Question to those who feel we should go after a big man instead of Melo (ie. Marc Gasol, Nene, or Perkins):
If those players don't put us over the hump and place us among the elite...how do you propose to add more talent to the team, or find a player of Melo's caliber? We're going to be maxed out with that lineup, since all those big men that people suggest we go after will cost us more than $10M/yr to acquire.
At that point, the only resources we'll have available are low draft picks, the MLE, or vet min signings. Or we can try and retool on the fly and swap talent for other team's garbage like Orlando did, but those options will always require us giving up pieces (like Chandler, Gallo, etc.) to improve.
The chance of us finding a player of Melo's caliber with those resources are damn near nil.
However, if we get Melo first, those same resources can net us a serviceable center. Dalembert or Pryz may be had for the MLE. Camby will likely sign for the vet min in 2012. Young center prospects routinely fall in the draft that end up being a solid NBA contributor -- guys like Ibaka, DeAndre Jordan, Hibbert, McGee, or even ironically Marc Gasol (2nd round pick), Perkins (late 1st), and Dalembert (late 1st). We might even have something with Mozgov and/or Jerome Jordan already if we have the patience to develop them.
So I really don't understand this constant pining for a $10-13M center that's going to lock us in the current roster, when there's a big-time player like Melo who is available at a wholesale price. We get the second star first, then you fill in the role players.
