Yes, because Carmelo would turn down signing in extension to play in Los Angeles with Kobe and Gasol.

& u know this because your sources tell u otherwise

all accounts in every news article i've read so far have Melo refusing to sign ANY extension unless he's traded to NY... his own agent has been reportedly telling other GM's that he will only sign an extension with the Knicks... but i guess your people on the inside have told u that he's willing to sign with the Lakers... gotcha.

The Lakers and Carmelo Anthony? Wouldn't count on it.

An ESPN report that the Lakers were in preliminary talks with Denver for the Nuggets' unhappy all-star forward was quickly rebuffed by the Lakers.

"What's out there is inaccurate," said a Lakers representative familiar with the negotiations.

The report said the deal would revolve around Bynum for Anthony, though a team source told The Times on Tuesday that the Lakers were unwilling to deal Bynum, the 23-year-old center who has been plagued by knee problems.

Bynum is considered the personal project of Lakers executive Jim Buss, the son of team owner Jerry Buss.

WojYahooNBA Adrian Wojnarowski
CAA lost its leverage to muscle NY into trade and $65M extension when NJ pulled out for Melo. Now, it wants NY to think LA's in chase.

This is yet another example of Broussard getting played by CAA. It will probably work on Dolan though.

The Nuggets have almost no leverage to force the Knicks to trade for Melo IF Melo is willing to wait it out until the summer. Donnie is smartly NOT caving to Denver's demands because he knows they will get more and more nervous heading into the trade deadline. Dolan is panicking because he's a fool.

The Nuggets have very little leverage, Melo has all the leverage to go wherever he wants in the summer. The Knicks have a fair amount of leverage because they have cap room in the summer and can wait to acquire Melo at the cost of not being able to re-sign AR or Wilson or Kelenna (or our boy Eddy).

CAA is trying to leverage the Knicks into panicking and making a trade because it ensures the extension and a payday for Leon Rose and it makes Worldwide Wes's representation of Warkentien look good.

The only one buying CAA's bluff is Dolan. Sigh.

NY will work trade on its terms but knows it can get Melo in free agency. Anyway, Jim Buss has made it clear within org: Bynum is staying.

Don't screw this up, Dolan. Be patient for once in your pampered life.

I think its Isiah who is buying it. Dolan has made it publicly that he is just an Isiah puppet

- Any picks we send to Denver would likely be just as low.
- Bynum has more trade value because he is a center. PG's, C's, and SG's who can shoot go for a premium.

C's with knee problems don't have trade value.

Odd? People here have a hard on for Camby and he is ALWAYS injured. Same goes for Oden.

Kaman is injured alot too. Bogut is injured alot too. Yao was often injured too. The list goes on and on.

great, besides Camby, you listed C's who are injured and never been traded. And none of whom really match the knee injury to Bynum.

Last time I checked none of them were rumored to be in a Carmelo deal. None of them are 23 either. Doesnt matter the issue the point in they miss games.

Kaman always had an assortment of issues that resulted in him missing games and he was a 20 and 10 center. Bogut has a bad back and migraines.

Bynum has trade value. Centers dont get traded because they are hard to replace. The same goes for PG's. I suppose you didnt notice how Horford and Noah never reached free agency.

on one hand C's with knee problems don't have trade value otherwise POR and HOU would drop Oden and Yao so fast and would prob try to get anything they could.

on the other hand C's that are healthy don't get traded. Thanks for pointing out the obvious for me.

Still amounts to this: Bynum doesn't have trade value.

Because it's $65 million.
Because it's Los Angeles, which is NY with a more historic franchise.
Because he will compete for a championship instantly.
Because it makes logical sense. This isn't the Clippers. This is the Lakers. He's not throwing all that away to have a chance to sign with the Knicks.

