Melo when he is on is dangerous as a SF or PF. He can post up and pass out of the post or score in the post, he can face up and shoot over smaller guys or drive on bigger guys. He has quick feet to tip back missed attempts, he can stretch the floor, can guard 3s or 4s for stretches.

He doesn't have to play PF to play like a PF. He can play SF and still make a killing in the post and act like a PF, you would have to have the PF be versatile enough to play the role of a SF to create space for him though which is why Novak comes in handy.

With him as a PF, I like that
A) he's much quicker than the man guarding him,
B) he's down low on defense and grabbing a lot of boards, and
C) he gets the ball deeper in the post on offense.

You could give him the ball deep in the post even if he is an SF (point C above) but then our PF will have to be able to make perimeter shots.

Ersan Ilyasova would be perfect next to Carmelo Anthoney

Now we know why PHX couldn't wait to get rid of Amare. Its one thing if he was an injury risk but gave it his all on both ends of the floor but the fact that he is such a liability on defense is a big reason why PHX moved on and felt he wasn't worth 5yrs $100mil.

Melo's played very few min at PF. So you probably shouldn't make a big deal out of the stats but at least take a peak at his PERs at SF and PF in the link below. (Scroll down to the bottom.)

And it was a similar pattern last year

Damn I like the idea of starting

pg-Lin
sg-Shump
sf-Novak
pf-Melo
C-Tyson

lethal shooting and better D!

That's the exact lineup I was thinking about too.

doubt Woodson and the rest of the coaches see that tho. They'll just keep trotting out Fields at SF who runs and shoots like a girl, sorry girls

I'm also astonished by how good Carmelo can be on defense when he wants to be. That gives me both optimism and frustration with him, though.

Exactly how I feel about his D.

So you would actually start Novak? Even when STAT is healthy? I don't think that would ever happen. While he is injured it would be worth trying for sure. I would like to see whether Novak can deal with starter type minutes or not.

TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

We're going to get an extended look at Melo at PF for the rest of the season. I'd have to see what happens before answering that. Most likely though I would start Stat at PF and Melo at SF. However, Amare would get all the backup C minutes (maybe 17 a game) and I'd want Melo on the floor at PF during those minutes. Melo has to then have to mindset of attacking the basket though. Melo looked great around the rim last night and played great defense. He still took quite a few bad jumpshots that happened to go in though.

on 2nd thought I don't see Novak being as effective with the starters. When he comes in the game off the bench he is the main focus on offense. I dont know maybe it can work. Mop deep would be depleted tho. JR is inconsistent

To me, it's not an issue of whether Novak is best suited for a starter role but rather whether he's better than our other options. Smith's shot selection is awful and I think Novak's playing better than Fields.

yea I agree. A lot of times Novak is ineffective cos JR is busy hoisting up shots early in the shot clock like last night

While I think Melo will make a good PF he just does not have the technique to be a grood enough rebounder at the 4. Can he be taught yes because it just a matter of a lack of effort. He grabs instead of boxing out against most bigs. That is really his only flaw. Although he lacks height ever since he came back from injury(before Woody) he has been technically sound when guarding bigger players in the post most of the times. He is the best at keeping his hands up and has really quick hands. If he can guard Dirk he can guard Bosh. The only eastern conference PF that he might struggle with is Lopez/Humpries(someone physical). However all that being said when healthy he is one of the best small forwards in the game and if he was matched up against Joe Johnson he would have shut Joe down and would have made him work on both ends but I doubt ATL would have matched Joe on Melo due to size. Joe basically did to Fields what Melo does when healthy.

This year I am fine with him at PF until STAT comes back but we could have used STAT on Smith to slide Melo on Joe.

Sidenote: Hickson would have been a good pickup.

Shump should've been on Joe all game not Fields. Shump shut him down every time he guarded him. Spero & Clyde made sure to point that out every time

Forget undersized. I'd like to see him model his game after Charles Barkely. He doesn't quite have Sir Charles' athleticism but he could make good progress on that if he's motivated in the off-season. Right now it seems like 60% of the time he has a Charles Barkley mindset and then 40% of the time he thinks he's Ray Allen.

Melo is solid at PF, but it is based on who is at the SF. Having a big SF who can stretch the defense really balances the team out and makes Melo at PF make a ton of sense.

Well I'd like him to have a PF mentality (closer to Charles) and ditch the Ray Allen mentality even if he plays SF.
