So is this the part where we have to talk about how awesome Gallo is despite the topic having nothing to really do with him?

Weren't you the one that compared Gallo to Budinger? If it had nothing to do with the topic, don't make the ungodly awful comparison. Or at least characterize Budinger correctly: Gallo-really-lite.

don't you mean Brian Scalabrine-ultra heavy?

LOL, that comparison is much more appropriate before we start lumping this kid with one of the best ball players to ever grace a court. Gallo would have a hard time fulfilling Keith Van Horn's career let alone approach anything Bird did on the court.

i dunno if you were around these forums last year, but even a scrub like Sergio Rodriguez was referred to as Nash Lite... Knick fans tend to get overly excited about their players at times... Gallo's a good young player, but nowhere even in the same universe as Larry Bird.

I wasn't around back then but I definitely know what you mean. That type of over-estimation can be found throughout our fanbase, no matter the forum. It's almost humorous because we disparage other players and then tout those same players when we get them. Remember the Amar'e is not appreciably better than David Lee comments this offseason? Now we're in the midst of the Melo is not appreciably better than Gallo comments (which is more ludicrous because at least Lee was an all-star). I love our players but I'll never lot those sentiments get in the way of the truth or what is best for the team.

Gallinari: 15.1ppg, 4.9rpg, 1.7apg, 0.9spg, 0.7bpg in 33.9mpg and on 42.3% shooting/38.1% (3FG%)
Budinger: 8.9ppg, 3.0rpg, 1.2apg, 0.5spg, 0.2bpg in 20.1mpg and on 44.1% shooting/36.9% (3FG%)

Extrapolate those numbers out so they are getting the same minutes, and I think its clear that Budinger matches Gallo's production and exceeds it in some respects. If you were to ask me to choose the better of the two players, I'd choose Gallo (not by very much) but if you wanted me to choose between having Eric Gordon and Budinger OR Gallinari and Douglas, Eric Gordon and Budinger wins everytime.

that was a serious exageration.

you get a for the good of the game tech call.

i like Budinger a lot... would have been nice to pick him up in the draft cuz i think he'd be 1 of those great character, smart players who people grow to love, just like Landry Fields... watched him a lot at Arizona & he's got some serious athleticism & would be a fun player to watch in this uptempo style game that utilizes perimeter shooters... he's a lot more athletic & quicker getting up the floor than Gallo, but Gallo is probably the better long distance shooter & a better defensive player, but Budinger's no slouch in the jumpshooting department either.

Honest question, besides shooting (free-throw shooting as well), is there anything that Gallo does that you'd say he is proficient in? He doesn't rebound particularly well from his position, does a piss-poor job of getting to the line, has no penetration game to speak of (doesn't even have a pull up jumper off a drive), is an alright position defender but below average man defender. What is it that this guy does that has you thinking he's anything more than the 2nd coming of Vladimir Radmanovic?

Agreed on all counts. Although I wouldn't call him adept at putting the ball on the floor (because he has no counter move or ball-handling ability to gain separation) but I do think he's also better than Gallo at penetrating due to that athleticism of his.

that's what happens when you let sentimentality get in the way of reason... the difference that a player like Melo can make on a franchise goes way beyond stats & efficiency ratings... a player that can play a central role in bringing a 17 win team back to the playoffs & stay there ever since is somehow not capable of improving our franchise, but an unproven kid like Gallo who has played on horrible lottery teams in NY over the past 2 years before Amare & Felton got here is somehow the missing piece for our championship aspirations... everyone knows Knick fans love Gallinari, i do too, but let's try not to let that blind us to reality.

i agree, he's not an adept ballhandler... i just think he's better at getting up & down the floor, probably better suited for an uptempo style game than Gallo is based on his athleticism alone.

there are quarters in games where gallo is a human highlight reel, from the paint to the arc. the rub on him, he is not consistent. when he has his beast quarters, i would love for him to be rewarded by making him the first offensive option. who knows maybe it will be a confidence builder that leads to more beastly quarters.

Wow. You can almost sense the amount of distorting you put through in your posts with regards for Gallo. Some of what you just typed in is flat out wrong and ridiculous.

