Absolutely correct. They DID in fact. They just had to flip it or renounce.

I know what's confusing you.

Let's say instead of being a few hundred k over the cap, the Knicks were $11m over. They could have made the Minnesota deal and gotten a TPE for the difference, and USED that to bring in another player, despite being over the cap.

Again, this is why it's like the MLE, and why Cleveland can be near the cap ($52) but still have USE of their entire TPE they got for James.

The TPE and the cap space for Cleveland are somewhat independent in this sense, because at the time of the Miami trade, Cleveland was well OVER the cap.

But the Knicks are under the cap, so the space created by the Minnesota deal exists as a TPE, unless the Knicks renounce, either of which they need to do in order to absorb the Denver salaries.

And confirmed _ no Curry-sized $11.3M trade exception to Knicks from Minnesota. Traded him into empty cap space. Fill in your own joke here

This is correct, but inaccurately stated.

There WAS a TPE created. CBA rules mandate it.

Knicks just have to flip or renounce it.

So what's the bottom line -- Trade exception? 1st round pick? 2nd round pick? Nothing? What's up?

I didn't see this thread. Sorry. I posted this question though, and this is why I think they get it:

Do the Knicks get a trade exception? If the Knicks took back Melo and Chauncey's and everyone else's salaries, but didn't send Eddy Curry's fat contract back, doesn't this mean the Knicks get a trade exception? That would be pretty big?

Oh okay. That makes sense, because as far as the accounting is considered, both sides take back the same "salary" when an the exception is added to the side that takes back less salary

Why do they play with our hearts this way? The Exception was weird since we didn't get less salary than we traded, but no first round pick? Not even a second round pick? Come on!

Just read Denver got 4 exemptions plus one for Carmelo at $17 mil.

I wonder if the Rockets would want to have us pay Battier for the rest of the year and we give them $3 million

In easy to understand terms.

Knicks did get a trade exemption, but it was used to match the salaries of what we were receiving from Denver. Basically the same as if we traded Curry to Denver to match the salaries. Instead we basically gave Minny Randolph in order to eat Curry's contract so that Denver wouldn't have to eat Curry's contract and get under the luxury tax. With the trade exemption we got from Minny we used to complete the Denver deal.
