I don't think that's true at all. We're in a bit of a bind but we're not totally devoid of options. Adding a higher-priced NBA veteran-type might be too rich for our blood but there are still solid alternatives out there, if we're open to possibilities.
There's no question that we could replace the bulk (if not all) of Smith scoring and we could do it on the ultra cheap if we ever decided to go this route:
Jermaine Taylor
Chris Douglas-Roberts
Andre Emmett
If we're looking for a cheap scoring 2, these 3 all fit the bill. All 3 of these swingmen can score the basketball -- anyone of these guys would make for a good 2G duo to go along with Shumpert. Not household names but there's real value here with some of these guys. And if you don't like these 3, I can give you countless other solid players we could pencil in at 2G for JR Smith (Scotty Hopson, Dominique Jones, Derrick Byars, Austin Freeman -- the list goes on a mile long) and be no worse for the ware. And then there's always the draft for a 2G if we so incline: Erick Green, Allen Crabbe, Glen Rice Jr., Reggie Bullock, Tim Hardaway Jr. -- I gotta believe at least one of these guys will be there at 24.
I dunno, some will disagree but to me --- Jermaine Taylor (scoring) + Jamelle Horne (athleticism/versatility/additional 2/3 depth, shooting, scoring) > JR Smith. Just my humble opinion..And we could add those 2 for peanuts, pennies on the dollar. Millions less than Smith's asking price....You put those 2 together with Iman Shumpert and I think we're fine at 2G for next year....I think we'd be better off going the cost-effective route -- JR Smith at $5M+ per is a joke, man. Complete waste of time. I only have to look at those pics above and then think back to his playoff performances the last 2 seasons running for the proof. SMH. :(
