Ewing says Anthony gives Stoudemire co-star he never hadORLANDO – Magic assistant Patrick Ewing issued a little dig this morning, acknowledging he never had it as good as Amar'e Stoudemire in getting a chance to play with another superstar in Carmelo Anthony.
It was one of the themes of Ewing's glorious but championship-less Knicks run. They never found another superstar to play alongside.
"A great player. A great player,'' Ewing said of Anthony at the Orlando morning shootaround before the Magic host the Knicks Tuesday night. "New York hasn't had two bona fide superstars since Willis (Reed) and Earl (Monroe) and Clyde (Frazier). Those guys are two bona fide superstars (Stoudemire-Anthony).''
Asked who was the best player he ever played with Ewing said, "Second-best teammate? John Starks, Allan (Houston , Spree (Latrell Sprewell), Oak (Charles Oakley). But they're not Carmelo. They're not Carmelo.''
Ewing said he has lived to accept that he never had that great cast around him. The Knicks were one game away from a title in 1994 against the Rockets when Starks had one of his worst-ever shooting nights in Game 6, going 2-of-18 and 0-of-11 from 3-point range.
"I can't worry about that now,'' Ewing said. "I've been retired a 100 years. It feels like a 100 years.''
Ewing said Anthony and Stoudemire should have no problem coexisting.
"They both have to share it,'' Ewing said. " You can't worry about it. The city's big enough. There's enough spotlight to go around.''
With Chauncey Billups the third key piece, as the clutch veteran point guard, Ewing said the Knicks have become a formidable challenge.
"Everybody kept talking about him as a throw-in,'' Ewing said. "A throw-in. People overlooked him when he first started. He's played great games. He's won championships.''
Can they compete as a top dog in the East?
"Definitely. They have two great players,” Ewing said. “Before it was only one with some great perimeter shooters around them. Now they have two great players and good perimeter shooters around them. ''
The Knicks plan to have maximum cap space in 2012 and center Dwight Howard, Ewing's prodigy, will be a free agent.
"He's staying in Orlando,'' Ewing said. "He ain't going nowhere. I told him if he's going anywhere, I'm chopping his legs off. ''
Ewing looked at the throng of New York media around him and said at their practice court inside Amway Arena, "I haven't seen this many of you on the road in a while. Man, is it the playoffs?''
Not yet.
