I just thought we could have really won big time if we were a little frugal with our offer. Like fish said, it is water under the bridge. You guys should really not get mad if we still like Gallo. Like I said in another thread, you should be extremely happy with Gallo. Gallo is one of the reasons we have Melo here now.

I wish nothing but the best for all the guys the team gave up. They were key contributors for the best Knicks team in a decade, possibly longer. So, no, I bear no ill will towards any of them and I'm pretty sure guys like TMS would say the same exact thing

5-2

And they play in a tougher division- last I checked our record would not have us in the play offs there.

Any idea if there losses are to Cleveland too?

Being in a tougher division is by far the WORST indicator for 7 games.

You just hope Melo is good enough that he makes getting the other pieces easier. Gallo could do some special things (like guard positions). He's totally inconsistent, but he works hard and you have to think he will grow out of that some. Is what it is... water under the bridge

In order for the Knicks to "lose" this deal, Gallo's career would have to exceed Melo's. Can't see it happening. Could see him making a couple of All Star games and be a very good player. I don't doubt that. I do doubt everyone being able to recall the full deal in five years time. Especially Marv

Knicks gave up AR, Gallo, Mosgov, Felton and Chandler for Melo and I guy who's gone in a year. Thats a lot of chedder. Its more than just Gallo. How many AS games did Rip, Ben Wallace, Chauncy, Prince and Sheed go to? Depth can win and win a title.

If we win a title with Melo its a 100%, just like the Giants trading for Eli was a 100% worth it. Thats why this trade was made.

If the reason we got Melo here was to sell tickets and merch than this is a terrible trade for the Knicks. (Isiah + Dolan)

This was a lopsided deal to get a "star." So go be a star. This Knick team was better than it was playing. The young players were clearly bothered by the looming trade. This was a 45 win team with HUGE growth potential internally and (minus Chandler) max cap space this offseason. This team had size, skill and great diversity. We are essentially back to square one minus picks, minus cap space, minus a deep rotation and PLUS Melo. Billups will be good for this year and maybe next.

Does anyone have ANY doubt that with max cap space and a pick Walsh could have gotten this team from 45 wins to 50+?

Melo is about one thing... winning a title. We were going to the playoffs. We had a bunch of good wins against good teams (SA, OKC, CHi, etc).

I dont expect us to win a title this year, thats not fair, BUT if we fail to advance out of round one its a disaster as this IS 100% a win now team with 2 all star forwards and a Finals MVP at PG.

Of course if the Bulls beat us it will be MDA's fault and we can suffer through a summer of those posts (puke)

Knicks were NEVER signing any of the 2012 free agents and keeping Gallinari. His $12.6m cap hold stood in the way.

Gallinari is tradeable.

Knicks signed Felton for 2 years for a reason and he wasn't playing that well for a larger portion of the year that the portion he played well.

To distinguish between Felton and Billups in the long-term view is pretty manipulative.

And Gallo, Chandler and Randolph were all due for a long-term decision within 16 months.

If you want to argue the Knicks should have essentially held onto that core and stood pat, then your argument has relevance.

But if you wanted to see the Knicks upgrade through free agency, then Chandler couldn't be retained under any circumstances.

It can legitimately be PART of the reason. Second the trade happen, ESPN, TNT and NBA-TV began picking up more Knicks games. The better marketed the team is, the higher their profile, the easier it will be to attract better players, eventually on the veterans on minimum deals the Heat and Celtic rosters are now littered with.

To spend on?

Restricted free agents?

David West?

Who?

Carmelo Anthony is 26 years old.

Lakers and Celtics are perhaps the two favorites to win the title. Spurs and Mavs are in the conversation.

You're simply vastly overstating the loss of 3-4 years between Gallo/Chandler and Melo.

And Anthony was acquired in February when the work of the Knicks you so admired basically slotted them into a bottom 4 seed, in the top-heavy east. To say the Melo-Knicks must overcome the seeding the Gallo/Chandler-Knicks put them in is unfair, but I suspect that's the whole point.

Not in a year he won't be, at least not the kind of trade you mean.