Per Hahn:

The closer Carmelo Anthony gets to becoming a Knick, the more resistance the Denver Nuggets are showing. After the Nets pulled out of trade talks for Anthony -- mainly because he made it clear he's not interested in signing a contract extension with them -- the Nuggets reached out to several teams around the NBA to attempt to generate interest in a deal before the Feb. 24 trade deadline. But the entire league at this point is aware that Anthony's first choice is New York, so there hasn't been much interest. A report by ESPN.com on Tuesday morning said the Lakers were in preliminary discussions with the Nuggets about a trade for Anthony that would likely send center Andrew Bynum to Denver. A person with knowledge of the situation said Carmelo-Bynum talks actually took place last summer and nothing materialized beyond the initial discussion. The Daily News reported that Lakers executive Jim Buss, son of team owner Jerry Buss who feels strongly about Bynum's potential, rejected such a proposal. The Los Angeles Times posted a story on it's website that cited a Lakers source calling the original ESPN report "inaccurate." The Knicks have had talks with the Nuggets regarding Anthony, with a reported offer involving the Timberwolves that would send Eddy Curry and Anthony Randolph to the Timberwolves, Wilson Chandler and Minnesota's first round pick and Corey Brewer to Denver. This is a markedly low return for the Nuggets for their four-time all-star forward, who recorded the second 50-point performance of his career Monday night in a loss to the Rockets. The Nets offer, which also involved a third team, the Pistons, included three first-round picks and rookie power forward Derrick Favors. But the Knicks offer provides for Denver something that, sources say, is very appealing to owner Stan Kroenke: immediate cash savings, with Curry's expiring salary, and Randolph's $2.9 million salary next season, going to the Timberwolves. Still, there is little doubt that the Nuggets want the Knicks to improve their offer and using the Lakers as a threat is one way to do it. The Knicks feel if Anthony will only sign an extension with them, then the Nuggets only have two options: accept their offer or hold onto Anthony through the trade deadline and risk losing him for nothing in free agency.

The man speaks the truth. We only need to back a few months , to the discussion we've had on this board, when the first Nets offer got them nowhere. It was obvious then, and its obviuos now.

Of course Bynum has trade value- good C's grow on trees? If they did Bynum and two 1's maybe that s more appealing to them.

this to me seems like a DEN leak aimed at trying to pressure the Knicks into giving up more assets to get Melo... unless Melo has had a sudden change of heart it has been known for months that he would only sign an extension w/NY, i don't see why he'd now sign off on signing with a team that plays on the other side of the country.

DEN is trying to play whatever cards they think they have left in this poker match, they're trying whatever they can to get other teams involved in these discussions in order to up the ante for the Knicks... Donnie has been smart enough not to fold into the pressure to give up all of our young assets to get Melo i don't see him suddenly folding his cards now... thank GOD he played this the right way & didn't listen to the know-nothing crackpots who said it would take gutting our roster to get Melo here.

Im not thanking god for Donnie, But I would infact thank Dolan!

I can thank "Goodness" for Donnie, and I deduct that Dolan is not linked with "Goodness" but if he hired Donnie then he gets credit for a good decision.

Lets just see how this all plays out. My thinking is We going to add a piece to the trade so I'll just wait on this. Still got over two weeks of this to go.

Denver should be combing the earth for a better deal but we have been thru all the parameters of this deal 1,000 times already.

Donnie is a gangsta! He's got ice water in his veins and he has the patience of a Nile Croc. He just waits and waits until the prey is right on top of him then he strikes. At this point you can't get nervous or fearful. Denver is in a tough spot. We just have to wait and see who wins this game of chicken. We have the option of a FA deal and Denver really can't take that chance to call Melo's bluff. Still I want this to be over with this month and I hope Denver doesn't get defiant just to spite us.

David Stern pushed Donnie hard on Dolan. This was several months after Stern made the comments about the Knicks being a "Not intelligently run organization" or something to that effect.

I give Dolan credit for willing to spend tons of money. I give him no credit for Scott Layden, Isiah Thomas and the constant chatter about his present and future influence with the team. If there was no truth to it he'd come out and say "We're friends, we talk but he does not and will not have an official capacity with this team". The chatter exists because he allows it to.

Nalod thinks if Dolan pushes too hard on Melo and Donnie thinks it hurts the team then I think Donnie goes by mutual consent.

It has been said many times that Donnie will do Melo deal if he thinks it does not hurt the team.

I read that as no "Starphuching"!

Donnie pays too much then no support and while it makes the knicks interesting they are not championship caliber without the assets to spend or trade for. Just my opinion.

Dolan has money, but he got no bling. I assume as long as Dolan and Donnie are aligned it works.

Another gift is on the way for the Lakers.
