now the reason i would put durant in front of lebron is preference. to be honest, you could easily interchange the two. however, durant's skill set and ability to take over games with a killer instinct is what put him over imo. lebron obviously has done so also but he just got it in gear last year. he still defers when he shouldnt. durant is in beast mode ALL the time and the only time he isnt is if westbrook hogs the ball.

So, I decided to aggregate the lists posted to come up with the consensus top players in the NBA. I assigned point values for each position (1=10 pts, 2-9 pts, etc.), added them up, and sorted them. Overall there were 19 players picked in 10 lists with a 3-way tie for 13 and a 2-way tie for 16. I decided the ties by counting the number of lists they appeared on. Here are the overall results:

1. Lebron James-98 points
2. Kevin Durant-92 points
3. Chris Paul-69 points
4. Kobe Bryant-64.5 points
5. Carmelo Anthony-62.5 points
6. Dwight Howard-25 points
7. James Harden-21 points
8. Derrick Rose-17 points
9. Russell Westbrook-16 points
10. Rajon Rondo-15 points
11. Tim Duncan-13 points
12. Kevin Love-10 points
13. Dwayne Wade-7 points; appeared on 4 lists at 9, 9, 9, and 10
14. Blake Griffin-7 points; appeared on 3 lists at 8, 8, and 10
15. Tony Parker-7 points; appeared on 2 lists at 7 and 8
16. Deron Williams-6 points; appeared on 3 lists at 8, 9, and 10
17. Marc Gasol-6 points; appeared on 1 list at 5
18. Zach Randolph-3 points
19. Paul Pierce-1 point

Unsurprisingly, Lebron was the consensus best player in the league; of the 10 lists posted he was ranked 1st in 8 of them and 2nd in the other two. Kevin Durant receive the opposite votes; ranked 1st twice and 2nd 8 times. I'm not surprised that Chris Paul is 3rd overall but I am surprised he didn't end up with more points and that no one ranked him better than 3rd on their list. Of the top 5 players, Carmelo Anthony is the only one that didn't appear on every list.

Good work. That's a big drop-off after the top 2 and again after the top 5.

Falls right in line with what many of us were saying. It's Lebron & Durant and then everyone else

They are hot right now just like Melo and the Knicks were a few weeks ago. We'll see if they can sustain it. Not sold on the Clippers in the playoffs where the game slows down and Blake gets exposed again. Still think OKC is better

OKC got exposed against Miami too. And, they lost a top 5 player in the league.

The clippers added Odom who is playing great and has been playoff tested and barnes was a steal.

I am not a Blake Griffin fan but I think they can overcome him this year.

Crawford can make big shots too.

When Dwight's fully healthy he'll be no worse than 4th but until then he's out. Dirk would probably be around 7th or 8th if he were healthy. Derrick Rose would be no worse than 5th.

No james harden... I would put him in over marc gasol...

Actually, I bumped Kevin Love since he's played pretty badly this season and added James Harden. I'll go back and edit my post.

other than OKC no team has been this hot, not even the knicks.. 3g and I had a discussion about the clippers before, I liked what they were doing but he was completely sold on them, and he was right, that team has a good mix of youth and vets, and a load of talent.. I think they could be a finals team.. I know it is a bit early, but they are beating good teams with ease.. EASE... for the money we spent, and assets we gave up, this is the kind of team I wanted... but whatever....

The clippers look scary good... and honestly they don't even look like they are stepping on the gas yet....

I am not the biggest fan of his game at all, I don't hate it, but not as nuts about it like some are... but I like him as a person and kid.. He is a good guy, with a great attitude, I can root for that.. with that said, he is productive.. He will rebound(like we wish amare did) and he can finish better than anyone in the league... He is a perfect fit with cp3 and that team....

In my mind, there isn't a better team in the NBA than the Clippers right now. They have the best record in the league, a 15 game win streak, their average margin of victory is 10.3 points, and, according to basketball-reference.com's metrics, they're the 4th best offense and 2nd best defense in the league. Them and the Spurs have looked like the 2 best teams in the league with OKC not far behind at all.

Rondo to me is far better than Westbrook and should certainly be on that list.

Yeah, that's pretty surprising especially with some of the injuries that other players have suffered this season.

the lists become bull**** once you begin to see how many people left out Carmelo and/or Rondo.

Here is an interesting note on how well Melo is playing this year.

Right now Melo is averaging 28.5 p/36, 6.1 reb/36, with a TS of 59.2% and a TOV% of 9.7. So he is scoring at an unbelievable rate in a very efficient way, chipping in on the boards, and essentially never turning the ball over. Do you know how many players have reached the threshold of 28+ p/36, 6 reb/36, TS >59, and TOV%<10?

I decided the ties by counting the number of lists they appeared on. Here are the overall results:

1. Lebron James-98 points
2. Kevin Durant-92 points
3. Chris Paul-69 points
4. Kobe Bryant-64.5 points
5. Carmelo Anthony-62.5 points
6. Dwight Howard-25 points

Of the top 5 players, Carmelo Anthony is the only one that didn't appear on every list.

wow! looks like it took some time to do but i do love the breakdown.
