I am all about the Knicks too but shutting thee discussions down is not going to achieve anything. Living in denial has never helped anybody. This is basketball forum and in general we should be talking hoops and not racism, but its also a bunch of regular people who interact daily with each other through this message board. To say such interaction will be devoid of friction may not be realistic.

Like TMS I am asian too, I didn't grow up here but migrated to the US in my late 20s and like he points out had to face my fair share of ingrained racial taunts and slurs.

But to me the real problem with racism is not the fringe people who are making derogatory comments its the more mainstream otherwise decent people who are completely clueless about other cultures and what may or may not be offensive towards them. These people are not racist but may be insensitive towards the meaning and nuances of what they are saying and may not have the capacity/flexibility to understand why its hurtful. Those are the types of arguments that cause a lot of misunderstanding and Cosmic was a good example of that. I don't believe he said what he said with the intent to hurt somebody but wasn't able to understand what was wrong with it when it was repeatedly explained to him. Does that qualify as racism? In my opinion it is a case by case thing, but the impact is much the same.

Regardless if TMS believes he is a racist!

I personally don't believe that Cosmic is a racist at all....

Just made a poor choice of words and like Jimmy the Greek he has been condemned!

If a newbie comes along and start posting incredibly stupid stuff, we don't hesitate and lock the person right away, no warning necessary (cause they just dont get it from the start). I think it's fair to say that long time posters get a lot more slack; it's hard to interpret sarcasm, all-in-fun ball busting, etc and we all slip up from time to time.

Hey, we all want a place where we can enjoy some banter, right?

Often times posters may not realize they just posted something that is offensive and others will tell them about it, it's their reaction to that that is key. Moving along in a way that does not upset is probably best, explaining point of view doesn't hurt, acknowledging the other side of viewpoint is bold (in a good way). Ranting on and on about being completely right in the face of a LOT of other people mentioning otherwise and then calling others dickheads is probably not the best way to treat a community that you interact with; there should be normal human commonsense decency.

i didn't want to comment anymore on the topic but do NOT make this out to be TMS being the one that got Cosmic banned... he got himself banned w/his poor choice of words & defiance & throwing further insults at people who took offense to it... i was not the only one who took offense, several other posters did too... so please, enough with this "Regardless if TMS believes he is a racist" bullcrap... unless u know how it all went down, then it's probably best to drop the topic & let the moderators decide when or if he ever returns... all he's got to do is apologize & acknowledge he made a poor choice of words... for the record, no one accused him of being a racist when he made that comment necessarily, only that the comment he made was offensive to people of Asian descent... he obviously didn't give a crap... so ask me if i give a crap that he got his dumb ass banned from this site, & i'll say i don't.
