let me ask you then, what separates him from someone like Kevin Durant, who by your own definition is also a 1 dimensional player that is incapable of doing anything else very well & wasn't able to even get his team to reach the playoffs until his 3rd season in the NBA & was eliminated in the 1st round? if he were available you wouldn't want the Knicks to get him either?

everyone focuses on Melo's inability to get his teams deep into the playoffs other than 1 year... name me ONE franchise player in the NBA that has been to the playoffs every single year he's been in the NBA other than Tim Duncan... it took Dirk Nowitzki 3 years to get the Mavs into the playoffs... it took Lebron James 3 years before he got the Cavs to the playoffs in a MUCH weaker Eastern Conference & he had Carlos Boozer to play with... hell, not even Shaquille O'Neal or Amare Stoudamire have been able to get their teams to the playoffs every single year they've been in the league, but somehow Melo gets zero respect for doing it... i don't get it.

DEN 111 ORL 94

Melo 35 pts / 11 reb / 2 ast against an elite team in the East last night... not too shabby.

Are you kidding me? Nets contenders with Melo. LOL.

i don't know what's so funny about that... Melo took a 17 win Denver team to the playoffs his rookie season.

I live in Denver and have seen Melo play his whole career here. But don't take my word for it. All the more astute basketball people
in Denver acknowledge that Melo can do one thing and that is score. However, he is incapable of doing ANYTHING else very well. He is
strictly a one dimensional player who has been incapable of taking his team deep into the playoffs despite numerous opportunities. The
Nuggets have had a lot more talent than the Nets have. You put him on a bad Nets team and they won't improve that much.

that’s exactly what my buddy in denver has telling me for years. i think he's watched every one of melo's nba games. at the end of every year he always uses the word "selfish" to describe him and says he'll never lead denver any further than where they get to each year. he's wanted him traded for quite a while now.

it's not that different form the lee situation last year. i'm sure fans on boards all over the place were saying here's a guy giving you 20 and 12 every night on 55% shooting, 80% from the line, and 4 assists?? we'd be CRAZY to not get him! pencil those figures in every single night for the next 6 years compared to the production we're getting from ___________ at that position!!!!

versus watching him every game and knowing you’ve got a sieve on defense and you’re ready to let go of his other contributions to move on.

Durant defends extremely well.

Melo is not interested in defense. He is a decent rebounder though. If we took Gallo out of starting lineup and put Melo in, we'd lose a lot of defense. And our best outside shooter in the starting lineup, which would make spacing difficult. It would basically turn Wilson Chandler into a guy who had to camp in the corner and wait for outlet passes.

Don't act like Melo didn't have help in Denver, Marcus Camby won defensive player of the year twice out there. Iverson was there averaging 25ppg for a few years. Melo didn't make it out of the first round until Finals MVP Billups came over to Denver.

Melo is an ELITE scorer. He is mediocre at everything else. Dominique Wilkins took the Hawks to the playoffs every year until he was 30. One of the great scorers of the 80s. But didn't do much else. Best comparison to Melo in my mind.

I think if we had Ewing and Oakley - you add Melo in a heartbeat. With the team we have now - does Melo really make sense?

An excellent question. It seems absurd to me.

Maybe 2011 first rounders have been devalued because of the upcoming lockout? It will be a weak draft this year if underclassmen think it will be a lockout. They'll just stay in school.

one for TWill and one for taking $5M contract of Laker player (who saves LAL $10M cause of luxury tax and gives them extra big man in Joe Smith).

If Melo was going to be a Net, he would be already. A deal has been on the table since preseason. The acquired picks by the Nets help them in terms of building their young team but does nothing, IMO, to help them get Anthony because he simply doesn't want to go there.

I think the Knicks are better with Melo than the Nets would be. Plus, the Nets won 12 games or so last year and are on thier way to another below 20 win season. They hardly look enticeing to Melo at all, not to mention they are the seond citizen in town. If we were losing like last year, then I would be a little concerned because I think thats what cost us Lebron last year. If we played last year, like we are doing this year, Lebron might be a Knick. At this point in his career, Melo is not going to a team (at least I dont think) that he feels needs a few more years of rebuilding before they might be a contender. Harris might be involved in a deal to get him, leaving Brook Lopez and Melo in tow. Forget the Celts, Heat, Magic, spurs and Lakers, but I think the Knicks are just as good if not better than that proposed Nets team.

Also, lets not forget, STAT and Melo are good friends. That should count for something especially when you see what happened in Miami.

Can melo if a knick share the ball in a non-iso based offense. Melo had Iverson for a while.

Melo as a franchise savior he is not.

Melo is an upgrade over Chandler.

don't you think it's a mistake to make those kind of judgments based on 1 game? what decisions would you have made at 3-8 that differ from the ones you'd make at 16-9?

Yup. All you Danilo Gallinari fans will finally see (I hope) why he is not a starting SF on a good team after playing against Paul Pierce and LeCon and why we NEED Carmelo Anthony if we're ever going to reach elite status.

Are you implying that we need Melo because he is a much better defender than Gallo is?
Paul Pierce did a # on Kobe in their first finals meeting. Does that mean the Laker needed an upgrade at his position?
I don't get what you're trying to say..or the logic of what you're saying.

Is it "If Lebron or Pierce goes off against your team, you need to upgrade your SF" ?? Because those guys are capable of going off against pretty much anyone. Wilson Chandler went off against Denver..was that Melo's fault?

What exactly are you trying to say?

If you've been listening to the conversation about Melo it's not about whether Melo is better than Gallo. Obviously he is. That's why he gets paid the max.

The conversation has been about which of these is better:

$16-$20 M for 6 years on Melo

or

Whatever $ we spend on Gallo + whatever help we get with the leftover cap space.

It's a tough question to answer and can be at time fun to discuss. Let's try to keep the conversation above "Hey stupids. Gallo sucks. Look at what Pierce did. Melo is so much better!"

Let's try to elevate the level of discourse in this byeetch. Please
cheers

i didnt get the all in on melo till papabear posted that (locked) thread. i wish both new york ball clubs luck. how cool will it be for ny to have two legit franchise players, playing here. the knickerbockers and the brooklyn ballers are going to turn this city into the basketball mecca once again. good. cause baseball bores me to sleep.

we have Amare... that's a start... u get the stars first & worry about the role players to surround them with later, not the other way around... & go ahead & look up the roster Melo walked into in DEN his rookie season... he had ZERO stud offensive talent around him on that team... he WAS their offense... Andre Miller & Voshon Lenard were the other leading scorers on that team with 14 a night, & Nene wasn't nearly the player he is now... on the Knicks, he'd have a legit stud frontcourt mate in his prime in Amare as well as Ray Felton & likely Landry Fields to play with... that's a much better surrounding cast than the one he had in DEN that year... if adding him to that DEN team could have such a big impact i fail to see how it couldn't have an even bigger impact in NY considering the players he would have alongside him.

i agree it's not that different from the Lee situation last year... there were fans that felt we'd be better off just re-signing Lee to a contract extension & using the remaining cap space to sign another FA instead of using it all up on a guy like Amare, who many felt was not someone who was interested in playing any defense, who wouldn't be able to carry a team on his own w/o Steve Nash, & whose contract would kill our flexibility to make any deals in the longterm future & wouldn't be worth it... a lot of the same "logic" being applied during the debates this past summer against the idea of targetting Amare as there is being applied right now against the idea of targetting Melo.
