no tales.

There are 42 MILLION Black people in this country. You honestly think we have a Sunday Brunch Club where we sit around talking about how much we hate white people? Why does the comments of a brain-dead TEENAGER have to do with the thinkings of 42 MILLION individuals?

Black people don't control the news or the amount of attention a news story gets. I personally talked about it at my job with another black co worker. We were both disgusted and felt they should all be tried as adults since it was said that only one of them was. Trying to insinuate that this story hasn't gotten much media attention because the ppl who committed the crime were black and hate whites is silly. You really think that media outlets are looking to protect black people's feelings?

Zimmerman issue was big because he was let go with no charges and because Martin's parents fought and fought for what they felt was right while there were ppl who felt Zimmerman was justified. The back and forth made it a big case.

It was more than the no charges. Even after the case was done there was still a huge buzz. People didn't just want him to goto trial they wanted him nailed. The media in this case was trying to sell a story. It seemed good in the begining. Unarmed black 'kid', gun wielding 'white' guy(especially in the context of the recent high profile shootings). Unfortunately, the kid was not really the little kid in the photos, he was a 6 foot 200+ man. But to keep the story going we only say his photos when he was 12 or 14. It was unfortunate that he was half hispanic..so we had the term 'white hispanic' given to keep it alive. Helping this along was a presidential adoption, special prosecutors hiding evidence, race hustlers all working to nail the guy and deliver the conclusion of the story the media was selling. So the media does not try to protect black peoples' feelings. But they do try to generate stories(instead of reporting what's out there)that they think will sell them the most viewership/subscriptions/sales.

Don't know why you felt the need to exaggerate Martin's size, he was 5'11 160pds. The story kept going because Zimmerman's side of the story was very leaky. Also lets not act like things didn't come out to attack Martin's character claiming he was a thug or putting the young black girl on stand to make them look bad while Zimmerman refuses to go on stand(Lawyers intelligently made sure that didn't happen).

He said on his way back to the car Martin popped up on him and stated do you have a problem? Zimmerman replied, no I don't have a problem and Martin stated well you have a problem now, then punched Zimmerman in the face. Now it may or may not have happened, but logically I don't buy it. Logically Martin isn't going to strike Zimmerman without asking if he was a cop first or who he was. Also why wouldn't Zimmerman state that he was the neighborhood watch and there was a lot of vandalism in the area etc.. Like how an adult would respond in that situation? Then he claimed that Martin was beating him up when someone opened there door and saw the fight. The man then stated he was calling the police. Zimmerman told the guy to help him while getting his face pounded. Now Martin knowing that someone saw the fight and is calling the police still stayed there to put a beat down on Zimmerman. Again logically not buying it. Then the gun was shown as Zimmerman's jacket was risen up during the scuffle. Zimmerman claims that Martin sees the gun and stated your going to die tonight mother f****. So Martin knowing that the police is coming, not wondering or caring if Zimmerman was a cop or anything after seeing the gun. With no beef with Zimmerman other then being followed, was out to kill him at all cost no matter what forcing Zimmerman to react in a kill or be killed circumstance.

No I don't think so(that statement by me was a poor example of trying to understand why this young man said he hated 90% of white people)-- this young man had learned hatred for whites at 16--enough to go out and just kill one for no other reason that hate it appears. I guess thats just scary as hell.

That I can definitely agree with. At the same time, that is one incident in a nation of 300 million. Cases like this are very isolated. The likelihood of an event like this happening to me or someone I know is pretty remote. It what makes these instances all the more outrageous.

Yeah, Zimmerman and that jury demonstrated the point well.

zimmermann and, presumably, martin were irrational.

the jurors, however, made a decision based on the law, and in their demonstration of making decisions based on the law they proved to be rational. the laws are at fault here.

which clearly doesn't mean that the verdict coincides with what is right or ethical-- and that's the damnable and lamentable thing of it all. obviously zimmermann should be doing a long stretch.

the verdict gives lawmakers and legislators the opportunity to change the laws so that such decisions cannot be forced to be made again.

I'm torn. At one point I thought that this was the case....then I heard Juror B37's interview, which made it a contested point in my mind. All the "them" and "their community" made me believe that her outrage was mitigated by the fact that Trayvon wasn't white. On the flip side, Casey Anthony murdered her kid and we have made virtually no progress toward gun background checks after several suburban White children were murdered. Evidently, stupidity and technicalities can trump race in the judicial system.

