Knicks signed Felton for 2 years for a reason and he wasn't playing that well for a larger portion of the year that the portion he played well.
To distinguish between Felton and Billups in the long-term view is pretty manipulative.
And Gallo, Chandler and Randolph were all due for a long-term decision within 16 months.
If you want to argue the Knicks should have essentially held onto that core and stood pat, then your argument has relevance.
But if you wanted to see the Knicks upgrade through free agency, then Chandler couldn't be retained under any circumstances.
If the reason we got Melo here was to sell tickets and merch than this is a terrible trade for the Knicks. (Isiah + Dolan)
It can legitimately be PART of the reason. Second the trade happen, ESPN, TNT and NBA-TV began picking up more Knicks games. The better marketed the team is, the higher their profile, the easier it will be to attract better players, eventually on the veterans on minimum deals the Heat and Celtic rosters are now littered with.
This was a 45 win team with HUGE growth potential internally and (minus Chandler) max cap space this offseason.
To spend on?
Restricted free agents?
David West?
Who?
We are essentially back to square one minus picks, minus cap space, minus a deep rotation and PLUS Melo.
KNicks will have cap space in 2012.
Does anyone have ANY doubt that with max cap space and a pick Walsh could have gotten this team from 45 wins to 50+?
Does anyone doubt this team can be a 50+ team next season, then with cap space next summer?
BUT if we fail to advance out of round one its a disaster as this IS 100% a win now team with 2 all star forwards and a Finals MVP at PG.
Carmelo Anthony is 26 years old.
Lakers and Celtics are perhaps the two favorites to win the title. Spurs and Mavs are in the conversation.
You're simply vastly overstating the loss of 3-4 years between Gallo/Chandler and Melo.
And Anthony was acquired in February when the work of the Knicks you so admired basically slotted them into a bottom 4 seed, in the top-heavy east. To say the Melo-Knicks must overcome the seeding the Gallo/Chandler-Knicks put them in is unfair, but I suspect that's the whole point.
spin it anyway you want.. Felton has a 3rd year. It was an option. Stop gap for 2 years UNLESS. Knicks could have kept him and extended him EVEN IF THERY WERE OVER THE CAP. Thats a GREAT option to have at a critical position.
Melo's age isnt a concern for me or the difference between Melo's age and the guys we gave up. The age issue was wirth Billups and the fact that we gave up 4 rotation players (starters) and one prospect for one player and one on the way out.
As for Melo being penalized because of our current seeding your joking right? Didnt we get Melo to be elite and compete with the other star studded teams in the east? I thought that was the point.
And cap space in 2012? Really dude? Go run the #s and get back to me.... I like Melo but his extension kills the 3rd star, it just does. And even if you wiggle it you have 3 stars and NO supporting cast which we are seeing in Mia does matter. Good bye Fields and anyone else. At that point Amare is 30 with his sug repaired knees. The timing doesnt add up.
You like to spin this trade like these things dont matter. They do. Alot. Trading the house for Melo has a downside. I fully expect us to be elite this time next year and competing for a title. I like Melo and want this to succeed. Yes he's a Diva, but he's OUR diva. This trade was made to win a title. We could have competed and made the playoffs just fine with the very deep, young and improving team we had.
I am pro Melo. I always have been. Not at the price we paid, but life goes on. Hopefully we does what we brought him to do
