Nobody Gets Back On Defense Like The Answer Man

yellowboy90 wrote:Q. Did (Woodson) not pull out all his defensive tricks so that he could get the job?

A. Mike is not a politician. He is a basketball coach.

yellowboy90 wrote:Q. Did Mike pull a Jason Garret?

A. Hardly. He re-familiarized himself with the new configuration at the renovated Garden. He took careful notes on players and made certain not to get too chummy with any of them. He probably noticed there were a lot of coaches on the sidelines. He took what he learned in Atlanta and applied it to New York. He kept quiet.

He pulled a Mike Woodson.

I hope he does hold them accountable and the most effective players play. That is the way it should always be.

Hey who knows, maybe he can be the Knicks version of Joe Torre. The right guy at the right time taking over a team that is already built. I hope so.

This will be interesting. Woodson has nothing to lose. He loses, he can always blame the Melo-D'Antoni dysnfunction.

Meanwhile, he knows Jax is now hanging out at the 8th Avenue subway station, and Sloan just bought a Lonely Planet guidebook to NY.

And Knicks management is stuck with him for the remainder of the season and the off-season.

one thing about this thread... Woodson has nothing to lose? NBA coaching jobs dont come easy, especially for middle of the road types like Woodson. I would say from a career standpoint he's got tremendous pressure to make this opportunity work

I like what Woodson brings to the table. He has experience. Wouldn't necessarily call it successful, but not a failure either. I think he's probably learned from that and gained exposure to a completely different style of coaching.

Never too early to hope tha tthis turns out like Nelson/JVG. Nellie wants to feature Mason and play up tempo. Ewing doesn't like it. Nellie is dismissed and defensive guy gets elevated. Everything clicks and all is well in the world. Hopefully this is a parallel

Wow, I never saw that parallel, that's deep.

Woodson has to spend extra time to get it ingrained in him that he must concentrate on D and the boards. The points will come. If he doesn't fix it then he won't play in close games down the stretch if Woodson is true to his word.

+1

I get the feeling that Stat just might find an extra gear for the rest of the season on defense, maybe even on offense as well. If Amar'e starts regularly draining jumpers like he used to I'm pretty sure that the rest of his game will follow. He might be not as explosive as he once was but I do think that he won't look as lost as he has been. I think it comes down to not treating your stars like Melo and Stat like role players. They have to get theirs for this team to contend and to keep their heads in the game. Right or wrong.

we pulverized the portland failblazers. the real test will be the pacers. tonight we hit our 3s but that's not going to happen every night. melo was on his best behavior — let's see how long it lasts.

I think Woodson will have a good chance to succeed because his strength is really on D and this team has a lot of defensive capability that went away during the losing, but we know it's there. If they really commit to max effort there's no reason this team can't succeed. I believe Woodson when he says he'll hold players accountable. He's gonna need to cuz we have some guys that will backslide to laziness if you let them.

When you have offensively talented players like Melo and Stat (who generally haven't played much defense) now being coached by someone who focuses on defense, expect good things. Defense first and good things will follow. The team knows offense from Mike, now they get to mix the best of that, with some play calling (!) and tight D. We saw some of that D last night and as I watched it, the simplicity of it (trapping in the backcourt, not switching so much, etc.) I thought - "There is no excuse to not have coached like this sooner."

I liked Mike's system and Mike as a person, but he did have weak spots and flaws in his coaching. I think we will see much of that remedied. Notice the quick timeouts! We all missed that. Notice the nice subs, that keeps continuity flowing. Well, we'll see how all this works against some much tougher teams here soon. (But we were turning things around under D'Antoni lately anyway, so I expect a bit of a synergistic effect now.

My hope is that they continue to ablib but practice sets for when the game slows to a half court pace. that was my biggest thing with Pringles... you need to practice stuff like that all year so you can use it when you need it without thinking about it. like in June, when the game really slows down

RoyBatty - exactly.

Woodson will waste no time in putting his imprint on this roster of veterans. First thing he should do is strip Carmelo and Amar'e of the artificial Captain titles. Tyson Chandler is The Captain. He is the indispensable man in the middle. The anchor of the defense and keeper of the playing personality flame.

Defense baby.

Pressure Is Manufactured

To take over a team mid-season - in a compressed lockout season - changes everything. Woodson understands the opportunity completely. He has Knicks pedigree and understands the politic of 2 Penn PLaza. He faced down the press honestly band directly. His post game interview lends a clue towards how he will deal with the roster behind closed doors.

Whatever expectations are inherited and artificial. The season restarts tomorrow. There is NO pressure. Only performance.

Woodson will not allow bullsh#t or half-hearted effort. It's a Bobby Knight thing.

I have no problem with that.
