If this trade is really true, we can't wait to see if AZ is healthy enough to contribute. His contract is an expiring and if we can use our picks to ship him back out for value role players for our future, i think we must do it for a better chance at this years run and our future.

We can't trade our own 1st round pick because we did a 3 team deal with Wolves to acquire another 1st round pick or not?

I think we must add players like Peitrus and Barnes vs Miami
and
Bodies like Dalembert, Kris Humpries vs Celtics and Lakers.

since MDA preaches defense every game the problem is then the players... we need new players.

2'2s to toronto for their exception moved on to Clev with azu for Jamison sesions and their exception. use that exception on Dalembart.

that would net is a defensive C a6th man in jamison(also an ending contract next year and Sessions who will help with team speed either as a starting 2 guard or off the bench

we would need a massive second move then jell it together in 25 games. You HAVE to address C/defense and when you lose xchandler--that a big net loss off the bench no one we have is near as good. we need a replacement and bringing in Billups makes us slower and we need more punch off the bench again.

Waitaminute.

I thought the Knicks were building for a championship?

Jamison, Sessions and Dalembert is your solution to compete with Miami in the next 3-4 years?

for some reason i think they are better than Turiaf Walker and rautins

should i wait for Deron Williams Dwight Howard and Kevin Durant to jump on? we will have no assets to trade and no cap space--need to help the bench for this year and next NOW.

Melo should be enough to do that and Billups is smart enough and experienced enough to manage it in the most efficient way. Fields has been starting to not just take it to the rim, but also draw defenders and make smart plays. I'm guessing Melo and Stat being aggressive is going to be contagious.

I'm not saying this team would be good enough to beat the Heat but I think they would give them a scare.

Doubling down on a losing strategy is not the way to go. Right now we have youth, and cap space. If we lock in to the deal we will lose our cap flexibility and we will lose our upside for a team that only does one thing well, which is offense.

If Dolan is pulling the strings, we are all in big trouble.

Same was said of Miami.

Now I will totally grant you that Melo/Stat as a tandem are NOT as good as Wade/James, but they figured out how to co-exist.

People were convinced they couldn't. At 9-8, people were giddy about it.

Look what happened.

Difference here is that LBJ and Wade are both world class defenders. That is a HUGE difference. A Melo/Amare tandem with nothing else is much worse than the Heat situation. Also, Amare and Melo will be taking up more cap space than LBJ and Wade. How does that make us competitive with the Heat?

The cap space expires in in the summer of 2012.

Chandler is due for a raise this year.

Gallo, Felton and Fields the next.

When the NBA season tips off in October 2012, Knicks will not have cap space for the foreseeable future and their young core of Gallo, Chandler, Felton and Fields will no longer be underpaid. They will be veterans on veteran contracts.

And we know who the free agent players between now and then. Melo, Howard, Paul and Williams (and getting 'melo have give you the best chance of getting 2 of the 4).

I'll keep asking until someone answers.

What do you want the Knicks to do in the next 500 days if not 'melo?

The thing I see is that you want to load up with as much elite talent as you can get. You start with superior talent as evidence has shown that the best teams always have 2 or more Elite players. So no matter what anyone thinks about the cost and what happens to the defense, you simply MUST find a way to add another superstar to the mix.

In most every game we play, our offense gives us a boost and an edge. We get open shots all the time. Problem is that Felton, Chan and Gallo have not been consistently able to take advantage of those open shots. Now you plug Melo and Billups into those slots and things improve, cuz they're more consistent from game to game. That's got to be the plan cuz we know they aren't being brought in to defend. We're a better offensive team than most in the league and this deal makes us even better, so I can understand why they do the deal. Like it or not, this is who we are. This ain't the 90's Knicks.

He doesn't want to leave $20 million on the table by going the FA route.

For some reason everyone keeps forgetting that Melo wants his money. He's not gonna pass up on that. He wants to come here, but he also wants his money. We can't separate the two. This deal is likely gonna happen after the A.S. game Sunday, so we might as well get over the idea of overpaying. Dolan wants this to happen.

Is Melo that bad of a defender compared to Gallo & Chandler..this thread is blowing my mind..We are talking about Carmelo Anthony here..He single handily won a NCAA championship..takes his team to the playoffs every year with absurd stats. Dude is a Winner just like Amare is and shows up every night regardless of stage. Having two players on a team that can impose their wills, get to the foul line during playoffs plus total respect across the league. I like Gallo and Chandler as players but come on..This is very Homer like of people to think this is that much of an awful trade. Make it happen Donnie

The last 2 games we held each opponent to under a 100. There's really nothing wrong with Mike's defensive coaching. You have to have players buy in and give effort. We already know that we've got a lot of guys that don't defend all the time at the same level of intensity. When they do, the defense works very well. So it's not the strategy, it's the will of the players.

Does MDA teach players to go under the pick or not boxout or get their hands up on D? When the players fail to do these things its due to their own failings. Why doesn't Amar'e play harder on D? Why didn't Lee play harder on D? That's who they are as players. Coaches can't change that. Sometimes players are just physically limited like Mark Jackson, but often it's a mental thing. We have a lot of guys that aren't strong defensive players from a mental standpoint. Various coaches haven't been able to get them to be better defenders. Like Amar'e for instance. He got a lot of pub for defending harder last year, but to be honest he still wasn't that good. LB tried to get our players to defend and that didn't work either. That's why he wanted to change out the roster.

Still this team can play better on D than it's shown at times. Overall this team isn't as bad as it may seem when you look at the defensive stats. We're 20th in the league in overall Defensive Efficiency per 100 possessions. Meanwhile we're one of the best offensively. If this team can make a more concerted effort to play hard on D, like the last 2 games, they'll be in good shape. I think if the trade goes down, the team will be motivated to give effort. It may take some time to develop chemistry, but hopefully not too long.

I dont think our defense will be any worse quite frankly. Melo+Amare will be impossible to defend. The part of the trade I don't like is the Felton for Billups part. We need the PG to dicatate the pace of the game and I don't think that Billups can play quick ball at this point. It seems like we are setting up for Chris Paul down the line so I'm not that worried.

What you'll see is the Knicks roleplayers will seem a bunch better when we get consistent night in and night out scoring from Melo and Amare. Chandler and Gallo have been scoring a ton, but they've had poor streaks (like recently) where we haven't looked so good. Fields and Douglas will be good glue guys in the lineup with Melo and Amare.

This team isn't the worst in the league defensively. They have room for improvement and have shown that they can defend when they want to. It has nothing to do with Mike. The team is 20th right now and they have it within their power to get better. It's mostly about effort. In the last 2 games you saw that the Knicks pressed and pressured the ball more. They fought harder on the perimeter and made teams take tough shots. They can play better D and proved it. No one is expecting great D, cuz they're not built that way. But the goal is to play as hard as they can. If they do then they'll win games.

I know Amare will benefit because they cannot double and triple him at will but I don't know about Mozgov. Do you think Mozgov's game/stats will benefit if we get Melo?

You're wrong. D'antoni has every single bit of responsibility to take for this team's lack of defensive responsibility. All we hear is that stupid pace excuse he uses after every bad loss and how we didn't move the ball around the way we should have, which has NOTHING to do with defense.

What a terrible defense team we will have
