This has the make of a 48 win team every year that might win a first round series here and there for the next 5 years. But we will have 2 all stars and sell out and all that so the excitement is back!

So Wilkins, Chaney, Downtown, Isiah had the same talent that MDA has now? And, being that they had infefior talent they certainly did not deserve to be let go, right?

Are you ok with a bad showing in the first round? There has to be some accountability even for you. Not everyone has MJ/Kobe.

Who cares what talent they had? Did they get their teams to compete every night and exceed expectations? Since that's the only way to grade a coach right?

acknowledging the sarcasm at brushing it aside, YES that is exactly how you grade a coach. If they get the most out of their players, they are doing a GREAT job. It's not that complicated. I don't care if they are bottom-feeders das long as the coach gets the most out of them.

Does catching on the sarcasm, somehow excuse you from answering the question? Go ahead and explain how Larry Brown and Lenny Wilkens got the most out of the Knicks here, day in and day out and exactly how they exceeded expectations. And while you are at it name exactly how many head coaches in teh NBA fits that definition of greatness.

The question does not need to be answered. Why? CAUSE THEY GOT FIRED FOR NOT GETTING THE MOST OUT OF THEIR PLAYERS.

MDA is no different and will suffer the same fate while you are blue in the face defending him. Also, you don't have to be a HOF/Great Coach to get the most out of your players or exceed expectations.

And while I'm at it:

Thibs - team looks hungry to me
COLLINS - kind of obvious
Williams - team has the fighting spirit
Mcmillan - losing Roy and of course Ogden - still pretty pretty good
Carlisle - ooh yeah

Coaches not named "POP, Jax, Doc"

E-F-F-O-R-T needs to be sustained by the fearless leader

And let us not forget: this is the team that MDA wanted - now he must do something with it

So Thibs has coached Rose and Boozer to be elite defenders on a day in day out basis? Take Noah out and tell me what that team does defensively.

Collins is having a good run, hasn't proved anything yet. I'll wait till he keeps this up for an 82 game season with a coupke of roster makeovers thrown in.

Williams - Agreed

Mavs are an elite defensive team? I don't think they make the top 10.

Portland is even further back than Dallas this with Camby on the team. I MDA had Camby and wasn't top 5 in team defense, you would want him fired a month ago.

Our best defensive players are Turiaf and Jeffries. But we can argue till we are blue in the face, you want MDA to change his style - don't hold your breadth.

The coaches I mentioned are getting the most out of their players. Is MDA getting the most out of his players? I say no! He is definitely deficient in defensive stoppers partly because he traded them away. I play (actually on my way now) organized ball for 30 years and it baffles me watching his defensive schemes. Funnelling baseline to nobody, no P N R defense, no one rotating to the shooter and Boxing OUT? way too advanced!!

Losing to cleveland the first time? I could deal with that. But, no well coached team would have blown such a fart the second time. Indiana? puke!

MDA's defense is less than stellar, I never argued that. Boxing out is definitely a key issue and directly leads to abysmal rebounding. Now put Camby in here and see grab 12 boards a game, does that suddenly mean MDA is coaching better defense. Execution matters and we are not executing on either end of the ball right now. MDA didn't trade anyone away.

TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

I posted this on the other thread but i think it applies to your post... this was gleaned off another forum i think there are some very salient points being made here u can clearly see the impact that Thibs has had on that Bulls team just about every single one of them are playing better defense than they've ever done in their entire NBA careers... i'm not sure how that can be dismissed it's pretty cut & dry... that team went from being a #11 in the NBA defensive ranking to #1 in his very first season as head coach, that's a huge jump... take a look at how much improvement his players have undergone in their defensive ranking after Thibs took over that team, there's pretty much improvement across the board for every single player in their rotation.

To show you a coach has a direct causal effect on a player’s defense, please see below. You will note that all players under Tom -- even those not mentioned -- have a defensive rating increase. Notice Derrick Rose’s stats, in particular. His team was not that much different than the year before. Still had Luol Deng and Noah as defenders. His rating increased by 7 points…. This is when you introduce Boozer (known for poor defense) and Bogans to the starting lineup (who also increased his defensive rating under Tom: a career 107 points allow per hundred possessions went to 103).

Mind you that Rose’s stats increased by such a dramatic amount while having Noah injured for a few months…

Tom increased the team’s defensive rating a full 10 spots… He made them a number one team. Note this was expected because he was a great defensive coach…

Bulls:
2010- 2011:
Off Rtg: 107.1 (16th of 30) ▪ Def Rtg: 100.0 (1st of 30)

2009-2010:
Off Rtg: 103.5 (27th of 30) ▪ Def Rtg: 105.3 (11th of 30)

From my other thread:

Derrick Rose
1) 2009-10:109
2) 2010-11: 102 (Tommy)
3) Career: 109

Boozer
1) 2009-10: 102
2) 2010-11: 99 (Tommy)
3) Career: 103

Ronnie Brewer
1) 2009-10: 108
2) 2010-11: 98 (Tommy)
3) Career: 105

Keith Bogans
1) 2009-2010: 106
2) 2010-2011: 103 (Tommy)
3) Career: 107

Deng
1) 2009-10: 106
2) 2010-11: 102 (Tommy)
3) Career: 104

Noah
1) 2009-10: 101
2) 2010-11: 96 (Tommy)
3) Career: 102

i agree with ur last point it's pretty pointless to hope for MDA to ever change his coaching style he's married to his system & will go down with it if he has to... but therein lies the concern & frustration that a lot of fans have when u see us play such porous defense against teams like the Cavaliers & Pacers it's not easy to stomach i don't care if you're a fan of D'Antoni's or not, fans would like to see a coach who can raise the level of the team's intensity on the D... that's what most Knick fans have grown up watching & it's what endeared this franchise to many Knick fans to begin with... SSOL can be very fun to watch at times when the team is making 3's from every spot on the court but when their shot stops falling you'd like to know u can fall back on playing defense to stem the tide of the opposition's run.

