Except they don't have nearly the same window. I think they wind up closer to 2013 Lakers than 2011 Heat - I can appreciate the move of JKidd to headcoach as fan service and a decent move down the road, but this is NOT a roster you bring in a first year coach for.

of course it is. pierce and garnett are veteran leaders with championship pedigree. this is a very savvy win-win move for the nets.

Sure, they are guys that can try and cover on the floor for Kidd's inexperience, but if you've got a year to win a championship, you want to bring in a first time coach with absolutely zero experience as the guy to get you over the hump?

he led the nets to two finals appearances and was integral to a mavs title. he has basically been the coach on the floor while he had his legs. he's going to have lawrence frank at his side.

in baseball you get a lot of catchers who become managers and i imagine there are more point guards who become coaches than other positions. i think the three of them are going to be pretty tight insofar as they have the highest BBIQ. when the legs go it can be tough but passing can lengthen a career. in pierce and garnett you have guys with superior passing and playmaking skills. to me the real question is how well does joe johnson adapt for them. if he does then watch out.

knicks win 38-43 games in 16-17. rose MUST shoot no more than 14 shots per game, defer to kp6 + melo, and have a usage rate of less than 25%

smackeddog, do you want to know what's even worse? The article says:

Last season, New York was the better team based on record, thanks mostly to a blistering, unsustainable November and a white-hot, completely outside the realm of sustainability April. But the Knicks crashed to earth in a fiery mess in the playoffs. The Nets, meanwhile, had a good year, and had good momentum going into the playoffs, then came completely unhinged against the Bulls.

Knicks record in Nov: 11-4
Knicks record in April: 8-2

Nets record in Nov: 11-4
Nets record in April: 7-2

both teams had about the same loses in March.... and yet 2 completely different stories.

Ha ha! Never realised that- makes the article even more ridiculous!

I do think Kidd will make a great coach down the road (basketball coach...life coach, not so much) - but if it were that simple to transition from player to headcoach, you'd see more guys doing it, especially with how expendable coaches seem to have become in the league. There's a reason guys go around on the assistant circuit for a bit, absorbing what they can and developing their own style. I honestly believe most of the coaching influence will be coming from Frank this season, and I'm not blown away with him on the bench. Kidd and his staff could come out and be fantastic next season, but he's just too much of an unknown for me to gamble on with a 1 year window (2 years at absolute best).

I believe it was Tim Legler that brought up the concern that it could be difficult for him to be able to assert himself as headcoach when it's a roster full of guys who could still basically be teammates with.

It is what it is. I won't be rooting for him.

he is definitely less vociferous-- not necessarily less vocal-- than mark jackson. it worked out for jackson with a much younger crew to be more vocal so that was a great fit and great hire. i also think a precedent of sorts has been set in this modern nba with so many guys coming in who are so much younger.

by contrast i think with kidd and the nets, having less "separation" agewise works great for a very young coach with a veteran squad.

the coaching carousel is based on crony-ism not inherent value. i think the modern game is going to make a lot of these guys extinct and frankly it is overdue. flip saunders comes to mind.
