JR Smith
Aaron Brooks
Wilson Chandler
Reggie Evans
Arenas
Michael Redd
Al Thornton
Julian Wright
Jason Smith
Ike Diogu
Jamario Moon
Sasha Vujacic
Nenad Krstic
Erick Dampier

Considering Dalembert is getting 6-7 M per and Humphries is getting $8 per. I dunno who we can grab for $2.5M. Would love Chandler, Reggie Evans. Dunno much about the other bigs on this list really.

Brooks, Chandler are RFA, and their teams will match. Evans just signed with LAC.

Ok so that eliminates 2 of the guys with some size I like (Evans, Chandler)

Who would help the team the most?

KMart, Diogu, Smith ?

Let's try to elevate the level of discourse in this byeetch. Please

Martin, according to his agent, Andy Miller, is flying back to the U.S. for Christmas, but he is ineligible to play until after his team's season in the Chinese Basketball Association is over -- likely in mid-March. A source familiar with the Knicks' thinking said it is "possible" the Knicks would have interest in signing Martin later in the season if they need a jolt up front and they will pocket their $2.5 million exception. A source said the 33-year-old former Nets star would be amenable to joining the Knicks. New York Post
New York Knicks, Free Agency, Kenyon Martin

Frank Isola: Carmelo Anthony on his former Denver teammate Kenyon Martin getting a buyout from his Chinese team: "We still have money, right?" Twitter

It will be interesting with all the players cleared to return from their China contracts in March, and it could alter the balance of the league. Martin spends a lot of his offseason time in South Florida and around Heat players, so I wouldn't count out the cult of Riley. Any player returning that late in the season clearly will be looking for a deep playoff run, something the Heat should be able to guarantee. South Florida Sun-Sentinel

I read it as the media had interest in seeing if the Knicks had interest, and the Knicks didn't say one way or the other.

D'Antoni was quoted as saying they'd pocket the room exception for now, to see if anything interesting popped up. Which could mean another team waives a guy, or the guys coming back from China.

Best case scenario is that Jorts keeps playing well and they don't have to sign anyone else. Makes it more likely that they'd use the room exception and full MLE next summer.

I think Will is a real possibilty for the MLE next year. I dissagree with the experts that Denver will match for a player that clearly did not want to be there. If anything, they will do a sign and trade to get something back in which case we are hosed. I predict Wilson signs his QO and then becomes a FA...so maybe Will in 2 years. To bad, cuz he was one of our home grown players and i'd love to see him back

His qualifying offer season would be this year.

I believe he'd be UFA this summer. But he's worth more than the full MLE. A guy like Marcus Thornton, who is good but maybe not as good as Wilson, got $8M per year from the Kings. I think Wilson will easily get $8M per year or more. Probably from New Jersey or someone.

I wouldn't expect Wilson to take less to come back to the Knicks. Spurs could amnesty Richard Jefferson in the summer and offer Wilson a good chunk of change, too. I think it's kind of unrealistic to expect Wilson to come back.

Knicks will have to use their MLE to get a PG. Either Baron will play really well and we'll need to use the MLE on him, or Nash will want to come here or MAYBE Felton, but I think Felton is worth more than the MLE, too, mainly because he's younger. I'm sure Felton will use NY to get more money from Portland though.

Wilson Chandler is a RFA but once he leaves China he will sign the Qualifying offer from Denver.
He will play out what is left of the season at that point...
Then he will be an unrestricted Free agent in the summer where he can absolutely take the MLE from the Knicks without any fear of Denver matching.

Yeah, I agree. I don't see any way he takes less money to come to the Knicks. Felton is more of a possibility but only if BD doesn't pan out.

apparently melo and kmart are buddies and want kmart on the knicks. i don't love kmart, but it's hard to deny that he'd be a very good player and great amar'e insurance.

http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/knicks/melo_backs_mart_shop_HyuuyujsUgZlgLJUGX9x2K

The Knicks have one roster spot still open entering tomorrow’s season opener, and Carmelo Anthony hopes it eventually goes to his former Nuggets teammate Kenyon Martin, according to an NBA source.
According to the source, Anthony wants Martin in New York, though he is not permitted to sign a contract until March, when his Chinese team is through with the playoffs. The rugged forward was bought out earlier this week and was expected home for the holidays.
The source said Martin considers the Knicks his top choice, partly because of his friendship with Anthony. They became tight during their nearly seven seasons together in Denver. Martin could fill the role of another gritty big man off the bench with athleticism.

