Steve Francis' team ordered to criticize him
Globalization was always going to be a "feeling out" process.
Steve Francis has been a disappointment for his Beijing team, and has even gotten into trouble with the League's office for reportedly making a rude gesture from the bench.
But whereas in the NBA, David Stern's staff might fine or suspend Francis for such a thing, in the Chinese Basketball Association, the league has, according to the Agence France-Presse (via HoopsHype) ordered his Beijing team to, among other things, "educate and criticize" Francis for his uncivilized behavior.
Let's just take the report's word for it that Francis has been a miserably bad employee thus far this season. Nevertheless, when you read that, don't you just think: Wow, that's not how we handle things in the U.S.A. Here, that kind of public humiliation by an employer is asking for lawyers and all kinds of other stuff to be involved. We just do not do that.
I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who would love to see players treated harshly and ripped apart publicly.
Not me. The NBA fails at this in various ways from time to time, but I'm thankful that, generally, efforts are made to preserve players' dignity. And I hope that, as basketball becomes becomes an increasingly global game, the NBA's approach prevails.
Because I don't want to live in a world where employers criticize and reeducate their employees as a matter of course. There are better ways.
what is acceptable in other cultures doesn't have to be acceptable in ours & vice versa... there are things that are regularly portrayed in the media in the States that more conservative cultures consider to be highly obscene & rude... we as Americans need to realize our own sense of morality & behavior codes don't apply when we go to other countries & we need to be respectful of that... when we go to live & work in another country, we have to live by THEIR rules & their way of doing things... behaving like a moron & flipping the bird during a game, while it may not be all that big of a deal in US society, is completely unacceptable in Asian culture... publically disrespecting someone else will subject you to harsh repurcussions

then i would suggest he not move to China, because that's how they do things over there... making offensive gestures off the bench is tantamount to a loss of face for the entire franchise, which is never taken lightly in Asian culture... you are expected to conduct yourself with a certain sense of decorum, professionalism & humility when you are an employee of a company in Asian countries... you are considered an embassador & representative of the company that employs you, & there are certain expectations & responsibilities you are expected to live up to just like there are in any company in any country you work for... i used to work for a Korean company in Jersey & the owner was from the old school... used to make every employee do excercises in the front yard before work to get our blood going at 5 in the morning & foster more team spirit within the company... it was a pain in the ass for me & i hated doing it, but no one was twisting my leg to work there either... if i didn't like how he wanted to do things, i could have easily quit my job & gone to work someplace else.
Steve Francis being disciplined by his own team in this manner because of his own idiotic behavior is their way of saving face... there's absolutely nothing wrong with it & Francis should have enough respect for another country's culture & ways of doing things to know better than to act like a fool... if he doesn't like it, i'm sure there are some Turkish teams or other countries that might be looking for washed up NBA vets like him.
I used to work for cash for Hungarian Ortodox Jew in Brooklyn in metal shop.
He has his all relativs working for him as accountants, secretary, and shop managers.
They were screeming and throwing staplers at each other all day long.
It was a bunch of Russians and illegal latinos from every corner of South America working in the shop and drinking afeter work tekila and vodka coctails.
Cool multicutural mess...
