Woodson would probably love to play him more if he wasn't such a liability on defense. But, how can he be considered the most efficient when he averages 5 shots a game? I'm sure other guys would be more efficient if they only shot wide open shots.
That's a reasonable question. The short answer is that despite numerous efforts over many years, no one has ever established that efficiency goes up as shot attempts go down. They are actually several lines of evidence against the theory. You can find a lot of them in the Wages of Wins journal (and Berri's books). Novak's defense is below average but his net production (strength on offense minus weaknesses on defense) is still excellent.
Are we looking at this years stats? How is Tyson not considered more efficient? And, Novak scored 2 baskets or less in 40 out of the 81 games he played. I'm willing to bet his defense hurt us more than he comtributed in at least those games.
I like Novak and his willingness to get better in other areas of his game. But, as of now, he's not capable in the playoffs.
I was talking about this year but not counting Tyson since he doesn't seem right - at least not yet. If a guy has a short leash and lots of games where he plays only about 10 min, of course he's going to have several games of only 2 baskets or less.
