Howard + Gilbert to NJ for Lopez + ?
how do you match salaries? I just don't see how NJ can pull it off, no assets outside of Lopez.
I know Orlando would like to get rid of Arenas and Turkoglu, but they can't really trade them together for anyone without absolutely robbing the LA Lakers, can they? Besides, they're still over the cap even if they trade one of those guys. If they're focused on getting rid of the bad contracts, then New Jersey won't happen, but if they want to
I bet on Jersey because Jersey doesn't have much in the way of player assets, but they have seven draft picks over the next three years and have to convince Derron Williams to stay next year, so they're going to go all-in to get another star and so they won't care whether he signs or not, just like they did with Derron. It doesn't happen if Dwight Howard publicly forces his way out, but he hasn't done that at all and has said that he wants to be in Orlando next season.
To match salaries today, the Nets trade Morrow, Lopez and Outlaw to Orlando. They also trade two first-round picks in 2012, a second round pick this year, and another first and second in 2013 or 2014. Sure, Orlando's taking bad contracts back, but with all the draft picks they can bring in talent to build the team around Lopez as the older guys and the bad contracts phase out. If Orlando pulls the trigger, they're not good next year but they have three first round picks in what will be an unusually strong draft class in 2012, and probably have a shot at the #1 pick because they're not very good. If they have a bad year then hit on one or two of those three picks and keep Lopez, they'll quickly get back to contention.
Anyway you slice it, Orlando's going into a long-term rebuilding mode if they can't convince Howard to stay, so why wouldn't they consider it?
