He is part of the problem. We dont need him to be a offensive juggernaut but a hook shot or some semblance of a post game would help out alot. He wouldnt clog up the paint and his man wouldnt constantly cheat off of him.

This is why Marc Gasol is superior to Tyson. He is a well rounded center who can defend, rebound, shoot, AND post.

Both centers signed at the end of 2011 for $58 million in 4 years. So they were evenly valued by their respective teams. Yes Gasol is a better passer and has a greater variety of shots. But Tyson is presently scoring only 1 point less than Gasol.

On the other side Tyson's has a few dramatic advantages. He shots a much higher percentage .707 vs .496 so he needs 9 shots to score 12 points a game, and Gasol needs 13 shots to score 13 points. Second, I believe Tyson plays better defense than Gasol, and because he is highly vocal, he has helped the Knicks defense play better. Finally, I think Tyson Chandler is a magnificent team mate, who everyone seems to like. By talking to his team mates and helping them learn to play more efficiently, he has made an extremely valuable contribution to the Knick's playoff chances.

If there is one Knick who is part of the solution, and not part of the problem, it is Tyson Chandler. Hope you can change your mind.

Marc Gasol is averaging 3 points more than Chandler while providing offense and defense.

Marc Gasol's versatility allows him to play next to Zach Randolph because he can step out and make a shot. Him stepping out allows Randolph to post down low and opens up the middle. If Chandler played next to Randolph he'd turn Randolph into a jump shooter. This is partly why the Eddy Curry front court failed.

Having a big who can make a few shots also draws the opposing teams big away from the rim which allows for penetration by the guards.

Out of all the years I've been here.. this has to be one of the most mind-boggling threads I've read. TYSON is not the problem.. and so what he gets fouls and techs.. those are all apart of the game. He's no punk and I'd rather have him the way he is than some washed up Layden-era center!! But it's ur opinion so I won't knock u for it.. just can't see ur rational at this moment. Maybe if the tech happens during the closing minutes of a deciding game 6 or 7 in the playoffs.. then i may agree! I promise u he wouldn't foul so much if AMare was quick enough to help out on defense.

This is part of the reason Amare is coming off of screens like a 2g, when Amare played the 5, he had gallo or chandler playing the 4, that spreads the offense, cause those guys can't shoot 3's from the corners..Tyson chandler plays the paint, haardly ever pulls his man out of the paint and amare is always getting bottled up, and forcing things..

Tyson is great in a lot of other areas, but him and Amare should not play big mins together

I believe that if you are avoided at a forum, that is likely the result of what you have previously written. I have erred in the past, and currently it appears that almost all of my posts end up being ignored. The other posters' silence makes your recent kind words even sweeter, delicious actually. Thanks.

http://www.hoopsworld.com/lost-in-linsanity-knicks-improved-defense

"Coming into the 2011-2012 campaign, the Knicks had allowed over 110 points per 100 possessions in each of their previous four seasons, including all three under D’Antoni. This season, New York is allowing just 99.5 points per 100 possessions, which ranks sixth-best in the entire league. This is the first time New York has allowed under 100 per 100 possessions since… yes, 2001.

New York is currently holding its opponents to 93.9 points per game on 44.5% shooting after allowing 105.7 points on 47.2% shooting last season. This type of terrific turnaround is rarely seen in the NBA from one year to the next.

In early January, the Knicks actually held three straight opponents under 90 points. Prior to that stretch, the last time New York had held even two straight opponents under 90 points was all the way back in December of 2005. In fact, during that streak, the Knicks kept those teams under 88 points. As a point of comparison, in NY’s three previous seasons with D’Antoni at the helm, they held an opponent under 88 a TOTAL of nine times. That’s three games in a row, versus nine times total over the span of three complete seasons (246 games).

As these numbers illustrate, New York’s team defense hasn’t just been adequate, it’s been very good. And by just reading the headlines you might not know it, but there have actually been other players sharing the court with Jeremy Lin. The most important of these players has been big man Tyson Chandler."

Is there any way that the Knicks move from allowing 105.7 points last year to 93.9 points this year without Tyson Chandler? I think not!

Gasol is scoring 3 more points but he's taking almost 6 more shots a game. That's bad.

Marc is better on offense and Tyson is better on defense. They are comparable players.

Tyson has insane efficiency, but it would drop substantially if he were forced to do more than finish on pnrs right under the basket and collect garbage points. You can do a hell of a lot more with Marc offensively. He can score really well in the low post, and with his passing, he is able to facilitate an offense. He can pick-and-roll and pick-and-pop. His midrange jumpshot is wet.

The big doesn't have to be able to shoot for there to be good spacing. Tyson doesn't stay in the paint. He moves and most of the time comes out to set picks. Therefore as the set evolves there are openings for STAT and others to attack the basket if they move. Many times it's Fields who makes a back cut to the hoop for an alleyoop or layup. STAT has the elbow jumper or he can fake and drive off that Tyson/Lin PnR.

Tyson is the most efficient Knick player. He does ONLY stuff that he does great.
You have 5 players doing just this and you have a dynasty.
Efficiency is the main thing for success in any sport and any business for that matter.
The problem with Melo is that he is NOT efficient.
The problem with a lot of role players we have that they try or forced to do things they are not good at.
Fields and Lin are efficient players so is Novak. Stat can be that if he is 100% physically and emotionally.
We need Melo to stop hugging and volume shooting.
And we should not play Walker, Douglas, and JR alike for very same reason. At lease play them as less as possible.

The crazy thing with Melo is that he rarely takes the easy high % shot. He seems to always go for the high degree of difficulty shot. Now Melo is so talented that he can make those shots, but he'd be unbelievable if he just took the best and easiest shot instead of the highlight reel shot.

The differences are dramatic. Tyson adds so much to the team when he is on the floor. Its hard to watch when he is in foul trouble and off the court because the team is much more vulnerable on the defensive end. Shump has been a beast as well.

You are entirely correct. If his shots consisted of nothing but open jumpers and drives to the basket, he'd be much more effective. I'd much rather see him average 18 PPG on 13 shots, 6 rbs, 5 assists. It looks to me like he thinks contested jump-shots are smart shots though and I don't see any indication that the coach or anyone else is trying to get him to stop taking them.

"Melo rarely takes the easy high % shot. He seems to always go for the high degree of difficulty shot."

Watching Landry playing tight defense on Kobe. Kobe wound up just off the baseline about 20 feet away. He had to shoot at the basket from an angle because he was so close to the baseline. How did Kobe let himself get to that spot, if he didn't want to be there? It was almost as if he playing an imaginary game of horse with the other 9 players on the floor. Can anyone here make this shot was asked as the ball swished through the net?

Now that I think about it, it does seem Melo likes showing the spectators he can hit some difficult shots as well. Good point.
