I couldn't read past that. Rondo pick was traded cause Savor didn't want to pay luxury tax. Kinda the reason PHO traded a lot of their other picks.

If this Carmelo Anthony trade happens, I'm changing my prediction to 37-45, 9th in the East.

ALL COACHES have big egos. There's nothing wrong with that. I think it's all too easy to just forget that MOST of the reason teams win is due to TALENT! That's the 1st thing that needs to be established for any team to be a title contender. Great coaching can add to the win total and get a team over the hump in a critical Playoff game, but no coach wins without talent. That being said. I think Mike is the kind of coach you want if you don't have a perfect team. His system has been proven to push teams further than their talent suggests they should go. Case in point the WCF's in 2006. When you can get your team to win it's div. and get to the WCF's relying on Diaw, TT and KT as your biggest players, you have a system that gets more out of the players you have than should be expected. I believe that with the talent we have, Mike should be able to do a lot.

This team looks like a superior defensive version of the kind of teams he had in PHX. He never had this much talented size in PHX. Never had two defensive PG's either. His entire roster is filled with superior athletes that should be able to get a lot done on the defensive end. If you're looking for a big reason this team should go far I think it could be the defense.

I think you make a lot of good points. I have been very frustrated with D'Antoni but he has had success and as you said earlier he was the coach of a team that over achieved and got to the conference finals the year Amare was out. That being said, his tenure in NY has been very disappointing. I didn't like his being hired so I was biased from the start but thus far he has shown me nothing to convince me he can do the job. As a fan I want the team to do well. I hope his approach works with this group of players. Walsh acquired a ton of talent and is aware of who his coach is. If D'Antoni does the job he was hired to do the Knicks should win 45. However, if he is the coach that he has been the past two years I think the team would be lucky to win 37 games. My hope is 45 wins, peaking just before the playoffs and making a run in the playoffs past the first round.

You know what? Phil Jackson has never won without the best player in the NBA on his team. You need to be very lucky and skilled and talented as a coach to win an NBA championship. For better or worse, MDA and his teams ran up against a better Duncan team.

And MDA has won multiple championships in Europe as a player and coach. Not sure if that really translates to the NBA cause we are not really aware of the circumstances, but that does say something.

I think coaches like Mike don't do well with bad teams. He's not a rah rah type of coach that tries to coach effort and squeeze every ounce out of even mundane rosters. He's much better when you give him smart and talented players with skill rather than grunt types that may not be skilled but have the strength, athletic ability and motor to play great defense and grind out wins night after night. LB, JVG, Skiles etc. do very well with teams that grind it out. They however don't have the sophisticated X's and O's to get the most out of a guy like Nash, Amare, Marion, Hill etc.
or guys like Diaw or Bell.

We have the right kind of roster to fit what Mike is good at. Smart players with real NBA skills. Athletes that can keep up with the pace and mental speed of his system.

His philosophy has been used in the past and has never won a championship. [Coach K use D'antoni's offense to win the Gold in the Olympics.] His difficulties with communication, game planning, coaching young players and guys that might need an authority figure, and his rigidity have doomed him to not be successful unless he is blessed to have comparable talent to his rosters when he won in Phoenix. [Umm, besides Phoenix, where he was incredibly successful, where else has he been unsuccessful?] D'Antoni did speak against Marion after the Shaq trade and said that Marion did not know how good his situation was in Phoenix before he left. I think the same could be said for D'Antoni. [Is D'antoni complaining now, or has he ever complained since reaching NY? Did he complain when the Knicks dumped Crawford and Randolph even though the Knicks were playng competitive ball?] Gentry and Don Nelson have been good coaches when Nash ran their team as well. [What about Terry Porter? He had D'antoni's team and did nothing with it. Only when Gentry came in and brought the Suns back to D'antoni's offense did thehy go back to winning...] D'Antoni may never have the opportunity to have a roster that can overcome all of his short comings like the Nash led Suns did. [Not sure where you are going with this.] His ego and rigidity caused him to move to NY. [Um... he could have gone pretty much anywhere... Chicago gave him a pretty good offer, he chose NY] His flaws that were covered in Phoenix by Nash and others may very well doom him in NY. [Um, actually, Terry Porter's time in Phoenix exposed that team's flaws also. Ask any coach, D'antoni knows his business.] He needs to do some winning without Nash for the first time in his coaching career this season [While I agree, I think the dependence on Nash is highly overstated. Its easy to criticize from the sidelines, but the SSOL offense has many supporters and Coach D is credited with its primary concepts. Everything comes down to execution, but do you really think any other coach would have done much better with last year's team? You think Phil Jackson rides Al Harrington to a championship? Or George Karl coaxes Duhon to an all star level? I'm sort of offended, to the point of asking you to pull your head out of your ass. Maybe Larry Brown could make Curry stop eating, but D'antoni couldn't? Maybe pissng off Larry Hughes was a huge mistake on Coach D's part? If Coach D was a better coach, Nate wouldn't shoot at his own basket? Likely chance. He's building a team now. Walsh knows the type of players he's looking for. He doesn't have to fight with Steve Kerr over personnel decisions. He's had the Suns stacked squad, which got better when he arrived, and he's had the Knicks crappy roster, which continued to underperform. Give the guy a chance.]