The Knicks have their $2.5 million room exception to offer the ex-Net, who reportedly did not look good in China. But people close to Martin said he was unhappy there and was just collecting a paycheck during the lockout. Nevertheless, by Chinese Basketball Association rules, he is not allowed to play for an NBA team until his Chinese club, Xinjiang, is done.

Are the Knicks really in a position to turn down anyone who can help them on the court?

Yes. It is thinking like this that got us in trouble in the Layden/Isiah years.

Huh?

Splurging on an immature Zach Randolph. Giving up a ton to get Eddy Curry when he had heart issues and no one including the bulls would touch him. Signing Jerome James for the full midlevel for multiple years when he loafed his entire career

is a little bit different

than a completely capped out and THIN team in desperate need for cheap role players offering KMart 2.5 M for a season or two

Even if the KMart signing could end up being a bad decision the SCALE of it makes it a bit unfair to compare Layden/Isiah moves to this one no?

I can see why you don't like KMart and I'm not his biggest fan either but for 2.5M, who else do you suggest the Knicks target to try to give our star frontcourt some help so they don't have to play 35-40 minutes every night?

The team has one chip left in its pocket, its the $2.5M exception. Use it wisely. There may be more cuts, wait for one that will add to the chemistry. Don't just spend it cuz you have it, and then not have it when the right piece comes along. KMart is a broken down old malcontent. Sit tight.

Word. That's the NEW NY Knicks approach. Let's stick to it and not gank our load just because...

Dallas signed him to a 2 year deal, with 2nd year team option.

From the looks of it, Hunter won't be signed. I am not sure if he is still on the team.
I haven't see him play in the preseason games.
I don't mind using the 2.5m on players like that, dividing it in 2 and getting 2 nice players to add in the rotation.
Would have preferred a 3 year deal so we can get bird rights but I don't think we could use the 2.5m for more than 2 years.

Josh Harrellson is about to become a crowd favorite

Jerome Jordan just got here

Please stop with the ridiculous trade nonsense

Jorts is exactly the kind of guy we want: Tough role player who is a solid citizen, high bb IQ, and gets it done on the court. The fans are going to adore him this year.

I think KMart would be a good fit. He can still rebound and plays good D. The guy averages 1 block and 1 steal a game. I'd take the risk with the MLE.

You mean the full Mid Level Exemption in the summer?
or
the Mini Level Exemption we have now?

I personally don't mind him for the Mini, but def not for the Mid Level in the summer. The reports of him doing bad in China, scare me off though.
If he can't dominate there, no way he should be able to compete in the NBA level. I have watched him the past 2 years and he doesn't look much different compared to his
Jersey days, which is very amazing. He looked very comfortable hitting the free throw distance shot as well. Last year, he played limited minutes, with everyone else,
and they had great ball movement, with the ability to penetrate with 2-3 guys, he was left open a lot, and did a great job in a nice all round game.
I don't see him as a great player but if he is healthy and playing the same way as he did last year, he would be great vs our opponents 2nd unit.

Dude IF he comes he walks in to a team that already has its leadership and identity.

usually they are not problems. The juice of a max contract gives them all kinds of power. He won't have leverage in a knick locker room.

Kmart is like Baron Davis. If he's focused and healhy he'll be okay. If Kmart takes the minimum there is no risk and he's another big body for the rotation. Jorts is a good reserve but with the compressed schedule Kmart would help.

Tim Thomas had called K-Mart Fugazi, if I remember correctly.

Yeah but we all started calling TT a fugazy afterward, mostly because of his awful play during the end of his first stint with us.

Ha- it's written in the constitution that every free agent must suggest that they are interested in signing with the Knicks, and that the feeling is mutual, in order to increase their bargaining leverage!

I remember that whole fugazy thing, mainly because it felt like Tim thomas was actually describing himself, yet was completely unaware of it- he even took up boxing that offseason, to drive home the point...
