my point is clear

WE HAD MONEY LEFT TO SPEND, but no one talks about it and wonders why we didn't spend it but me?

are you accounting for the empty cap holds that cost about $500,000 for each empty roster spot? knicks had like 6 guys under contract, meaning, i believe that they would be charged for 6 phantom cap holds to get the roster up to 12. 6 phantom holds x $500,000 = $3M. and you were $1M off on Tyson's starting salary. that adds up to $4M pretty quickly.

i don't think they had room. the news came out very quickly they were after crawford, i want to say saturday night, before they even signed the rookies on sunday morning.

i think your math is wrong.

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- The long-shot attempt to convince Jamal Crawford to take a hefty pay cut to play in New York ended Wednesday when the former Sixth Man of the Year winner informed the Knicks they were no longer under consideration.

But another option has come to the forefront: Baron Davis.

The former All-Star was placed on waivers via the amnesty provision by the Cavaliers last night. If he clears, multiple sources say there is mutual interest between Davis and the Knicks.

Two questions still need to be answered: First, will the Knicks use the $2.5 million "room exception" to sign the 32-year-old or will he accept a veteran's minimum of $1.4 million? Second, and more importantly, what kind of condition is he in? Reports out of Cleveland said the Cavs discovered Davis had a herniated disc in his back. He has not participated in the Cavs' training camp.

Davis' agent, Todd Ramasar, told Yahoo! Sports that the disc injury will cause his client to miss eight to 10 weeks at a minimum.

If Davis clears waivers, the Knicks could wait until Davis is healthy to sign him or sign him and assist in his rehabilitation process. The back injury could deter teams from making a waiver claim on him, which would leave him available to sign with the Knicks.

After learning he was placed on waivers, Davis posted on Twitter: "At this point I am just going to focus on my back! That's my main concern so I can be able to play the game I love.!!"

Free agent Shawne Williams is also a candidate for the "room exception." The 25-year-old former first-round pick revived his career last season with the Knicks and provides a much-needed three-point shooting prowess off the bench and the versatility to defend at either forward position.

"Shawne made incredible strides last season," said Amar'e Stoudemire, whose agent, Happy Walters, represents Williams. "I think being around us and learning how to play the game helped him a lot."

Mike D'Antoni said he touched base with Williams to let him know there was interest, while he also spoke with Crawford in that recruiting process. Crawford would have provided the Knicks with offense off the bench. Instead, he is expected to choose between Portland and Sacramento.

The Knicks' bench will rely on veteran guard Mike Bibby, rookie Iman Shumpert and forward Bill Walker for offense.

Williams, who averaged 7.1 points in 20.7 minutes per game last season, would provide a little more bench scoring. D'Antoni said despite the stacked frontcourt, there definitely are rotation minutes available behind Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony. There are times Williams can play in a small lineup at power forward with Stoudemire at center.

But Stoudemire doesn't expect to see many minutes at center with the arrival of Tyson Chandler. In fact, Stoudemire said he has worked a lot on his ever-improving perimeter game and could play the role of the "stretch" forward to leave the pick-and-rolls for Chandler. "I've been working on my three-point shot," Stoudemire said.

Media outlets don't seem to agree on Davis' health. Some announce his agent's communication that he will be out 8-10 weeks, while some say it isn't as severe as suggested. I'd still sign him after getting Shawne, but I think we should still look to get another player.

same. I would make Baron go thru a thorough physical before signing, and def don't sign until near 100% healthy.

We signed Chandler, the rookies, Jordan, Bibby, Jeffries, Hunter and Green. There wasn't money left after all that.

If it is possible to use the mini MLE to submit a claim on a Baron, I would use it for three reasons. (1) The medical staff can assist in his recovery, (2) another team might put a low ball claim in, and (3) the yoots gets to develop while knowing a playoff upgrade is coming

Baron would be a nice luxury.

Shawne is a key piece for the second unit and slides in to back up Amare.

Shawne opens the floor up with that corner shot.

SSOL requires a guy named Shawn(e) to pop open looks from the corner. Shawn Marion did very well in SSOL and got a big fat contract.

Shawne Williams I think understands his longer term value is best served playing in the system and perhaps a promise by knicks to get him money if he stays.

He also is just a season completed from his exile of "boneheadedness" which he did very well. Another season without incident and good statistics would get him a better pay day.

I can only imagine my scenario is why he has waited and not signed yet with anyone. I'll miss Donnie and his loyalty to guys he believes in. Does not always pan out but they guy makes for good stories!

Regarding Baron, the back thing and its timing is just too much coincidence. Im always in for a conspiracy as much as the next guy and think its a ploy to walk thru waivers. Baron has been in and out of shape for years. When healthy he is a beast. I don't know why Cleveland would Amnesty him unless they plan on using the money elsewhere. I could see a buy out making more sense. Baron gets his freedom and Gilbert saves money.

right, I understand that. But we should have money left over RIGHT AFTER, we amnestied Billup's, and doing the 3 team trade of Chandler/Turiaf...

Martin, my head is strong but I just find its strange why we gave up on the opportunity to have salary in the range of 4-5m to spend with the 2.5 exemption and didnt....

unless, we couldn't sign the Rookie's from being signed

from being over the cap,
then going under the cap,

there is room left over, we decided, to sign the rookies, and offer minimum contracts to JJ, Bibby, then the rookies, and then Green/Hunter.

Think about it, something is wrong....
With 4-5m of cap space and another 2.5 exemption, we could offer talented players to come to New York with more than a 1 year deal on top of it...

Out of the Rookies, I think only Iman is a must sign, between Jort's and Jordan, I don't see them being a big contribution this year.

Bibby and JJ could wait to be signed, till we use whatever is b4 going over the cap.

THINK ABOUT IT, 4-5m and 2.5 exemption can attract

Ak47 for sure, possibly Crawford for all the Crawford lovers, and resign Shawnee Williams....

Just saying Martin, it could make a big difference bro...
