there's really no way to know which 7 footers this summer we can get that will make us championship calibre until we find out what the new CBA sets the cap limit at.

but if u want a list of guys who i think are realistic options for us this summer if the cap remains about the same, i think we're gonna be looking at 1 year stopgap solutions for next season someone like Joel Pryzbilla is probably gonna be talked about this summer, or other guys not quite 7 footers like Jeff Foster, Etan Thomas, etc. I don't think we have a realistic shot at guys like Dalembert, Jordan or Gasol.

After 7 years & 40K+ posts, banned by martin for calling Nalod a 'moron'. Awesome.

You guys are slowly talking me into dalembert but I need to see if he has what it takes against real centers. To say nene can't handle Bynum and howard implies dalembert can.
Let's go Knicks. That's amare

Personally, I like Varejao the best. High energy, high iq, excellent rebounder and defender, good passer and he doesn't need the ball to be effective. He's exactly the type of player I hate watching my team play against. If we could find a way to get Varejao and Sessions from Cleveland we'd almost be set.

Ibaka? He's about as available as Melo is. Please.

I like the Florida State kid Benson. He's got NBA size and his shortcomings seem correctable. Most of all he plays defense like its his #1 job.

There is no way, ZERO chance that Clippers dont match a MLE type offer for Jordan. The Magic matched that offer for Gortat. Cmon people.. we arent getting Jordan unless its a sign and trade and we include the long beach kid Fields.

My #1 would be Mosgov. Simply because we know he could look good next to Amare, the coaching staff and players liked him and he fit well here. I mentioned trading for him on draft day after we pick a player (we can do that)

My #2 would be Benson (see above)

My #3... hmmm who's available? Luke warm on Dalembert. He could be a good fit, he could be terrible here and just get in the way. We have two forwards that operate in the post a lot, and wants to KEEP them in the post. I already see too many mid range jumpers. I want Melo/Stat closer the rim

fishmike Benson plays for Oakland and I don't see him close to being ready to play a C position in the nBA. He could be a nice long term pick for PF

Mosgov for our 1 would be a deal that i would be interested in. Kind of scks though doesnt it? We couldn't be patient.

Chris Kaman.....lol anyone who has watched the Clippers play knows he's in no way a solution.... not even in the slightest bit

We used to have Chris Hunter on the team when we were still in need of bigs...D'AnToni allowed him to be cut in favor of picking up someone like Bender down the road...another lol

Jerome Jordan is like Cheik Samb

Sean Williams is like Chris Wilcox

Mozgov is like Darko

The others aren't really attainable except maybe 1

Can we add Jordan Hill....while we're at it oh and Keith Benson

See the matching trends here folks?

Ray Allen and KG will also be FA in 2012.

I really want to add a quality defensive player this summer, I know that is what we are missing to be a championship caliber center.
I dont think we should pick up Billup's contract for next year.

Can someone please answer this question?
Does anyone know if we go this route, the 4 million to buy him out, would that be held against our cap for next year?

Ray Ray would be a great pick up if the MLE still exist too. And we can keep Fields if we commit to a center this year.
Steve Nash would also be great. I don't think we can realistically add both with the MLE and LLE though.
But if veterans are really willing to come to New York at a discount these 2 are true veterans that would add depth.
In order for discount players to come in 2012, I think we have to make a lot of noise in 2011. We have to show we are
contenders, be a top 3 seed in the East, or at least make the playoffs and play 2 tough teams down to the wire.

If we do pick up Bilups contract, we will have about 60m in total contracts, including Turiaf. He has a 4.4 player option. Not including the 1st round pick this summer.
With the new CBA, we have to make a decision 5 days after our season ends, including our playoff run.
It will be tough to make this decision, we don't want to lose a player like Billups. He can really teach our young guys some things in a year.
But we have to add at least one quality center this to be contenders, I think we need 2 though.
There are a lot of uncertainties and questions about the CBA that affect this decision, however, we won't know the answers before we are able to cut Billups.

If there really is a hard cap, Dallas might not be able to sign Tyson Chandler. I think the that a few teams would be looking for his services, and provide him a starting spot.
Not many teams with the cap room, are contenders, and assure him a starting spot. I think he would be a great addition to the Knicks but 2 other teams include...

Nets *Brook Lopez moves to PF* or they can go for a player like Nene/David West, they have about 40m in contracts.

Denver *they will have a lot of cap room, with JR Smith, Martin, and Nene as free agents. *nene has a player option at 11.6m, i think he would opt out for a longer contract*
they also have Wilson Chandler as a restricted free agent. They have about 33m in contracts for 2011. With the way they are playing now, players would be interested in them.

