Its a chess game.

If all the reports are true and Melo is clueless than its really puts Denver in a bind.

If melo says no then what? We become the chimp and Denver is the Frog?

Is this really that simple? Would Prokhorov really put himself into a position to be humiliated without any assurances prior?

Petro 3.5
Brook 4.2
Brook Hold 5.25
Balkman 1.65

49.85

Maybe the Nets could move Balkman, Farmer but that would cost them. And the $49M does not include picks, cap holds for roster spots, prob push the $49M number up to ~$52. Maybe the cap in 2 years is $64M IF everything goes swimmingly for the league.

Nets still in tough spot to add second star.

They have 1 1/2 years. They probably could trade Outlaw also by adding a pick and/or throwing in $3 cash. We see that the Russian is serious about spending money; taking risks; and building a winning team.

They would have 1 year. And didn't the Nets just trade 4 picks? Where the heck are they going to get enough to trade a $7M contract for a player who is almost completely useless?

They'll have til the summer of 2012. But this is a minor point in this whole thread. I don't see the cap space a problem for the Nets to sign another star FA in 2012. Let's see what Melo says this weekend, and let's hope Dolan doesn't go ballistic and gut the entire team to get Melo.

I just put up the raw numbers to suggest that it would be VERY hard for them to sign a free agent with cap space. Why would you suggest otherwise?

I just want this to be over. Trading a full starting 5 + more for one player is the very definition of a starphuck. No thanks. Donnie, please hang on, don't let Dolan screw this up.
The new new core: Randle, RJ, IQ. Maybe Mitch. Future pick. Future trade. Future FA.

If the cap is $64 as u suggest in 2012, then all they have to do is trade Outlaw for an expiring and they are down to $43. That is not that difficult to do if they throw in cash and a pick. My understanding is that 2 of the 4 picks to Denver are for this year 2011, and the other 2 are for 2012. But the Nets had something like 5 picks (I am not sure of the exact number) so they would have 1 left plus their 2013 & 2014, picks, etc. If it meant they could sign CP3, they would get it done. It may not be perfectly easy, but they would get it done, IMO.

Melo just said that there is no meeting scheduled between him and the Nyets. (WFAN)

Billups just said he won't play for either NY team and will force his way to the Heat for the min salary.

This is the best scenario

Either Melo takes the deal or he doesnt

That way if he does not agree we offer a very small yet reasonable package chandler randolph or we wait until FA and get him for 0.

If he does we move on. Id like to see us get Frye Grant Hill and Sessions.

With the need to get bigger up front, why would you want to get softer with Frye and older with Grant Hill?

Id take Frye and Sessions for long term quality vets at positions of weakness. Grant Hill is still playing great and would be an awesome upgrade for the bench.

Let's count some of the reasons for a 'no'. 'No' NY it's still Jersey. 'No' Stat on the team. And the biggie- 'no' playoffs for this year not with a 17-40 record to overcome to get there.

How good are those picks New Jersey is offering? This years draft is not at all being highly spoken of. NJ is like 6th or something in draft order - in a weak draft. (Maybe very weak depending on the CBA).

If Melo goes to Jersey, first, he is a moron for going to such a terrible team, just so he can have a few extra million. I mean just look at how the big three got together. Second, as others here have pointed out, they are going to have trouble signing another star in 2012. Even if they get one, it's going to take a strong supporting cast (like what we currently have) to help Melo and Star get anywhere. Melo is already playing with a pretty good team and where have they gone? I just can't believe this is about a few extra million that Melo could make up for by just playing for the Knicks. "Me"lo he should be called...

I'm fine with not trading the team for Melo. Offer Chandler, a first (via AR), Curry and maybe some of our lesser players plus the Felton Hamilton swap (only cause I haven't been impressed with Feltons ball hogging.)

what will prokrohov do if he gets shot down again? sell the team? im sure the dude isn't used to taking no for answer.

melo doesn't want to play for the nets.. if he did, this would be done already.

Hahn also reports that the thing holding up Knicks deal is including Galinari. Depending on what else they want that would suck if he was the one that held us from getting Melo. DEPENDING on what else they want......

Melo is flexing his "No Extension to anyone but the Knicks" card. Suck it, Denver. Time to deal with the Knicks.

Regarding the 4 picks, just grabbed this from this article http://www.northjersey.com/sports/pro_sports/basketball/knicks/021811_Nets_Nuggets_reach_agreement_now_its_up_to_Carmelo_Anthony_to_say_yes.html

That’s one of the reasons the Nets are including four first-round picks to get Anthony. It’s the Nets' pick this year as well as the Lakers', which is protected 1-through-18, and Houston’s and Golden State’s next year. Both have varying degrees of protection so there is no guarantee the Nets would have used them next year either.

The picks will amount to crap, unless the protections wear off in time, but that won't help Denver anytime soon. 4 first round picks sound good, but upon further inspection, nada.

If the nets make that trade, there meager fan base will know that it was all about the $ (just get fans in the seats to see melo drop 50 in yet...another loss)

If donnie gives in to denver, without a counter offer that favors us or a mutual deal, he should get no extension(but dolan would think the opposite)

Im not giving up an entire starting five for 1 1/2 players (not even for MJ)..Injuries happen regularly in the nba, and depth along with stars help you over come that..

The celtic and lakers lost titles because of Perkins and Bynum being out with injuries, and had nobody to fill that loss..1999 finals Ewing goes down..think about it..

If it is about the money then why does Melo not just re-sign with Denver? I don't think Melo is signing this if this is all about the money.

If Melo goes to NJ then he is screwed. He will basically be throwing away at least 3yrs of his career, and he will get blasted for it.

Good deal for Denver though for there situation if they get to pull it off.

As for the knicks. I would start to look at Iggy by swapping Curry out. Then look to S&T Chandler for a quality F/C. Then target Freddette(spell with the pick we get from Minny and our own dangle Douglas as well).

With that said I don't see him looking to extend with the Nets

Problem for the Knicks is that if you let this go through, there's now another power team in the East and no big FA's to go after this offseason.

your really sweating a team built around Melo and Brook Lopez? Knicks are 10x better right now.

That deal is a joke. Lopez isnt half the player Nene is, so you have Melo, a 35 year old PG and garbage. No disrespect to Morrow but please... The Nets will be as big a powerhouse as the Brand/Iggy led sixers.

maybe im crazy (well i know i am) but my guess is that if donnie knew gallo would get the deal done he'd trade him. i suspect walsh has assurances from melo's camp that he'll only sign an extension with the knicks, therefore including gallinari would be pointless. just my guess though.
