Some don't understand basketball. If you're playing too many players out of positions and they only have certain skillsets then yes you'd have to play a certain way.
Our style of play is to look for the 3 ball primarily.... while allowing Melo to hold the joystick most of the time. W. Chandler/Melo/Amar'e/Novak overlap the 3/4 positions with not enough minutes to dole out.
which leads me to believe that everytime I hear people say carmelo needs help.. maybe his style of play..(holding the joystick) just isn't conducive to the point where it allows more talented players to actually play a role that can help the team..
I do think Melo has changed from that "joystick" mentality (at least in part). The Olympic team really affected him in a good way. He heard the same "can't play as a team" stuff here and it caused him to further change. Now, he still handles the ball and wastes time dribbling but he is getting more and more away from it.
He is just such a great talent and the smarter he players and his upside goes just so high - unfortunately he had been living on offensive talent alone for so long. This year his defense is much better, albeit not consistent (as is our team).
I think we need a shooter who can create his own shot and has IQ, unlike JR. Yeah, I'm going to mention Lin again here, they could have been something special together.
I wouldn't mind Reddick, but his defense isn't great. I sort of am hoping Shump comes back and then I think we'll be a bit better off but we still need a smart offensive threat out there that can play defense and JR is as close as we are gonna come I'm afraid.
Oddly enough, I think Melo's biggest problems arise when he doesn't have enough talent around him. He is learning to play more in a team environment, but we just don't have everyone healthy (which man of us complained about as being possible when we brought on the old folks).