If Turiaf opts out and Billups contract is picked up, would it be enough to add a Center to use. If this happens, it would affect our cap for 2012 if it is longer than a 1 year deal.
I dont see any players that would have join us for a 1 year deal besides for D league players. With the cap room we have left, assuming its about 60, we would have about 4m to spend
minus the 1st round pick.

Kris Humphries
Joel Prizbilla i dont think this it would be enough to grab these type of centers, but the new CBA could raise the cap to 65m, we can have the ability to do so.
==================================================================================================================================================================

Dan Gadzuric
Kurt Thomas
Jared Jeffries
Sean Williams and rest D League are players we can probably get the the MIN

===================================================================================================================================================================
Shawn Williams
Mat Barnes

Anthony Parker
Shannon Brown

these are players that we could use with the rest of the cap if Turiaf opts out and have a chance to sign....

Dalembert is probably going to cost about the MLE money
Kristic would be about 3-5m

But both players would be seeking at least a 3 year deal...

Kandyman
Brand
Odom
Maggette
Q Richardson

were wall broken up however, not one player there is dominant as Blake Griffen. If Sterling is ever to break the bank for the future, it would be now while they have

Blake Griffen
Eric Gordon
Deandre Jordan are all in their rookie contracts...

Mo Williams has a player option, if he is signed to a fair long term deal, they would have a promising young core.
Bledsoe has also shown to ability to play as well.

While Deandre Jordan/Chris Kaman are one of the best depth in centers in the league, this is where I expect them to cut some savings on.

Dallas: Tyson Chandler/Haywood
Lakers: Bynum/Gasol

I honestly don't think they would let match Deandre Jordan's offer, possibly only not if he is thrown a MAX or REALLY CLOSE to it.
They would rather look to trade Kaman, he still has value being a serviceable center, with an expiring contract in the league.
Then bring in a back up Center for good value like....

Prizbilla
Humphries
Dalembert

maybe even give a shot at Yao Ming to compete with LA Lakers. They have under 50m in contracts next year. Realistically their only real need is a small forward. If they get an all star caliber player one, they will be contenders in the West for many upcoming years. If healthy and Sterling is willing to pay over the luxary tax and keep their core intact.
We think we can only say a couple teams in the have such a promising future...

Lakers (nice combination of youth and veterans)
Thunder (very young, dominant, and speedy core)

Dallas (has contracts ending this year and they are way over luxury tax and players aren't that young)

Deandre Jordan/Chris Kaman
Blake Griffen
_________Wilson Chandler??/Gomes
Eric Gordon/Foye
Mo Williams/Bledsoe

they have an all star and dominant presence in Blake Griffen, something they didn't have their earlier years.
Brand when he was younger was very close to 20/10 himself, although slightly undersized was close.
I really believe Sterling would go all in this time, they can trade Kaman for a very serviceable SF or attempt to sign Wilson Chandler.
They can also sign a PF/C like David West/Zach Randolph as well...

if we do pick up Billups contract

we can have

Turiaf 4.4 player option
Walker 920k team option
Rautins 800k

Fields 800k
TD 1.2m
Balkman 1.7m (bad contract, so loses value)

Shawne Williams *sign n trade*

our 1st round pick this summer
2 golden state picks *we traded our own 2nd rounders for Melo not GS's*
Draft rights to Jerome Jordan

I am not saying to trade Fields or TD but we actually still have some chips and contracts to trade for serviceable players.
We need a Center, we are not getting anyone that would be legit from signing 1 year deals from free agency.
We can use some D league talent on our roster but I don't think they know if they can be legit starting centers if we want to be contenders for the next 4-5 years.

With the players and team options, when would they have to make a decision, and if we trade them, can they be used for the other team to save $ for Turiaf and Walker.
I just can't see us being a contender this year with our Center's and if we don't upgrade that spot, we won't be contenders next year either.

are 2012 worth risking players for to give up on 2 years of Amare in his prime, 1.5 years of Melo in his prime?
if we sign a PG(cp3,most likely the way NO is doin in 2012 summer), we have no big man, we would have to wait another year to sign a MLE(if exist) talent, lose Fields in the process.

our project possible big men for 2012 would be
this years 1st rounder
Jerome Jordan

guys, can anyone also answer me this...

Can we not pick up Billup's 14.4m contract and sign for like 24m 3 year deal? Do we still own his bird rights? It doesn't make a real difference since we would be under the cap and no one would look to give Billups an increase in salary.

