I think Woodson will have a good chance to succeed because his strength is really on D and this team has a lot of defensive capability that went away during the losing, but we know it's there. If they really commit to max effort there's no reason this team can't succeed. I believe Woodson when he says he'll hold players accountable. He's gonna need to cuz we have some guys that will backslide to laziness if you let them.
When you have offensively talented players like Melo and Stat (who generally haven't played much defense) now being coached by someone who focuses on defense, expect good things. Defense first and good things will follow. The team knows offense from Mike, now they get to mix the best of that, with some play calling (!) and tight D. We saw some of that D last night and as I watched it, the simplicity of it (trapping in the backcourt, not switching so much, etc.) I thought - "There is no excuse to not have coached like this sooner."
I liked Mike's system and Mike as a person, but he did have weak spots and flaws in his coaching. I think we will see much of that remedied. Notice the quick timeouts! We all missed that. Notice the nice subs, that keeps continuity flowing. Well, we'll see how all this works against some much tougher teams here soon. (But we were turning things around under D'Antoni lately anyway, so I expect a bit of a synergistic effect now.
