First he said he was at 85% in the playoffs, now he clarifies he meant 85% of the absolute minimum needed to play.

On hearing news that the Knicks weren't matching, he says in an interview by his college friend, that he "honestly" preferred New York. Then at the Rockets press conference he clarifies that he meant he preferred New York, only before any other suitors had made themselves known (Ha ha!) and that he actually preferred both the Rockets and Knicks equally!

He says he isn't interested in money, has enough and has very few endorsements because he isn't interested in money, yet negotiates a big poison pill contract and hires a new shark agent who specializes in endorsements.

Now he can't make up his mind whether he really expected the Knicks to match anything and was shocked that they didn't, or whether he knew all along that they wouldn't and that's why he renegotiated the Rockets offer.

So we didn't plan on matching Lin all along? So why did we let him sit out the playoffs to protect his long term interests? Why did we let him work out with our assistant coach during the whole off season process? Why did Woody invite him for dinner? Oh but that's not enough for Lin- he really needs to feel wanted and expected a phone call at 12.01 sharp! News flash- teams don't phone their restricted free agents at 12.01, because they have the power to match anything- they instead focus on unrestricted free agents because they need to impress them more.

He claims that he would have accepted less to play for the Knicks (we could only offer him about half of what other teams could), yet mysteriously renegotiates his Rockets deal to the highest possible amount. Really, are we suppose to think if we phoned him at 12.01 and said "here's $24 mil over 4 years" his new shark agent would have said- "sure! I'm not even going to bother trying to get the $40mil that other teams could offer him!".

I liked Lin and think its a big mistake we let him go for nothing, but I find these media spin games and lies by his people irritating, just like I find Dolan's decision that he doesn't need to explain or say anything about this matter to fans amazingly arrogant.

Excellent post....

We can talk all day long and this will prove nothing.
Let's get back to it in January to see how Lin did and how Knicks did.
I am sure it will be a lot to talk about.

Wow, there are some angry long time posters; got your panties in a bunch over a 23 year old kid? Classy.

We're spending $200 mil on Amare/Melo and you're surprised that people are angry that we can spend $25 mil on Lin?

The board is overrun by N00bs and trolls who think they can tell us how to feel. It's actually pretty funny when you think about it.

haha... just the band wagoners getting their trolls in before they fade away

What Lin Really Meant To Say (Guarantee: all dialogue reported verbatim)

What Lin Said
"I didn't go back to them and ask for more money"

What Lin Really Meant
"Once Roger Montgomery got a taste of that fancy-schmancy office he thought he was Jerry Maguire"

What Lin Said
"It wasn't like they gave me the choice to sign one of the two and I chose the one that would hurt the Knicks. I had one contract offer. That was it."

What Lin Really Meant
That one contract offer was an insult to my worldwide sex appeal.

What Lin Said
“it did kind of hurt.”

What Lin Really Meant
“Playing the Heat, or any highly motivated NBA team, is no joke.”

What Lin Said
"It's not about who's right or who's wrong. I'm going to respond with love. That's why I'm in this position, to show love and become a better person. I'm trying to focus on the right things. I'm thankful for everything that's happened. The Lord has blessed me so much."

What Lin Really Meant
My guys f#cked up, no doubt about it. But hey, I got paid. Lawd ha' mercy I got paid!"

Downside

As for the upside, forcing the Knicks to even consider ending his tenure in New York is the truest definition of Linsanity. If Lin is even 80% as good as he showed in flashes last season, fronting a very good, very hyped Knicks team had the potential to bring him tens of millions in endorsements. But as Steve Herz, who cuts celebrity endorsement deals as president of IF Management previously told my colleague Tom Van Riper: “Lin leading the Charlotte Bobcats back to respectability wouldn’t be that interesting. It’s not something that Coca-Cola is going to play $10 million for.”

Insert “Houston Rockets” into that sentence, and you get Lin’s new reality. Rather than the golden boy on an obsessed-over team in the world’s media capital, he’s now an above-average player on a below-average team in a low-profile city.

People didn’t fall in love with Lin because he was a star player. They loved him because he’s an underdog, he was humble and he won. The choice he just made, amid the circus he helped create, undermines all of those attributes.

Last night, as I watched SportsCenter, the anchors declared these developments as the formal “end of Linsanity.” But it’s more accurate to say that Jeremy Lin sold it for a $5 million note three years from now – a monumentally foolish price for a brand that could have been golden.