With no beef with Zimmerman other then being followed, was out to kill him at all cost no matter what forcing Zimmerman to react in a kill or be killed circumstance.

you assume people are rational-- they're not

What Zimmerman stated could have been 100% accurate. But there could also be major details left out that provide reasoning behind it.

The people who don't believe Zimmerman should be charged with murder because of lack of evidence I agree with and understand. The people that completely side with Zimmerman and say things like its so sad that Martin forced Zimmerman to have to kill him. I have to believe that you have an agenda.

This is not even touching on the parts that the police tested Martin for drugs while not testing Zimmerman and automatically assumed Zimmerman was justified. Or the fact that Zimmerman's father is well connected being an ex judge. Which could potentially make police, and other in the judicial system act more favorably towards Zimmerman then another regular Joe.

I think what plays a huge role in the existence of racism is ignorance. I know that is an obvious statement, but What I really mean is that the root of that ignorance about the other race is due to willful segregation. In NY I always notice the different communities that are completely different ethnically. In this specific drive I am remembering I passed Black,White,Russian and Jewish communities. It is this willful segregation where stereotypes and misconceptions about other races are born and cultivate.

I personally grew up in an all black neighborhood and did not see a decent amount of people that were not cops or teachers until I was into my teen years. I am sorry if what I am about to say sounds racist or stereotypical, but It is not and I am just stating the makeup of the area I lived in. All the Asians in my area owned beauty shops,Chinese food stores or nail salons, all the middle eastern people in my area owned the corner stores and the only white people I saw were cops and teachers.

I am not sure if my mother noticed this and purposely sent me away to summer camps to interact with people from different cultures. While I sometimes had conflicts during those camps due to cultural differences this is where I learned that everyone is the same no matter what race they are. However, I did have a big blowout with a white counselors due to cultural differences. Due to me living in a predominantly black area all my life I grew up using the N word that ended with an A a lot to my friends and we all knew hat it was out of love. However when I first got to this camp I was still a child and did not develop that filter to change how I talk to different groups of people. To make a long story short I called a councilor the N word a couple of times ending with an A without noticing it because we were cool. He did not like that and we constantly got into arguments no matter how many times I tried to explain myself. I almost got kicked out of camp for this.

I am sorry for this long post. I don't usually like posting long posts but I felt this one might help people understand things from my perspective. Maybe it won't help at all, but it still felt good to write it. Also, I am too lazy to proof read so sorry for the errors in advance!

Nobody really knows what happened and we can't start locking people up for assumptions even if they seem logical. Then you may end up locking up an innocent man without proper evidence. IMO he should have at least been ordered to do some type of community service with the goal of having him and the public learn from this issue and preventative measures so that things like this never happen again. Especially to people with gun licenses.

His father's connections if they did have any impact on the case. It would be with the lawyers who tried the case on both sides, the judge giving out the sentencing, and the initial police investigation. Potentially or I should say possibly at this point being the key word. Then there are people who were sponsoring him because they believe in the right to bare arms. And all they care about is protecting that right and not if he was guilty or innocent.

haha, the counselor took it too seriously,

which is kind of my point, that race is soooo serious in America, it's almost funny to watch,

when it really isn't that serious.

i think on a local level, when you're really out there and working and interacting with people in diverse environments, you'll find that race is definitely noticed, even explicitly acknowledged, and that that's where it ends--- the group moves on with its tasks and goals,

BRIGGS - please do some homework before you talk about the past 20 years

Despite the election of our nation's first African-American president, African Americans remain by far the most frequent victims of hate crimes. Of the 7,624 hate crime incidents reported nationwide in 2007, the most recent year for which data is available, 34 percent (2,659) were perpetrated against African Americans, a number and percentage of incidents that has changed little over the past 10 years. According to the FBI's HCSA report, more than twice as many hate crimes were reported against African Americans as against any other group.

From lynching, to burning crosses and churches, to murdering a man by chaining him to a truck and dragging him down a road for three miles, anti-black violence has been and still remains the prototypical hate crime, intended not only to injure and kill individuals but to terrorize an entire group of people.