The system that we play in gives players plenty of opportunities to be "human highlight reels" and it's not like Gallo is some talentless bum. He's had a few plays like that half-court ally-opp from Felton in the Heat game and the reverse dunk in the Celtics game that looked pretty but stuff like that doesn't happen for Gallo unless it occurs off a chink in the opponents defense. The mark of any "untouchable" on a team is their ability to do those things when defense's are zeroing in on them. Barring those lapses in defense, Gallo scores his points through jump shots and the off chance he gets a player off-balance to draw a foul. Don't get me wrong, I like the kid but I just don't buy into the hype machine that says he's some core player for a contender, now or ever.

I completely agree. The athleticism is probably the biggest problem for Gallo in this system. I've started to think of him as a 4 and no longer a 3. Gallo is actually a pretty talented player (which had me apart of the Toni Kukoc Jr.-hype club during his first season) but his lack of athleticism for a 3 hurts him. Unfortunately for Gallo, he has Amar'e at the 4 spot and has Chandler backing him up. So like Jay-Z said "on to the next one..." I do think Gallo could still be a serious threat if he embraced being a 4 and developed a post-up game ala Keith Van Horn; which would allow him to have a very Keith Van Horn-like career (which was fairly impressive contrary to the critics).

The kid gets about 5-6 free throw shots a game. That is piss poor for someone people have masquerading around as some star-to-be, especially when they are getting 35mpg.

I do not think Gallo has a talent issue. He has an aggression issue. When he turns it on, he kills people. Problem is, we only see that for certain games. Usually, when someone is talking trash to him.

Let me list some players who also get 5-6 a game this year:

- Monta Ellis
- Ginobili
- Dirk Nowitski
- Pau Gasol
- Bosh
- Paul Pierce
- Derrick Rose
- David West
- Danny Granger
- LaMarcus Aldridge
- Chris Paul
- Andrew Bogut
- Steve Nash
- Joe Johnson

On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being stupid and 10 being very stupid, how would you rate yourself?

This is a critical question, answer it incorrectly and I'll lock you for being incredibly stupid.

I'm no Gallo fan and would easily give him up for Melo, but 5-6 FTA's for his usage rate is actually very, very good. With that said, he really only gets FT's cause he's so awkward (yet effective) in his drives that it's just begging for defenders to reach in. However, lately, it's come to the point that Gallo expects the whistle and instead of trying to finish, he just chucks up a wild, ugly shot, then looks around for the ref. If defenders play Gallo straight, he becomes ineffective.

Again, I don't think anyone is questioning his talent. Like I just said "Gallo is a pretty talented dude." That doesn't mean that his skills are well-suited for the role we have him playing in. As a 3, much of Gallo's skill becomes moot because his athleticism (or lack thereof) prevents him from executing. I think he's become better suited to the 4 where he'd be better able to gain separation from his man off the dribble and off motion. He has solid court sense (hence me crediting him with a high bball IQ earlier) and I could see him being crisp at making passes out of the post and to cutters. The only problem is that D'Antoni has not forced the guy to develop a post game. If he were to do that, I think Gallo would be much better equipped to fulfill that potential that made him the 6th pick in the draft. As it stands now, however, Gallo is not much better than Chase Budinger as a 3.

granted he does do that and if a defender just got out of gallo's way when he is doing that, it would be an easy turnover. but gallo has shown an ability to finish to the rim with two hands. get out of his way doing that, and its an easy two. need to set gallo up for those easy two on the wing, where he fakes out his defender like he going for a three then runs past defender for a dunk.

I agree with this. I always considered Gallo to be an average SF in this league, but if he can make the transition to PF (he needs to beef up, and play solid post defense, instead of the acting job he normally does with flailing arms and flopping), then his ball handling and athleticism become an advantage. Even then though, a Gallo/Amare frontcourt just seems like a sieve defensively, and I'd rather not build a roster with that frontcourt in mind. And since Amare is our $100M man, Gallo (or Chandler) is the odd one out to go in a Melo trade.
