After blowing a 21-point lead and allowing a single player to have the first 31-31 in 20 years, yeah, I guess the idea of firing this coach is just overreaction and we should give this guy the whole season to work his magic.
Im sorry but the denial some of you are, Im waking up from it. As Knicks fans we've come to appreciate grit and hard work on the defensive end. We've stood up for ovations to players giving their heart on the floor and we love coaches that preach that. I knew D'Antoni wasn't gonna bring any of this, but since he still had success in Phoenix and we had been so terrible, I gave him a chance as a fan. Everyone mentioning his lack of defense would make me defend him mildly, because at the end of the day I would know defense wins in this league and we would be low on that. Mike is an offensive mastermind and that could prove better than any defense I would crave.
But even Mike's system has come to question the last few seasons. When you simply work offensive plays to get three-point shots, not working penetrations or post moves or solid mid-range opportunities, especially with the game on the line, AND you don't defend your heart out, you will lose game after game as the Knicks are showing. We will win another game this season, probably a few, but it will probably happen when we are so hot from downtown the opponent wont matter. But that won't happen consistently because we don't have the personnel and even with it, thats not winning basketball.
So we will have games where we lead most of it, maybe even have big leads. All while the long range is hot. But after that, we will be routed, either making the final score look respectable or an embarrassment. But in the end, it will be another loss. Last few games we've been routed, either the whole game or from a certain point forward. We've lost. And while the talent may not be all-star worthy, it sure isn't as bad as it has shown.
We may get on a small winning streak and at least for me it won't change this thought: we will never become a playoff contender, not even less win a championship, with this coach and his style. Mike has lost me as a fan for good. He cold care less, but more fans will come to realize this and show their displeasure at home. And it will be a familiar sight for the Knicks: team in disarray, losses mounting, and fans chanting for the head coach's firing.
