I think the Hornets just did very well for themselves getting Curtis Jerrells from San Antonio for a future 2nd round pick. He should slide right into that vacated Darren Collison backup role and provide good insurance if CP3 still isn't 100%. Nice move..If Monty gives him the playing time he's gonna surprise some people..The dude's got skills..I wonder if we ever had any interest in this guy. I wonder if Knick management even knew he was available. There's a guy I would prefer to have as my last guy over Ewing Jr. or S. Williams, but that's just me.
I agree with some on this board who are concerned about our overall point guard play and rebounding. Along with establishing some cohesion and familiarity with each other (which is probably gonna take longer than I thought), those seem to be the biggest issues. The thing is, barring a blockbuster trade, I think we pretty much have our squad right now, sink or swim. We have our centers with Moz & Turiaf and we have our PGs with Felton, Douglas and possibly Rautins.. At this point, I think if we want to add to that depth and sure up those positions further (which for some reason I bet we don't right now) we should go for a low risk (low cost)/high reward type of player -- the type of player that could have a chance to rectify some of these early weaknesses with the last roster spot over PEJ & Shawne Williams (PEJ & Shawne Williams have some talent but let's face it, they are basically a waste to carry on this roster --- with that final roster spot I'd much rather have a specialist that could come aboard & identify/impact one of these early team flaws if need be rather than a guy that's there to carry the luggage). I think that's more important and I'd like D'Antoni to have that option..However I don't think we're looking to add anything else right now as far as a small time upgrade like that goes...This is it, I think they feel like they have the depth issue covered..Unless it's for a major/obvious upgrade like a Carmelo Anthony, this is it. Not sure that's the right approach -- we should always have our heads up in the front office looking at small things to do in addition to the bigger splash moves.
Again rebounding and PG play:
Take a chance on Patrick Mills - the man has nice ability & upside for a PG..Offer Portland a 2nd rounder or Rautins for him (preferably a future 2 -- I still wanna see more of Rautins before he's written off). I would've taken a chance on a guy like Curtis Jerrells if I knew he could've been had for a 2nd rounder. Mills & Jerrells in particular are exactly the type of low cost/extremely high reward players in this league that intrigue me (either guy has a chance to be a very good PG in this league if ever given the opportunity---possibly a guy that could emerge as an upgrade over anything we have right now, Felton or Douglas)..Maybe offer a 2nd rounder to Toronto for Joey Dorsey to address the early rebounding issue...Pick up the phone and see what the pricetag is for DeAndre Jordan, if the Clips would even be interested in trading him. Give Indiana a call and see if Josh McRoberts or Tyler Hansbrough are available, maybe AJ Price as well. Stuff like that. You're talking about guys that address some early weaknesses on this club -- guys that wouldn't expect too much for themselves (they wouldn't necessarily expect to come here and start) or cost us too much to get them..The type of guy we could stash away and develop in the DL for the time being and if the moment ever arose, bang, he gets the call up. Or he makes the team as the 15th man and bides his time while giving D'Antoni an option to go with at a moments notice (supposing this player came in, worked his tail off and showed MDA a lot in practice everyday giving him no choice but to give him time). These type of guys are out there, we just need to know where to look..I think the Hornets knew where to look when they just came up with Jerrells...To me a team is 1-15..It's a long season--end of the rotation guys could turn out to be very important..I'm not interested in carrying a guy who doesn't fit or serves no function or purpose -- I'd rather have my 15th guy be a guy that could address a potential need in a pinch right now with a shot at more next year and down the road.