Hate crimes against African Americans have an especially negative impact upon society for the history they recall and perpetuate, potentially intimidating not only African Americans, but other minority, ethnic, and religious groups.

Examples of recent hate crimes committed against African Americans include:

On Election Night 2008, Ralph Nicoletti and Michael Contreras, both 18, and Brian Carranza, 21, of Staten Island, New York decided shortly after learning of Barack Obama's election victory "to find African Americans to assault," according to a federal indictment and other court filings. The men then drove to a predominantly African-American neighborhood in Staten Island, where they came upon a 17 year-old African American who was walking home after watching the election at a friend's house. One of the defendants yelled "Obama!" Then, the men got out of the car and beat the youth with a metal pipe and a collapsible police baton, injuring his head and legs. The men went on to commit additional assaults that night.

Their hate crime spree culminated with crashing their car into a man who they mistakenly believed to be African-American, causing his body to shatter the windshield. While the victim ultimately survived the attack, he was in a coma for a period of time.26 Brian Carranza pleaded guilty to conspiring to assault Staten Island residents after the election of President Obama and faces 10 years in prison. Nicoletti and Contreras pleaded not guilty.

Justin Sigler, 19, of Natchitoches, Louisiana, pleaded guilty in December 2008 to conspiring with two other individuals to violate the civil rights of a man in Lena, Louisiana who was the first African American to move into a home in the neighborhood. Sigler and two others fired shotguns at a target on a field adjacent to the victim's property before one member of the group turned his shotgun away from the target and toward the victim and his house. The next evening, Sigler, dressed in a white robe as a member of the Ku Klux Klan, went with his coconspirators to a field adjacent to the victim's residence and shouted, "White Power!" and "White Knights!" Shaken by these events, the family eventually sold their home.

misterearl--this crime was one of the worst race crimes in the last 20 years. I don't understand what would prompt a young man to say that 90% of white people were nasty and hated them--then 2 weeks later picked out an unassuming man and shot him in the back for no reason. Does this mean this is the only race crime in the last 20 years--come on. Again your words not mine. I have personally seen only scant racism in my 44 years of life lving in Brooklyn Westport and Madison CT with a vacation home in Naples CT. The worst I have ever seen was in Florida--some verbal stuff from two men in a restaurant that made my stomach churn. Otherwise while growing up with my two best friends being AA going to hs and college with aa's working with african americans closely---I have not seen hatred coming from them or hatred going back at them with a couple of small HS exceptions.. All in all in 44 years its been a very small piece of anything I have seen--whether its a kid from Long Island who screams Obama and does something bad to an african americna kid or an afircan american kid who says he hates 90% of whites for no valid reason and kills one--i dont get it I havent seen it in my life and Its not necessary and sad.

This is one of the worst race crimes in 20 years and I hope people from all races learn and continue to learn from this. This young man had serious hatred for whites at 16 What caused this?

Not to worry. Jesse Jackson 'frowns upon' killing white folks it seems. And that is being generous. There was also a WWII vet killed outside a lodge by a couple of black teenagers, that noone will talk about either. There will be no marches, TV interviews or death threats. Racism only works one way in the press and with politicians. If you disagree you'll be labeled a racist. You've been warned.

First and foremost, Jesse Jackson is not the mouthpiece for all black Americans.

Second, it goes both ways, dont make it seem like there haven't been hundreds of white on black crimes that haven't been reporter thats been going on for decades. Just focus on the summer of 2013:

John Spooner, 77 year old white man killed an unarmed black kid named Darius Simmons. Where was the outcry for that?

Another unarmed black teen was killed by a white man because he was playing his music too loud. I wonder how many people on this board heard about this case?

12 year old boy selling lemonade was attacked in Fairfax county. A person threw a red balloon full of urine hitting the boy in the thigh. White people screamed from the window "Go back to Africa you **** monkey!"

Black woman got 20 years in prison for shooting over the head of her abusive husband. Judge said, "She should have ran." Really, why didn't the judge say the same thing to Zimmerman? Why didn't she get the stand your ground treatment, especially considering that she didn't shoot anyone?

In closing, there are horrific crimes all over this country, lets not make it out to be that no-one care only when its a black on white crime. Hundreds of white on black crimes are not only never reported, but even the ones that are high profile, we've seen cases where whites still seem to get off with less than a slap on the wrist.