When next summer (2012) rolls around, he will have a cap hold of $12.6 AND be a RFA and be someone who NBA teams might consider will want to play for a big-market, east coast team.

That severely limits his trade value and options.

I think you misunderstood the context. I was saying he was tradeable and thus you don't have to worry about his cap-hold interfering with signing free agents. I was not saying he was tradeable in the sense that he is not worth much--quite the opposite--because he's worth so much, you don't have to worry about being stuck with his cap-hold.

Players about to enter their free agency years have limited trade value, particularly high draft picks who haven't broken out into true stars yet.

Any team trading for him next during the summer or next season year knows they'll have just one year of his services before he's an RFA with a very large cap hold.

That's why you trade him this year for picks and/or players with more years of rookie contracts left if you're planning to use free agency to sign players.

spin it anyway you want.. Felton has a 3rd year. It was an option. Stop gap for 2 years UNLESS. Knicks could have kept him and extended him EVEN IF THERY WERE OVER THE CAP. Thats a GREAT option to have at a critical position.

Melo's age isnt a concern for me or the difference between Melo's age and the guys we gave up. The age issue was wirth Billups and the fact that we gave up 4 rotation players (starters) and one prospect for one player and one on the way out.

As for Melo being penalized because of our current seeding your joking right? Didnt we get Melo to be elite and compete with the other star studded teams in the east? I thought that was the point.

And cap space in 2012? Really dude? Go run the #s and get back to me.... I like Melo but his extension kills the 3rd star, it just does. And even if you wiggle it you have 3 stars and NO supporting cast which we are seeing in Mia does matter. Good bye Fields and anyone else. At that point Amare is 30 with his sug repaired knees. The timing doesnt add up.

You like to spin this trade like these things dont matter. They do. Alot. Trading the house for Melo has a downside. I fully expect us to be elite this time next year and competing for a title. I like Melo and want this to succeed. Yes he's a Diva, but he's OUR diva. This trade was made to win a title. We could have competed and made the playoffs just fine with the very deep, young and improving team we had.

I am pro Melo. I always have been. Not at the price we paid, but life goes on. Hopefully we does what we brought him to do

i'd be shocked if Gallo or Wilson's professional careers ever surpassed Chauncey's either... i been done telling everyone weeks before the trade that Chauncey was still ballin' & all he's been doing is averaging over 23 ppg since he got here... the Knicks clearly got the 2 best players in that trade by far i don't see what there is to lament over... i dunno about anyone else but i have more faith in even Shelden Williams than i do in Timofey Mozgov as a player that will help us in the playoffs this year... we weren't going anywhere with the players we gave up in that deal & yet people act as if we gave up our future for a quick Melo fix & completely ignore every other piece we got in that deal... AC's a good role player too, hell i like all the role players we got back in that deal.

for me the only downside was having to take back Balkman's contract but whatever it's not a cap killer & he can fill some useful minutes if he has to... also not a fan of buying Corey Brewer out, but if fishlips can do the job in that role, screw it, let MDA play who he wants to play as long as they're effective for us... now that we have the legit 2 superstars to build around i can't complain, i think this team is in much better shape going forward than it's been since i've been watching basketball.

You don't trade players of Gallinari's ability in the HOPE of signing free agents.

This is where playing fan GM gets the best of people, the chain of transactions they imagine always fall exactly in the Knicks favor.

What if you trade or let Chandler/Gallo go, bypass Anthony and then fail to get another big free agent?

You make the best transactions available to you, not risky ones that need OTHER things to fall into place in order to justify.

My only point is that the assumption that we wouldn't have cap space in 2012 for one of the big three FAs is an unnecessary assumption to make. I never said I'd be certain to trade him and that it would be for any offer including a bag of peanuts-Obviously you have to evaluate the trade and make sure you're getting something worthwhile back.

Now are you asking what if you miss out on Melo, miss out on Deron, miss out on Paul, and miss out on Dwight? Look, no plan is risk free; that plan is a risk I'm willing to take and there are plenty of good 2nd tier FAs anyway and lots of trade advantages to staying under the cap if you don't sign max FAs.
