When Mike took the gig it signalled a the beginning of a turnaround for the franchise. Sure Donnie had a huge role in that as well, but Mike had imput in the drafts and recruiting. Do you think players like Melo and Amare come here if we don't have a coach like MDA? I don't think so.

The real turn around came when Amare signed, and I guarantee you MDA had an impact on that. They supposedly had some rough moments in PHX so he must have spoken with Amare and cleared the air. That move paved the way for Melo and ultimately to the roster we have today.

Can you give all the credit to MDA? No, but he definitely helped bring in some of the talent we have, even Melo has said how he wanted to play for him after working with MDA during the olympics.

During his time here the team has improved every season, has had several total roster overhauls, and even made the playoffs. These things take time and the team has made strides every season. I think the ECF is a bit much to put on this team. Are they capable? Sure. But I think getting to the playoffs and out of the first round is enough to prove MDA deserves an extension.

He deserves a lot more credit than he gets.

its funny... everyone says he doesnt care about defense, but Tyson Chandler called MDA and his experience with him on the Olympic team a big factor in him coming here. Baron Davis said MDA and his offense was a big factor in him coming here. Part of my desire to see him succeed stems simply from seeing so many people who want him to fail. He's a good coach and a breath of fresh air when you look at what we had to watch the last decade

I totally agree - and the fans should want to see him succeed, because it's good for the franchise.

Well said. He does about defense but you need to have players who are capable of playing good defense. Look at his PHX teams, who was the top notch defender on that team. I think Chandler manning the middle is going to show up big time. Watching the game last night MSG cut to a practice where STAT was talking to Tyson and Tyson was like "No, when I start back peddling do not leave your man and rotate over." or something to that effect.

We endured several bad seasons just to clear cap space, which we've now fully used. We are also in the weaker conference. Fans should be expecting (or demanding) that we win more than one playoff series.

I can't believe I'm actually potentially arguing against MDA being a failure in the future. The thing is losing to the Bulls or Heat in a COMPETITIVE series is possible even if the team is being well coached. If they get smoked I would agree it would be a failure. The second year together for this team would be the one we should expect to knock off one of these two teams.

I think the millions of dollars had a far bigger effect than MDA did. In fact if they had some rough times, I would say Stat came despite MDA. Melo cam because Stat was here and he was tired of being in Denver. Would the have come without MDA? - absolutley yes. The fact that Melo wasn't willing to endorse MDA last season shows how much he cared that MDA was the coach.

You think those guys are coming here with Isiah, Wilkins, or Chaney as head coach? I think you are not giving MDA enough credit. This franchise was garbage when he signed here and the entire league knew it. To say he has not had an impact on recruiting and cleaning up the garbage is insane.

Isiah or CHaney no...but they shouldn't be coaching a high school team even. Wilkens yes. SO if your competition is your high school coach MDA is really good. MDA did not have an impact or at least a positive one in recruiting. What's insane is claiming he 'cleaned up the garbage'. Basically giving him credit for what was the solely the GMs work.

I want some of what you are smoking because I just don't see it. Nobody is giving MDA all the credit but he deserves his due. And no, I do not see Amare signing here with Wilkins as the coach. You didn't see players want to sign here under him or any of the others I mentioned, not even when Larry Brown was here.

Stat could have gone other places and gotten a pay day - would it have been as big? Probably not, but having MDA here did not hurt. By your logic stars would be lining up for the Nets but the only player they have is Williams. They have deep pockets to max players out. You think thats solely on the GM there?

MDA played a big part in making NYK a place people want to come play - Amare helped and Donnie was huge, but you cannot tell me that all MDA did was hurt our chances.

Uhh..no dude. You just said Stat and MDA had a spat. So that was a negative. You don't turn that into a positive on the phone. We never could get FA before because we were perpetually in salary cap hell. If we had cap room and Wilkens, who actually has a better coaching record with the Knicks than MDA(overall they are similiar in winning percentage) we defeintly could have still acquired Stat. That salary cap hell Walsh, not MDA got us out of. The Nets blow and play in the swamp state 'nuff said'. I don't smoke, thank you.

I don't see why there is so much love for D'Antoni. His 09-10 season should have gotten him fired. The combination of his horrific record, not playing rookies and forcing Walsh to give up too much in the McGrady trade should have gotten him fired. The claim that he is why guys came here is far from accurate in my opinion. The offseason that guys were supposed to come here was 2010. D'Antoni's presence brought no one. The only star to come was Amare who had to have a reconciliation meeting with D'Antoni because there was bad blood between them from their time in Phoenix. No one comes to NY without Amare here as a free agent. Adding Carmelo made the team much more enticing. The ATM Trio and the chance to play in NY sealed the deal for Davis. D'Antoni's style can inflate players numbers. D'Antoni's apparent laid back demeanor hides an extremely rigid coach but that might not be present when he is working as an assistant. However, none of the big names are in NY if Amare doesn't reconcile with D'Antoni.

You don't get D'Antoni, cuz you don't seem to understand BB! There's a reason why Mike Krzyzewski leaned on D'Antoni for help with the Olympic team and for the offense for his Duke Blue Devils. Unlike you other COACHES actually respect D'Antoni. Dude came up with his own offensive system that other coaches recognize as special! Even Phil Jax didn't come up with the triangle offense. So clearly you don't know what you're talking about. Even Greg Popovich decided to use some of what D'Antoni does with his team.

D'Antoni's style doesn't inflate players numbers, they actually play more efficiently! Go and look at the shooting percentages for players when they play for him verses before and you'll see improvement. Go look up Nash's numbers and you'll see that there was an improvement in efficiency after MDA. Look at how Felton played under D'Antoni verses before.
You can't ignore all the real positives and only deal with the negatives. No coach is perfect and they all need great players to win.