If we go this route we have the cap ability to possibly add a body such as

Dalembert
Humphries
Prizbilla

Yao Ming?

and we can keep Fields or depending on the CBA, sign another serviceable player in 2012.
However, if the MLE still exist, would it be better to look to sign and trade our players so we go over the cap, and be able to resign Fields and gaining the MLE?

Ray Allen
Nash
KG? 5 year max with increase, player options for MLE?

I think yes, but it would depend on cap numbers and how much under the cap the Knicks were. I don't think it would be bird rights so much as cap space.

I didn't add up the numbers, but I think the Knicks could prob swing it.

Regarding Fields, I do believe we will be able to sign him even if over the cap.

The recent news that the Knicks, are looking to extend Billups past 2012 really got me thinking this is the route they are taking. I do not believe they are looking to keep the 14.4m contract, and extend him the way TD has played during this stretch. I know TD was up and down but the Knicks themselves know Jared Jeffries isn't starting material for next year as our center.

Throughout his past experience, David Lee and Nate Robinson, both were giving fair contracts during their qualifying offer years. Making his own players happy and preserving value for the future of the franchise.

If we reshape Billups contract with a 24m for another 3 years is a very fair deal, considering giving his 14m contract up for next year. It would be 5m per year for 2 more years.
If Turiaf also opts out, we would have enough $ to add to our hole in Center and add to depth.
The more I think about it, I believe this is the route the Knicks are going to take.

Stat/Melo 37m

Billups 8m
Balkman 1.7m
TD 1.2m
Fields 800k

Rautins 800k *can we cut him, not counting on our cap?*
Walker 900k *player option, might not even pick up his contract*
1st rounder 1m

About 50m in salaries

if cap is 60-65m

we have about 9-15m to save ir Turiaf does indeed opt out
if not we have 4-10m to use

our needs would be Center
6th man type player G/F spots
rest we can use min deals

Finestrg wrote:Doubtful we're championship-caliber next year; the foundation's pretty much set and that's the hardest part..Now we need to put the rest of the house together brick by brick. Construction might take until 2012..Let's just say 'well on our way' not 'championship' yet. How's that? Very realistic options (most of these aren't SEXY but I don't think we'll need sexy..Some aren't even 7 feet tall and I don't think we necessarily need that requsite either----I'll take a guy 6'8"--6'11" that can play over a guy that's 7'+ that can't EVERYTIME):

1) Draft Kenneth Faried and move STAT over to the 5 at least to start start the game.

2) Pick up Marcus Cousin on the cheap this offseason. Utah called him up & has him now--hopefully that just turns out to be a cup of coffee and they don't give him a serious look and plan to retain him..Hopefully he becomes available to us this offseason. I think he'd be perfect.

3) Monitor the Jeff Adrien situation in GS--if they don't give him a serious look and he becomes available, we should jump on him too..Same deal as Faried---STAT moves over to the 5 to get Adrien on the floor at the 4.

4) Sean Williams looks much improved and more mature this year. Might be worth a shot. If we don't give him a look I think he's back in the NBA next season helping somebody else, maybe even one of our rivals.

5) We'll have to wait for him to develop a little, but maybe we can grab Keith Benson in the 2nd round..Go primarily with a Turiaf/Cousin combination in the middle for next year while Benson sits, learns and gets stronger..Benson's then ready to contribute by year 2..

6) I actually like what I've seen from Vernon Goodridge this year in the DL..He plays bigger than he is and really knows his role..I can see why we had interest in him over a month ago..Have no idea why we abandoned that interest. This guy could've helped us this year. Still can with a little roster juggling.

7) For what we need (some size and rebounding inside), I can't for the life of me see why we never gave 6'11" Dwayne Jones a shot here on a 10-day contract..Maybe we finally give this guy a look.

----------------------------

You mentioned Cleveland--let's take a good look at that team..I think they prove my theory correct..They've stood toe to toe with us and beat us everytime this year with the following frontcourt players not named Jamison: Anderson Varejao (solid NBA role player who was great against us that first loss in Cleveland); since then it's been guys like JJ Hickson, Samardo Samuels and Luke Harangody---all 3 underdog-types, not one 7 feet tall, that play very hard & never once backed down to us..Samuels wasn't even drafted. Why can't we benefit from guys like that?? We most certainly could.

I just saw on realgm that Cousin isn't getting a second 10 day contract with the Jazz.

If we spend the 4 million "buying out" Billups contract and then extend him, does the 4 million count against the cap? That is the big question...