We've gone all in with an offensive team. The coach is an offensive guy and the Star players with few exceptions are stronger on offense than D. We don't need to be top 10 in D. We need to get better, but it's unrealistic to think we're gonna turn these guys into stoppers. Donnie will have to find role players that can bring more D and it's possible that he'll be able to make some improvements over the next few years. Let's remember this is year one of this new direction. We wanted 2 stars at the core and to look to maybe add a 3rd in 2012, but Donnie actually did a great job by getting Billups who gives us a 3rd star NOW.

The one bad part of this was having to give up a few more players than we wanted. That means we have some weaknesses. Still with a little more time this team should be able to get the defensive chemistry down enough to pay winning ball. We just got Chauncey back and i'd like fans to see how things develop the final 17 games before getting too crazy about the job MDA is doing. I believe he's gonna get this team playing at a high level. If this team is clicking by the playoffs we can compete with anyone in the East. If we play a great 1st rd series but lose I think we could live with that, but i'd love to see the team get to the 2nd rd. That would really validate this group. Coach and players.

A good close 1st round and I could live with that. If we go 6-7 hotly contested games but end up on the bottom, it's ok. It would show this team has what it takes to compete with championship contenders. Boston, Chicago, Orlando are all up there. This team needs to play adequate D for that to happen. We don't need top 10 but we can't have bottom 3rd or lower either. Especially since in the playoffs opposing Ds tighten and we can't expect to simply outgun our opponents.

This team has shown that it can play and win close playoff style games against top teams. We have to separate the way this team has handled the regular season from how they'll play in the playoffs. It's a different animal. This team has for the most part showed up for most of their games against good teams. I feel pretty confident that they'll do that in the playoffs.

Barkley rips 'D' Knicks for tix hike

It's hard to say what outspoken TNT analyst Charles Barkley ripped worse -- the Knicks for hiking their season-ticket prices or the team's lack of defensive prowess.

After calling Knicks ownership a "disgrace" yesterday on the radio, Barkley continued his attack on "The Late Show with David Letterman." The NBA legend said, despite trading for the offensively-gifted Carmelo Anthony, the Knicks may be the worst defensive club in the history of basketball.

"Oh, they got Carmelo Anthony and everybody's excited," Barkley said. "You know, in the history of basketball . . . first of all, Carmelo's a terrific player, Amar'e [Stoudemire's] a terrific player and I like Landry Fields, but I gotta say, I watched the Knicks play. In the history of all basketball, they may be the worst defensive team ever. They play zero defense, and they're not gonna do well in the long run."

In an interview with WFAN earlier in the day, Barkley ripped Knicks brass for its plan to hike season-ticket prices 49 percent. Season-ticket prices had not been raised the past six years because of owner James Dolan's policy of not raising them when the team doesn't make the playoffs.

"That was a disgrace, a flat-out disgrace," Barkley said. "Come on, that's not fair at all. To raise tickets that much, and I understand that all these guys are trying to make money, but 50 percent is a little extreme. Let me rephrase that, a lot extreme.

"The Knicks have been stinking for a long time and these fans have always been loyal. For them to jab them like that with a 50 percent increase, that's unfair."

Stoudemire said the Knicks owe the Pacers some payback after getting blown out in their own building on Sunday.

"Yeah, it matters. We got to win. They beat us here in New York, so we've got to go back to Indiana and play the revenge game," said Stoudemire.

I actually agree with this. Sad but true. It would be nice if the coach actually pushed these guys against the bottom feeders. Sounds like the players just play when they wanna play.

We shall see. If we are like a crappier version of the Lakers, flipping the switch during the playoffs, so be it, but I haven't seen enough to arrive at that conclusion.

I think the defensive lapses have the same origin: The players CAN do it, but only if they choose to put forth the effort. Defense flows from effort, skill alone isn't enough. If MDA de-emphasizes effort on the defensive end, he needs to get gone. But I highly doubt that's the case. It's on the players to bring it every night, especially the stars.

I agree with you in the sense that the postseason is a different animal, but no team is going to completely separate their style of play from the regular season going into the playoffs, especially the Knicks. For example, Boston's identity begins with the establishment of their defense. They may tweak a few things here and there for the playoffs, but the key ingredient will remain their defensive identity. For the Knicks, they're going to have to really improve their offensive strategy and shot making ability, which contradicts what most teams look to do, which is tighten up their defense.

And I sure hope that they don't shoot 30 3's a game in the playoffs. That would be a disaster! TD FOR 3 ... Clank! Now he is 1-14 and it's only the second quarter!

maybe not over the course of his career, but he did at times. He's in the Allen Iverson class of MVP--the guys who did a lot despite their physical stature or lack thereof. What he could do at his height is amazing.

But I remember MJ had little respect for him as a player because he didn't give 100 percent. And Scottie Pippen wanted out of Houston immediately after being on his team.

So, yeah, I don't really appreciate hustle and effort comments made by Chuck

I think if Camby was on the team, they would be a better defensive team? Probably. But not where they should/could be. It is his defensive style/philosophy that is inherintly wrong. Boxing out, PNR Defense, FUNNELING BASELINE!!!

He just does not get it. Of course if MDA coached the 80's/early 90's Pistons they would have been a good defensive team but not nearly as good as they were under Chuck Daley.
