He has the most leverage out of anyone UNLESS there's a team willing to give a ton of assets to Denver without him having to sign a contract. The only team I can think of that might be willing to take him on without an extension would be Orlando....but even that seems crazy/impossible.

Assuming that the pre requisite to a deal for the team receiving Melo is that he signs a contract, Melo can chose what he wants to do. He can guarantee himself the money and go to NJ or he can take a chance and wait until he gets his wish to go to the Knicks. His people have to be telling him "yes, it's a a bit of a risk to wait for a deal to the Knicks, but it's still a very good chance you'll end up there by February if you want to be patient". If it gets to February and it's clear he's not willing ot go to NJ, Denver will be incredibly stupid not to take what the Knicks are giving. That's why I think if Melo makes it clear to them soon that he wants to go to the Knicks it would be in their best interest to get a stronger package from teh Knicks now than a weaker one at the deadline. All this talk about Denver not wanting to deal with the Knicks out of principle is for the public and press. They're dealing him no matter what.

It's all up to Melo. Take the money and go to your 2nd choice or wait for the money and OWN NYC.

And look Carmelo gave them 7 years of his life. Why can't they forfill his wishes. Look New York can show him how he can make that money back.

What's in it for Denver? They have a multi million dollar franchise to run.

I don't believe that our future chances of becoming a Contender are solely tied to whether we can add Melo or not. It's one way we could improve, but not the only way we can get to that level. Melo coming here likely wouldn't improve our chances this year due to the cost of adding him. That move would be with the next 4 years in mind and not so much this season. A big trade for Melo to this team which isn't currently a contender doesn't push us up that far IMO. Now in the off season we would have to make some additions that could then take the Melo/Amar'e/Felton core and make it deep enough to contend. This is all fantasy now, given the desire to deal with NJ that Den has.

The thing is that it's more realistic to start thinking in terms of other moves we can make to improve the team where we are weak. IMO some small moves could actually improve the teams chances this year, to go further in the Playoffs. Backup PG is the most pressing need since we don't have anyone really that can help at that spot right now. The cost should be within reason as well. Then of course we have to find a big somewhere that a team is willing to move for not too much. Hopefully with more days off between games, Turiaf can heal and be more helpful. We keep developing Timo and AR and see what happens there. Maybe after the new year AZ gets into the mix. It's not as rock solid as adding Melo, but this is the reality of where we are now if Den and NJ make this deal.

It depends on what you mean by future. We either need another super star on this team to compete against Miami for the next several years OR we need to assemble a team that plays great ball on offense and is able to make timely stops. You have to accept the fact that with D'Antoni you're always going to give up a ton of points, but as long as the spread is good you should come out on top most of the time. In this system we need scorers and hustle role players to bear down in crunch time. We're never going to assemble a team like Detroit had when they beat the Lakers. If we don't get Mello we can still be a good team but I think we need 1 more stud to be a legit contender. It's just not going to happen for us with Amar'e plus filler. You have Ewing's Knicks all over again (except a high octane offense rather than a great defensive unti), as another poster said.

It is very much tied to Melo. It was suppose to be LeBron but now it is tied to Melo. Every player you want to add to the Knicks not named Melo would require a learning curve a Learning curve that will leave Amare old and done. You can talk about Mayo but he has a learning curve, Chandler, Gallo these guys are another 3-4 years away before they really put it together. As a fan I don't know if I want to take the chance on basically using up Amare with nothing to show for it. Besides what player of Melo's caliber is available that has the experience of big games and at the same time the experience of holding his own vs other superstar players. Its a very hard deal to make because I really like Gallo, Chander and Fields but I have to get Melo here as he holds the better chance at the championship no ifs and but about it in my mind.

You have to allow the learning curve and even if you did add Melo, there's no guarantee that the team is in the ECF's. This notion that you add Melo and this team is a lock to contend isn't true. We might still face some obstacles in filling holes on the roster. So my thinking is that we continue to develop our young studs and look to fill holes with guys that at the least can give us a significant boost and improve the depth of the rotation.

Nothing is automatic tho adding a proven star is as close to that as you can get. So I understand that addig Melo would be a big deal. I also think we can improve our chances with some good additions in the right spots. We'd be a lot more competitive with the right help at C and PG/SG. Again we're talking about adding to the nucleus we have and not taking away from it.

for Melo to accept a deal to NJ there has to be a significant amount of talent going there to accompany him... they must be cooking up 1 helluva group bukkake trade.

Melo should understand "legacy" cuz in Syracuse he has it.

In NY he could. He has to risk some money. Ok, its a lot of money.

Maybe the CBA is not kind and its not going to be that much money.

BUt he has to risk somthing. Maybe thats what makes true superstars what they are. A sociopath focus on winning and success. Melo might be just a regular adjusted married guy who enjoys his life and wants to live in NYC "if it all fell into place". But if not, He can live with Jersey for 18 mos, after all, he'll have his money.

Not Jordan "I MUST WIN! PLAY THRU PAIN, SICKNESS! DEATH, ANYTHING!" Jordan was a sick puppy. Dude was wired to COMPETE. Really, not many dudes like that. Kobe is like mostly like that. Few are dedicated to team, city and even family. Dudes like Duncan seemed to enjoy the balance in SA.

What this team can do?

You will have enough. Get Melo and Amare teamed up. Then take it from there you will see how quickly this team fills up with needed talents. You would still have a decent bench which MDA waon't use all he needs is a 7 man rotation maybe he gets forced to use AR, Walker, Williams, Rautins, Mozgov, Mason into the rotation. Probably get a player back from Denver with roster spots open can always pick up players. I'm not worried about role players they will come. Build the foundation and role players come.

I dont buy it. He has all the cards. He makes tons more money in endorsements, if money is his concern. He also comes to a better team, in a better market. 15 million in this regard is really chump change. He wont be getting a 15 million bump playing in the meadowlands. When they were going to the finals they couldn't fill up the arena.

Van Gundy on whether it makes sense.

Obviously both sides have a logical argument. It could go horribly wrong either way. Nothing to do but wait and see

Let's try to elevate the level of discourse in this byeetch. Please