It's real simple when Mike left and they brought in the defensive savior Terry Porter, the team nearly revolted and lost their minds begging for a return to Mike's system. That's why they wanted Gentry to be coach. They knew he could run it. They weren't exactly the same team, but as Gentry said it was mostly Mike's system and the Knicks said even the play calls were exactly the same.

I think Donnie and Mike are clear on how they want to do things and it should make for a much better organization from here on. Donnie did a GREAT job in making this team long and athletic, but smart too. Just listen to the guys talk and you can see that they have intelligence. Mike needs that. Dumb and lazy players think this is about jackin 3's. Smart and aggressive players realize that there are all sorts of angles and openings created by moving the ball and executing the plays. HIT THE OPEN MAN! Keep moving and keep the ball moving and you can pretty much react on instinct cuz the open shots will be there.

Still what I think will be our biggest area of success is on the defensive end. Having players that care about D and effort will be the reason this team wins more than 45 games this year and possibly 50. Teams won't be able to stop our offense, but playing even a little D will go a long way to securing wins. With a middle of the league defense Mike won 62 games. I think this team has at least that much defensive talent maybe more. PHX never had 2 good defensive PG's like we have now and they never had so many 6'10" or bigger players.

48 - 52 wins depending on 3 players 1. The Russian, 2 AR 3 the deepness of the bench. We already know what Gallo, Chandler, Felton, and Amear is bringing each night.

41 wins & we barely make the 8th seed... maybe take 1 game in round 1 & Knick fans will be doing cartwheels. PROGRESS!

Is this seriously how you feel about the team? Yeah it's possible, but I think it's highly unlikely that this team produces so little. 41 wins is a critical set of injuries and some horrible defense. If this team simply plays at their current levels they should win more than 41 games. I actually think a few guys are gonna see their production bump up. Felton for sure should see his production increase. If he's anything better than what we've seen from Duhon then there's no way they only get to 41 wins. Last year this team underachieved and ended up with only 29 wins. The roster wasn't a pimple on the behind of this current roster. 12 more wins is nothing. Last years team could've gotten that with just Duhon playing at career levels. That alone could've prevented the 1-9 start.

This year I think the strength of the team up the middle will bring stability and confidence. Felton/Amar'e settles everyone down and creates an atmosphere for success for everyone else. They take the pressure off early.

for the past 5 years running this team has consistently underachieved even my conservative expectations... i predicted 35 wins last year & you told me i was being unreasonably pessimistic... they finished with 29.

this year 41 wins is my absolute minimum acceptable outcome but i can't go any higher than that until this coach & this team shows me something to be optimistic about... i am sick of hearing about all the success MDA had in Phoenix... different team, different players... the Knicks of 2011 is nowhere near as deep a team as the one he had to coach in Phoenix... our team sucked ass under MDA the past 2 years running... why should i think they'll be better than a 41 win team other than just plain blind optimism? until MDA proves he can get this KNICKS team to win games, he hasn't proven anything in my eyes.

I don't think Jax goes to Walsh and asks to trade Harrington because he is a bad influence on the team and I do think he would get more out of him on the court and Harrington would have played smarter if he was coached. Curry didn't have a weight problem last year after Walsh made sure he was in shape, but if your suggestion is could a stronger, more disciplinarian type coach like JVG or Riley have Curry in shape I think that the there is a good chance that they could. Don't discount the fact that D'Antoni has said that he doesn't want to play a traditional big man because he slows the game down and Curry is a post up player. Curry is a needy guy and while he may not have helped the Knicks at all last year anyway, unlike Walsh, D'Antoni did nothing to help get Curry back on the court or build him up. In reality, as a coach that is part of his job. As far as Hughes is concerned, I think he spoke up as a vet who was treated wrong. He isn't the best locker room guy but that doesn't change how he was treated. If you look at free agency and how things turned out, Curry worked out with LBJ and Hughes and LBJ are supposed to be boys. I honestly don't think that had much or anything to do with LeBron's decision but those guys were not treated rigbt by D'Antoni and they do associate with LeBron. And I agree about Nate. If any expectation of professionalism was communicated in training camp, if expectations were communicated by the coach during the season, if the team was committed to professionalism on the court and there were consequences from the coach and the teammates ire because of such a commitment to winning I don't think Nate would have shot at an opponents basket. Who knows, John Starks head butted Reggie Miller in the heat of the moment. And I agree about not fighting with Steve Kerr. Walsh has defended and bailed out D'Antoni in every situation where he has struggled with a young or talented player that needed coaching, structure and limits. Hopefully this year the loosey goosey no defense come on guys be professionals and execute the pick and roll will translate into 5 million well spent. It hasn't so far.

I'm sort of offended, to the point of asking you to pull your head out of your ass.
My advice to you is to keep your head in there, your view is better than mine.

I'd say a slightly better than .500 record in the regular season (say 42, 43 wins) and a playoff berth. They definitely assembled enough talent for more though, it all depends how quickly these players can put it all together.

Excellent points.

Indeed ...it seems DW has emphasized defensive minded players who are young, long and athletic. Felton and TD are both good defensive points with excellent speed. Going to assume he did this deliberately feeling d'Antoni can foster teamwork and teach offense to the lot of them.

My Prediction...the team will play with:

1. great intensity and play their hearts out;
2. great teamwork and harmony;
3. an uptempo game along with intense defense.

MDA will use a 9 man rotation....because we have an overabundance a very good young players who deserve to play; can run the court and tire out the other team's players.

47 - 48 wins and 5th or 6th place in the East.