I have three questions for you. Why hasn't D'Antoni been extended? Why did Walsh travel with the team to evaluate players and coaches on the Texas trip in 09-10? Why was Mike Woodson brought in?

One other thing. I responded to someone saying D'Antoni brought guys here. I disagree with that. Guys came because of Amare who was the only bigtime free agent to come in the summer of '10 after he had a reconcilliation meeting with D'Antoni. Posting your stuff about his being an Olympic assistant is getting old and it didn't help in the summer of '10.

MDA may very well be a lame duck coach this year but we'll see. I really feel that the Knicks will at least get to the ECF. We all knew from the day MDA was hired that the plan was to create cap space. As far as MDA not being extended, remember he was hired by Donnie Walsh. He does what we expect this year and I think he'll be back, even with Phil Jackson yet again waiting in the wings to take over a loaded team.

STAT was not going to get the money he got anywhere else but a player is not also going to a team if there isn't some level of respect for the coach. One thing that can't be argued is that MDA is respected by players as well players. We all know the big ticket FA is 2010 was Lebron and the Knicks were never in the running. Melo wanted to come here to team up with STAT but having MDA coach didn't hurt the situation.

I personally give the guy credit. When he first got here and had Crawford, Randolph and the rest the team was playing .500 ball before Donnie blew up the roster. We had Chris freakin Duhon running the point! The guy has not had a set roster let alone a roster with this much talent in NY. I'm willing to wait it out and see how this team performs. If they don't make noise he's gone but I think this team will be the real deal and we'll see what MDA can do with an actual NBA roster much like in PHX.

Here's my 2 cents:

I am not much of a D'Antoni supporter, but I will say this: He was hired to help attract big-time free agents and then coach a talented team, and that is pretty much what has happened so far. The free agents have arrived (though I suppose we can debate exactly how much D'Antoni contributed to their recruitment), and now it's time for him to start winning.

And while I do not think D'Antoni did a whole lot to distinguish himself as a coach in his first three seasons, I also don't think it's fair to judge him too much yet because of all the changes that were made. (What I mean when I say he did not distinguish himself is that I believe many other coaches could have achieved at least the same success as D'Antoni has achieved with us.)

That said, the time has come for D'Antoni to step up and coach this team to a better season than most other coaches would. To me, a good NBA coach lifts his team to greater heights than an average coach would. If D'Antoni seems to have minimal impact on our bottom line, then he's gone, and rightfully so. Does that mean we must get to the ECF? I don't think we can necessarily say that. When the season ends, I think we will know what kind of job D'Antoni did, and whether he should be back or not.

One more thing: To me, the Knicks do not owe D'Antoni anything past this season. He is being paid well, and if the Knicks feel another coach is out there who would be better for them, they have every right to make a change. It's just like when a player becomes a free agent. Sometimes you bring the player back, sometimes you decide to go in another direction.

The claim that he is why guys came here is far from accurate in my opinion. The offseason that guys were supposed to come here was 2010. D'Antoni's presence brought no one. Unlike you other COACHES actually respect D'Antoni. Dude came up with his own offensive system that other coaches recognize as special! Even Phil Jax didn't come up with the triangle offense. I agree that Amare wanted the cash and the chance to prove to the Suns that they made a mistake. However, no one is in NY if Amare doesn't sign here and he and D'Antoni did meet to reconcile differences before he would sign. The big draw for NY was not D'Antoni. The guy that the Knicks signed had to reconcile with him before agreeing to play here.
While helping the Suns become one of the league's best and most exciting teams, D'Antoni and Stoudemire clashed hard and often, leading several executives around the NBA to insist the two would never consider working together again.

On Sunday, D'Antoni wanted to assure Stoudemire that he believes he is a terrific player and that he's 100 percent behind the Knicks' push to bring him to New York, sources said.

Its all about chemistry..........

We have two of the best scoring forwards in the game.

1+1=3

If this is to work the chemistry with MDA, the Stars and the others have to equate to more than just superior "on paper" talent.

This will need some time to work itself thru.

IF the team works to its potential it should yield good results.

If the Divas don't buy into MDA, then you got only PHil Jax as back up.

After that I don't know any mystic who can get MeloStat to blend.

Ok so how did this hurt in signing Amare? If anything it is what got him to put his name in ink on the contract, because Mike D was man enough to sit down with Amare and talk it out.

Unlikely. If you have a spat with someone and you reconcile it usually doesn't mean you now like him over others you didn't fight with. You're actually going to tell me the main reason Amre signed up is because MDA was man enough to talk with him and that noone else was as manly as MDA? Please tell me what you're smoking so I can avoid it.

Amar'e didn't have to love MDA to realize that playing for him was a good idea. As much crap as he talked about MDA not teaching him D, he sure as heck couldn't wait to get back to playing in Mike system, cuz he and his teammates got Terry Porter Fired so that they could go with Mike's old protege Alvin Gentry and play SSOL again. STAT didn't really have a big beef with MDA. They just needed to talk and clear the air. There hasn't been so much as a hint of any discord.

MOST NBA players love MDA. They all know he can help their game and get them lots more money!!! Who wouldn't like that kind of coach? No coach has done more to make players bigger paychecks than D'Antoni. All that said, players also know that Mike has led his teams to the WCF's and a good chance to advance with teams that were good but no all time great teams in terms of how they were built. This Knicks team has a chance to go further because it's built with the needed size and depth. It's not perfect, but it's not far off either. MDA can coach and with this kind of talent and the help he has with Woodson this team should go far. Still it has some big questions and hopefully they can be solved this regular season.

Not reaching Eastern Conference Finals this year = D'Antoni fail
